Ravichandran Ashwin receives clean chit in ball-tampering charges in TNPL
Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering allegations made during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match involving his team, Dindigul Dragons, and the Siechem Madurai Panthers. The charges stemmed from Madurai's accusation that foreign substances were used to alter the condition of the ball during their clash in Salem on June 14. However, after a comprehensive internal review, TNPL officials confirmed that there was no breach of rules or evidence of malpractice. Ashwin, who captains defending champions Dindigul Dragons, played a key role in his side's dominant victory in that match, partnering Shivam Singh in a successful chase.
Madurai Panthers raise concerns over ball condition
The controversy began when the Siechem Madurai Panthers submitted a formal complaint, claiming the ball had deteriorated unusually during their innings. Coach Shijit Chandran alleged that the Dindigul players may have used chemically treated towels to tamper with the ball. He noted that the batters experienced difficulty after the powerplay, describing the sound at contact as similar to hitting "a stone instead of a cricket ball". The complaint was initially directed to the Madurai franchise's CEO before reaching TNPL authorities.
TNPL officials find no wrongdoing
Responding to the complaint, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan dismissed the accusations after reviewing match-day reports. He clarified that the towels in question were standard issue from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and available to both teams. According to him, match officials, including the umpires and referee, monitored the ball consistently and had raised no concerns during play. He described the complaint as speculative and lacking any verifiable proof.
Kannan also offered Madurai the option to escalate the matter, requesting them to provide concrete video, photographic or testimonial evidence by June 17 if they sought an independent investigation.
Ashwin-led Dindigul stays focused amid noise
Despite the off-field drama, Ashwin's Dindigul Dragons continued their strong title defence. The side chased down a target of 151 in under 13 overs, thanks to an explosive start from openers Ashwin and Shivam Singh. With back-to-back wins under their belt, the Dragons look well on course for another deep TNPL campaign.

Andhra Woman Tied To Tree, Humiliated By Villagers Over Loan Dispute
Narayanapuram (Andhra Pradesh): A woman was allegedly tied to a tree and publicly humiliated by villagers in Narayanapuram of Chittoor district, following a dispute over unpaid loans, said police on Monday. Sirisha (29), wife of Thimmarayappa had returned from Bengaluru on Monday to collect her children's Transfer Certificates (TC) from their school when locals confronted her about the money borrowed by her husband. Sirisha was allegedly tied to a tree by the locals and was asked to call her husband to repay the money and her daughter hit a local which escalated the situation, Kuppam DSP B Parthasarathi told PTI. According to police, the couple owed around Rs 80,000 to a villager named Munikannappa and also some unspecified amount to local organisations. A case was registered under BNS sections 115, 126, and 112 read with section 3 and police took five people into custody over the incident. Sirisha told the police that her husband allegedly abandoned her six months ago in Bengaluru although investigators suspect that they may still be in touch regarding financial matters. Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who represents the Kuppam assembly constituency, condemned the atrocity and ordered strict action against the culprits. Naidu took details from the district Superintendent of Police and directed officials to provide full support to the victim's family. "Strict action be taken against those involved in the inhuman treatment of a woman in Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal," said Naidu in an official release, adding that the woman was allegedly tied to a tree and humiliated because her husband, Thimmarayappa, failed to repay loans he had taken from the villagers. Naidu instructed police to organise legal awareness drives in rural villages and said the public must rely on the law and refrain from vigilante justice. He also stressed the need for basic legal education in every village. The CM reiterated that his government 'would not allow such incidents' to take place and urged the police to take firm preventive measures in all regions. Meanwhile, YSRCP MLC and Kuppam in-charge KRJ Bharat condemned the incident, calling it a "shameful act". Such cruelty in Kuppam exposes the lawlessness under the TDP-led government, he said. Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y S Sharmila Reddy termed it an "inhuman and shameful act". Sharmila said it was a disgrace that such an incident happened in front of the victim's children. "As a woman, I strongly condemn this cruel incident," said Sharmila in a press release, adding that this incident proved that even in the CM's constituency, "women are not safe". She criticised the NDA coalition government, saying attacks on women are a blot on it, and tall claims about protecting Telugu women are no longer credible. She demanded that the government take responsibility, ensure justice, provide support to Sirisha's family, and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. Meanwhile, Minister Anitha and TDP MLC K Srikanth condemned the assault on Sirisha. Bengaluru stampede: BJP demands resignation, Siddaramaiah responds
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has demanded his resignation along with those of Deputy CM D K Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara, following the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead. 'Regarding the tragic stampede incident near Chinnaswamy Stadium, I request the BJP leaders in the state to first release a list of BJP leaders who resigned during similar incidents in the past before demanding our resignation,' Siddaramaiah said during a media briefing. BJP holds protest at Freedom Park BJP leaders held a protest at Bengaluru's Freedom Park demanding accountability for the incident, which occurred during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title. 'RCB won the match and people were enjoying it. But what did the government have to do with it? They called people to celebrate… Vidhana Soudha is not a playground,' said BJP MLC Chalavadi Narayanaswamy to ANI. 'To take credit, this government messed up and 11 people died. Yet, it refuses to accept its mistake.' Calling the accident "unfortunate", Siddaramaiah emphasised that the Congress-led state government has taken full accountability. 'As a responsible government, we have taken accountability for the incident,' he said. My political secretary has also been relieved of his duties.' High-level judicial probe ordered Siddaramaiah also confirmed that a judicial investigation will be conducted by retired High Court Justice John Michael Cunha. 'We have constituted a one-member commission led by retired Justice Cunha to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,' he said. Stampede details The stampede occurred on June 4, outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, during a felicitation ceremony for RCB players organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The event saw a massive turnout, with several state leaders including CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM Shivakumar in attendance. The chaotic crowd surge resulted in 11 fatalities and 56 injuries. In response to the tragedy, the Karnataka government announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹25 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
