Roy Keane TURNED AWAY from Cork City home ground in League of Ireland ad

Roy Keane found himself TURNED AWAY from Turner's Cross as he featured in a new League of Ireland sponsored ad.
The Republic of Ireland legend is a regular attendee at Cork City's home fixtures but found himself not allowed to enter the ground as part of the playful ad.
Keane teamed up with League of Ireland's official beer sponsor, Rockshore, where he starred in the playful ad. Turning up to the famous ground, Keane is turned away by a steward who tells him 'it's me job'.
The ex-Manchester United captain then rushes to the neighbouring Corner Flag pub where he tries to squeeze in to catch some of action where he struggles to catch a view.
Rockshore recently announced a four-year partnership with the League of Ireland and have put their money where their mouth is by recruiting Keane for the advertisement.
"Rockshore believes in the power of Irish football and the passion of its fans," says Anne Zahan, Head of Beer at Diageo Ireland. "We see a big opportunity to help further promote the League of Ireland. This campaign is about celebrating world-class Irish football right here all summer long, reminding everyone that this is a league of our own."
When he is not busy doing punditry work with Sky Sports, Keane is often spotted at Cork City games himself. Known for keeping a low profile, the Premier League winner is known to pop into the ground quietly while at home in Cork, visiting family.

Oasis gigs underpin more than 9% rise in card spending

Consumer spending surged in Ireland last weekend as the Manchester-born band Oasis played to two sold-out concerts in Dublin's Croke Park. New data from digital bank Revolut shows Oasis fans continued to spend despite soaring hotel prices and efforts by city centre businesses to cash in on the occasion, with card spending soaring by more than 9% as a result of the two Dublin gigs. Marking the first time in over 16 years since the band played in Ireland, the Oasis gig also underpinned a more than 8% rise in the volume of card transactions, with spending of this magnitude not being witnessed since Taylor Swift performed at the Aviva Stadium in June 2024. In addition, over 16% more was spent in Dublin bars, cafes, restaurants, and nightclubs over the weekend compared to the previous one. Anticipation had been building across the capital throughout August, Revolut said, with a pop-up store on St Stephen's Green setting the tone since opening in early August, as fans scrambled for sought-after Oasis merch. Over the last two weekends, merchandise stores in Dublin recorded hundreds of thousands of euros in revenue, which is likely due to the store's lengthy queues. Owing to popular demand, the pop-up store has since announced extended dates. While spending on public transportation was down 9% across the rest of Ireland, it rose dramatically by over 120% in Dublin as Irish Oasis fans descended upon the capital for the gigs. Taxi drivers also benefited from the concerts, with a 15% uplift in revenues last weekend. Dublin sales of store-bought beer, wine, and liquor also rose by over a third compared to the previous weekend. Furthermore, Dublin restaurants, pubs, and licensed stores also saw a boost in sales across the weekend, with Revolut's business customers recording an increase in revenues. Of these, the 'food, beverages or tobacco' industries experienced a notable 2% uplift when compared with the previous weekend. 'Consumer spending of this level in just one weekend sends a very strong signal about the confidence of our more than 3m customers in Ireland," said General Manager at Revolut Bank UAB - Ireland Branch, Malcolm Craig. "Last weekend highlights the value of attracting genuine A-listers to Ireland and that Revolut remains Irish people's preferred way to spend.'

Athletics Wicklow legend taken by surprise on his 80th birthday

The good and the great from Athletics Ireland and Athletics Leinster, Irish Universities Athletics Association and of course, Athletics Wicklow affiliated clubs, all attended in great numbers to celebrate this milestone birthday for Cyril. 'It's not very often that this gentleman is taken by surprise, but on Thursday evening, July 31, Cyril Smyth was caught off guard at his 80th birthday celebrations in the Grove Inn,' Athletics Lenister posted on their social channels after the party. 'Friends and colleagues from Athletics Ireland and Athletics Leinster also gathered to pay tribute to Cyril's lifelong dedication to the sport. The turnout reflected the enormous respect and affection in which Cyril is held – not just for years, but for decades of unwavering service to athletics,' it said. The event was organised by Wicklow Athletics County Board and Bray Runners AC, Cyril's own club, to mark this special milestone. On behalf of Athletics Wicklow clubs, chairperson Billy Porter presented Cyril with a specially commissioned painting from local artist Lynda Bremner, while Bray Runners AC chairperson, Richard Hourihan, presented Cyril with a beautiful portrait by Debbie Donohoe. An Ireland polo shirt on behalf of Athletics Ireland was also presented to Cyril by Brid Golden, Athletics Ireland president. To complete the evening, Bray Runners AC rolled out a themed cake in the colours of Cyril's club, Bray Runners AC. Cyril has been involved with Bray Runners since 1984, when he serendipitously met with a club member while running the Cliff Walk from Bray to Greystones – which has now been closed for nearly five years. Originally from Dunoon, near Clyde in Scotland, he began his athletics involvement as a starter official at county championships in 1990. He was a member of staff at Trinity College Dublin when he got involved with assisting at athletic events in College Park, in the 1980s. In a separate tribute, Bray Runners wrote: 'A long-time devoted member of Bray Runners, Cyril is a familiar and highly respected face at the start line of so many races and has devoted many many years to Irish athletics. 'His professionalism as a race starter and passion for the sport sets a wonderful example for all of us.'
