2 teachers suspended after kids recite Fatiha at school assembly
Guwahati: Two teachers in lower Assam's Bongaigaon district were suspended after it was found that students at their govt school were reciting the Fatiha (first chapter of the Quran) every day during the morning assembly. The video that created controversy went viral on Friday, when Independence Day was being celebrated. The headteacher of the school, Jeherul Islam, and the CRCC (cluster resource centre coordinator) for the school, Nirmal Kumar Choudhury, have been suspended, officials said on Sunday. As per the govt-recommended list, no religious verse can be chanted in the state's govt schools during assembly, officials said. According to initial reports, the students of the No. 619 Pacchim Bhadragaon Lower Primary School recited Surah Fatiha instead of the national anthem on Independence Day. However, district authorities and education department conducted a verification at the school campus, and it was revealed that the incident took place on Aug 8. "It was only on Aug 15 that a teacher, who was transferred from that school recently, circulated the video showing school children reciting the Fatiha. Reciting any such religious verse is not allowed at govt schools. That is why two teachers were suspended on Saturday," Bongaigaon district elementary education officer Pallabi Medhi said. The school is located in a Muslim-majority area in Bongaigaon, and most of the students are from the minority community. Sources said although Choudhury was not directly involved in the incident, the headteacher was blamed by educational department officials for the misconduct. "Fatiha was being recited by the students for a long time in the middle of the morning assembly," an education department official said. The teacher admitted to sharing the video without considering the repercussions. "She recorded the video before she was transferred, but it went viral after she was released," the official said. UP woman accuses elder brother and Muslim ‘wife' of pressuring her to convert to Islam
The police in Prayagraj on Saturday arrested a Muslim woman on charges of pressuring a young woman to convert to Islam and attempting to force her into marriage with an elderly Muslim man from Kolkata. In her complaint, the young woman has named her elder brother as an accomplice of the Muslim woman. Ritika Kushwaha, 21, alleged that the arrested accused, Rubiya—a mother of two—was brought to their home by her elder brother Rahul Kushwaha, who has a criminal background and had recently been released after serving five years in prison. Rubiya was allegedly staying in the house as Rahul's wife. The police said they would investigate if there was any 'nexus' involved in the case. According to the police, the complainant alleged that a few days after his release from jail last year, her brother Rahul brought home a woman named Rubiya, whose husband is currently lodged in prison. Ritika alleged in her complaint that after Rubiya began living there, the atmosphere in their house changed and that Rahul imposed restrictions, including on offering prayers to Hindu deities at home. She further alleged that Rahul and Rubiya started subjecting her to mental and physical pressure to adopt Islam and that when she resisted, they threatened to kill her. Ritika also claimed that the duo were forcing her to marry an elderly man from Kolkata and suspected that their actual intention was to sell her. Based on Ritika's complaint, the police in Prayagraj registered an FIR against Rahul and Rubiya under the anti-conversion law as well as Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 298 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 351 (criminal intimidation).
