Padres' A.J. Preller 'drives everyone nuts' at trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News The San Diego Padres were one of the most active teams at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. From the improvements in the lineup to the rotation getting deeper and the incredible addition of Mason Miller, it was a busy deadline for A.J. Preller. For the Padres' general manager, it was another deadline where he was one of the top buyers. But, in a piece from Mark Feinsand of from the perspective of executives around baseball, the Padres were a frustrating team to deal with. "Preller drives everyone nuts!" said an AL executive. "He basically kept multiple teams on the hook as he shopped De Vries. He was a buyer, but kind of operated like a seller in terms of auctioning off De Vries to the highest bidder." Preller sold the highest-ranked prospect at the deadline in 18-year-old shortstop Leo De Vries. With plenty of teams interested in the Padres' top prospect, who was ranked third in baseball by MLB Pipeline, Preller could act like a seller, in turn, frustrating executives. The Padres eventually dealt De Vries, along with a few other pitching prospects, to the Athletics for Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears. It was the blockbuster of the deadline, and added even more firepower to the top bullpen in baseball. Plenty hold onto their prospects, while Preller isn't afraid to move them for MLB talent. This season was no different, but as the AL executive said, the way Preller went about trading De Vries was different. Despite being a buyer, he acted as a seller with De Vries, driving the price up and demanding top-dollar for the top prospect. It worked out in the end, as the Padres landed one of baseball's best young relievers in Miller, who has one of the fastest fastballs in baseball. Getting Miller at the deadline came with a lot of frustration, mainly for other executives looking to sell. Despite it being a seller's market, they couldn't act like it, as Preller acted as a seller when it came to De Vries. Preller had a productive deadline for the Padres, but in doing so, caused frustration for executives in negotiations, even driving some "nuts" as they tried to deal for De Vries, the best prospect who was dealt at the trade deadline. The Los Angeles Chargers suffered a huge blow to the offensive line on Thursday with the injury to left tackle Rashawn Slater, who is done for the 2025 season due to a ruptured patella tendon. Slater, a two-time Pro Bowl tackle, was one of the key pieces on what was expected to be an improved offensive line in Los Angeles. Instead, the Chargers have to start the campaign down a tackle, which could have a huge impact on how we approach rookie RB Omarion Hampton in fantasy football. Yahoo analysts Justin Boone and Scott Pianowski discussed the loss of Slater and how it might affect Hampton in his rookie season on the latest episode of The Fantasy Forecast Podcast. We know head coach Jim Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman want to run the ball plenty. That sentiment should continue despite the injury to Slater. But just how effective will that run game be? And does it mean we need to be cautious drafting Hampton in late August? Boone, who had Hampton as his RB12 before this news, is going to bump the rookie back down in his rankings as a result. Can Hampton and the Chargers' run game overcome Slater's injury? Perhaps. But only time will tell. Pianowski points out the difficulty of overcoming an injury on the offensive line for the run game vs. the passing game. It's much more important to the run and Scott wonders if the Chargers might make a move to patch up the O-Line before the season. Either way, it will impact Hampton's outlook and both analysts believe bumping down the UNC product is a fair assessment. Hampton was expected to have a bigger role given the injury to RB Najee Harris, who has started training camp and preseason on the active/non-football injury list. It's unclear when Harris will get back on the practice field before the start of the regular season. With Harris' absence, Hampton has been given an opportunity to win the RB1 role. That's what has created such fantasy football hype around the rookie. Now, that hype takes a slight hit.
