T-Mobile boss makes grandiose 6G predictions, but is Europe even included?
Not everybody out there has enjoyed the full capabilities of 5G yet and now T-Mobile is making bold predictions – even promises – about the future and what it'll bring in the face of 6G, the next connectivity standard.
Just the other day, Ulf Ewaldsson, the chief technology officer of T-Mobile , made a huge Starlink announcement (while celebrating another 5G win over AT&T and Verizon) that we told you about. Ulf has a thing or two to say about 6G, and it's not some distant future we're talking about here; no – the discussed timeframe is 2030!

His vision reflects growing US ambition in the race toward 6G, one that seems increasingly divorced from the more restrained stance taken by European operators.China Mobile's executive vice president, Li Huidi, also highlighted cutting-edge features like integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), which would allow networks to detect and interpret their physical surroundings. To lay the groundwork, China Mobile is rapidly deploying 5G-Advanced, with around 50,000 sites already capable of delivering peak speeds of 4.2 Gbit/s. I personally find that 5G is great for what I do on a day-to-day basis, but I can't deny these are some impressive numbers.Many of the Old Continent's telecom leaders are still grappling with the costs and complexities of 5G and are reluctant to embrace another disruptive hardware overhaul. Groups representing largely European interests argue that 6G should not be a new generation at all, but rather an evolution of 5G. Their focus remains firmly on AI-driven automation and network efficiency, not radical reinvention.This divergence reflects deeper structural issues. Europe's telecom market is fragmented and hyper-competitive, often with four or more operators battling in small national markets. I can personally confirm that – even countries with a total population of 7 million have multiple telcos to choose from.

Yup, nobody is mentioning 6G at the moment.In contrast, China and the US benefit from stronger state backing and healthier industry margins. The result is a growing fear that Europe will fall even further behind in the next mobile revolution.Complicating matters further is the issue of global standards. The 3GPP, the organization responsible for developing mobile technology standards, has so far avoided splintering. But if regions like China pursue aggressive 6G features while Europe insists on minimal changes, such unity could fracture. Industry veterans warn that fragmentation would damage the sector worldwide.
For now, American companies like T-Mobile are seizing the spotlight with bold predictions. But unless European operators and regulators can align on both ambition and investment, the continent risks being sidelined. As China and the US race forward, Europe seems increasingly content to watch from the platform while the 6G bullet train speeds past. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, Fold 7, and tri-fold availability leaked
Samsung is going to unveil its new Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 foldable smartphones next month, alongside a possible Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Samsung will be holding a Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City on July 9, where these phones will be shown off. The Flip 7 FE, though not directly named in the leak, will most likely also become available in August after being announced in July. Samsung has promised its most advanced foldable yet, and from leaks we can see that the Fold 7 makes the Fold 6 look ancient. Samsung's tri-fold will directly challenge the Huawei Mate XT. | Video credit — Huawei The tri-fold, which will see a very limited release in a select few markets, will also be unveiled in July, alongside the Flip 7 and Fold 7 . However, though there isn't a confirmed date just yet, the report estimates that this phone will become available in tracks with Samsung's plans to launch it this year shortly after its other foldables, before moving on to a wider launch around the globe if it sells well. The G Fold will only see around 200,000 units manufactured for now, as Samsung has very subdued sales expectations due to the cost. According to the multiple reports we've seen till now, the Fold 7 is shaping up to be a massive leap over its predecessor. The only aspect I can complain about is the battery, which is expected to be the same 4,400 mAh as the Fold 6. It will also only charge at 25W when wired, another somewhat disappointing remnant that desperately needs an upgrade. However, seeing rival offerings like the Oppo Find N5 and the Honor Magic V5, I think it's about time Samsung caught up. Coupled with the long-term software support ( seven years ) and people's preference for One UI, Samsung could be looking at a winner here. The Fold 7 may even reverse the foldable industry's decline, though that may just be wishful thinking. If you were looking for the most advanced foldable on the market, you'd probably still do well with the aforementioned Find N5 and Magic V5. Galaxy Z Fold 7 competitor confirms camera boost right before the big launch
There is a new foldable coming from Honor and it is landing just days before Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. This one is shaping up to be a serious contender and now we are getting a clearer look at what kind of camera system it is bringing to the table. Honor is teasing the upcoming Honor Magic V5, which will reclaim the title of world's thinnest foldable phone – a title, previously held by the Magic V3 and currently by the Oppo Find N5. But let's not focus on thinness this time around (even though, let's be real, thin is in and everyone's fighting hard for those last few millimeters). What is more exciting is that Honor has confirmed the Magic V5 will feature a 64 MP periscope telephoto camera, clearing up earlier rumors that wavered between a 50 MP or 64 MP sensor. This camera will include OIS and even support telephoto macro photography, which could make it one of the more versatile shooters among foldables. That means you can look forward to clearer and more stable zoomed-in photos. Plus, with telephoto macro support, you'll be able to take detailed close-up pictures that show all the little things – perfect for capturing fine details up close. Meanwhile, the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, launching July 9, is expected to offer a different flavor with a 200 MP main, 10 MP telephoto and 12 MP ultra-wide. Which one will deliver the best results? That is still up in the air, but once we get our hands on these phones, we'll be able to tell for sure. Under the hood, the Magic V5 is expected to run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite, the same chip expected in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and a step up from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powering vivo's foldable. So overall, they are all playing in the same high-end space when it comes to performance, features and even design (at least on paper), which makes choosing between them that much harder. But let's be honest – in the US, the decision might already be made for you. As good as the Honor Magic V5 and vivo X Fold 5 might be in some areas, Samsung is still the only one making its foldables available stateside. Has it begun? AT&T to slash multiple jobs in less than three months in Alabama
Last week, we talked about the possibility of AI costing more than 40,000 employees of a British telco their jobs in the years to come – and now, AT&T layoffs are about to happen in Alabama. Deep AI integration within the day-to-day operations of telecommunication providers is not a sci-fi dream: that's the reality we're living in right now. So far, it's not officially said that the jobs slashed in Alabama are because of AI, but I personally wouldn't be shocked if such is the case. As reported by The Montgomery Advertiser, AT&T is about to lay off over 70 employees who are based in the city of Huntsville, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce. About a week ago, AT&T filed a WARN notice and the document said the layoffs will come into effect on September 20 – give or take, by the time the new iPhone 17 steps out in the WARN Act (short for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) is a US labor law that requires certain employers to provide advance notice before significant layoffs or business closures. Specifically, companies with 100 or more full-time employees must give at least 60 days' written notice before carrying out mass layoffs or shutting down facilities affecting 50 or more purpose of the law is to give employees time to prepare for job loss, seek new employment, or pursue retraining opportunities, and that's only natural. – AT&T spokesperson for The Montgomery Advertiser, June 2025 This certainly doesn't sound too reassuring; such "times like this" when "additional reductions are necessary" might very well come again, and not too far ahead in the telco I mentioned at the beginning of the article is BT Group, one of the UK's largest telecom companies. According to reports, BT is considering deeper workforce cuts as AI becomes more central to its operations. The company currently employs nearly 99,000 people but plans to reduce that number by at least 40,000 by 2030, with the possibility of even steeper reductions. CEO Allison Kirkby believes AI could significantly improve efficiency and accelerate these cuts beyond initial projections.
