State may set up pigeon feeding centres in SGNP
On Monday, the Supreme Court, refusing to intervene with the Bombay High Court's order, directed the Mumbai civic body to lodge FIRs against persons feeding pigeons illegally and to shut down the Kabutarkhana at Dadar.
Reacting to the SC order, Fadnavis said the government will follow the apex court's directives. 'However, there are emotions attached to the issue, and we will consider setting up feeding areas for pigeons in deserted areas like SGNP. It will be in accordance with the forest laws,' he said.
On the other hand, the remarks of a Jain monk, Muni Nileshchandra Vijay, invoked reactions from the opposition. On Sunday, Jain monk Muni Nileshchandra Vijay said that the community will follow the path of satyagraha and hunger strike from August 13 if the ban continues. 'The Jain community is peaceful but, if needed, we will take up arms for our religion. If any decision goes against our faith, we will not accept even the court's order,' he said.
Kishori Pednekar, former Mumbai mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, asked him if pigeons were the private property of the Jain community. 'Though they call themselves Muni, the Jain monks have no social maturity since they are younger and keep issuing such statements. The courts have banned Kabutarkhana after it was scientifically proven that the pigeons are hazardous for human health, ' she said.
Jain community leader and state skill development minister Mangalprabhat Lodha distanced himself from the remarks by the monk. 'I disagree with his statement. I have spoken twice on this matter, and I am doing my role. I will not comment further,' he said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday (August 16, 2025) signalled a major shift in Mumbai's civic politics, claiming that the BJP-led Mahayuti has exposed years of corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Speaking at Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai and Thane, Mr. Fadnavis said that the ruling alliance had broken the 'pot of sins' that protected those who plundered the civic body and was now focused on unlocking development for the city. Speaking to reporters, he said, 'Change is certain in the BMC. We have smashed the pot of sins of those who looted the corporation and now we have opened the pot of development for the people of Maharashtra. The butter from this pot will now reach the people.' In a pointed attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, the CM remarked, 'After so many years of looting, people of Maharashtra now know very well who was eating the butter from the Mumbai municipal corporation. I do not need to add more words.' His comments came a day after Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena would contest upcoming civic elections together. The undivided Shiv Sena had controlled the cash-rich BMC for 25 straight years until 2022. The Dahi Handi festival, celebrated across Maharashtra to mark Lord Krishna's birth, saw enthusiastic participation despite rains with govindas (participants) forming human pyramid to break the handi (pot). Folk music and dance like Lavani were organised across the State to mark the festivities like every year. In Dadar, a group of women also broke the pot and won a trophy. 'The govindas' spirit has not been dampened. We want everyone to celebrate the festivities with safety,' Mr. Fadnavis said. In Ghatkopar, BJP MLA Ram Kadam dedicated a dahi handi to the security personnel who took part in Operation Sindoor, India's retaliatory strike in Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Just as our security forces broke Pakistan's handi of sins, we have dedicated the celebration to honour the bravery of our jawans who fought in the battle ground,' Mr. Fadnavis added. The Mahayuti government had recognised Dahi Handi as an adventure sport in 2022 and introduced insurance cover for the participants. Later in the day, addressing the govindas at the Tembi Naka Mitra Mandal event in Thane, Mr. Fadnavis praised Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and called him a 'true Shiv Sainik of Balasaheb Thackeray' who is carrying forward the legacy of late Sena leader Anand Dighe.

Environmental activists serve legal action over celebrations inside SGNP
MUMBAI: A day after writing letters and expressing concerns over the festivities taking place inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), environmental activists on Saturday sent a legal notice to the forest authorities. In July, a Kanwar Yatra took place inside the forest, said Rohit Joshi, founder of the Yeoor Environment Society. 'Then again, another religious event took place in August. Soon, the political parties began demanding that the park remain open for idol immersion,' he said. The notice stated that religious festivities, ceremonies, and social gatherings within the SGNP are prohibited by the Bombay High Court to prevent ecological disturbance to wildlife. In an order passed in 2022, the court directed the forest department to prevent any non-forest activities within the national park, which includes idol immersions and processions. It also directed them to take all necessary actions to safeguard the ecology, as SGNP is a protected forest under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. 'The loudspeakers and other activities will harm the wildlife. People dipping into the water or immersing idols in it can threaten the crocodiles, reptiles, and other animals in the water bodies,' said Stalin, director of Vanashakti. 'Even commoners and trekkers are prohibited from going on the Dahisar riverside, but religious people are allowed to bathe in the river as part of their rituals. There should be a uniform law in the park.' Stalin activist demanded the prohibition of these activities and for forest range officers to be deployed to ensure compliance with the high court order. The activists also demand the issuance of a public notice stating that non-forest activities are prohibited in the park. Police should be deployed to ensure enforcement of the laws, Joshi added. 'Failing to do so, a contempt of court petition will be filed.' SGNP director Anita Patil was unavailable for a comment.

‘BMC set for parivartan, BJP to replace those who looted people,' says Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at Mumbai Dahi Handi event
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday said that 'parivartan' (change) was inevitable in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. After symbolically breaking the clay pot at the Jambori Maidan Dahi Handi festival in Worli, Fadnavis stated, 'In the coming BMC polls, we will bring the change by replacing those who failed and looted the people.' Exuding confidence that the BJP-led Mahayuti will be able to defeat the combined forces of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, the chief minister said, 'We are confident that the people will judge us on the development agenda. We are committed to serving the people.' 'The results are before the people… the number of mega projects which we have taken up across the city, namely coastal road, MTHL, Navi Mumbai Airport, BDD chawl housing, metro railways, etc…' he added. The BMC has been under the Shiv Sena (UBT) for the last three decades. In 2017, the undivided Shiv Sena and the BJP contested separately despite being alliance partners in the state government. The BJP won 82 seats, just two seats less than the Shiv Sena's tally of 84. However, with a strained relationship between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the BJP, the next BMC polls are expected to be a fiercely contested event. At Ghatkopar, where BJP (MLA) Ram Kadam hosted the Dahi Handi event, Fadnavis lauded the theme. The chief minister said, 'This Dahi Handi at Ghatkopar is dedicated to our Armed Forces. It's a salute to their courage and success. The Indian forces gave Pakistan a befitting reply by entering their territory and destroying their terror camps.' 'Operation Sindoor under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a historic achievement which has been rightly chosen as the theme of this Dahi Handi. It is a tribute to all those who fought bravely and made India proud,' he added. The Dahi Handi is an annual celebration associated with Krishna Janmashtami. The Dahi Handi festival is organised by groups/ communities in their respective areas a day after Janmashtami. Young boys and girls form human pyramids to reach clay pots filled with milk, yogurt, and butter suspended from a height. The team that first breaks the pot is declared the winner. State BJP president Ravindra Chavan said, 'Dahi handi is a festival which brings people together for celebrations across communities, class, and parties.' According to the schedule released by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Fadnavis will visit 14 Dahi Handi events across Mumbai and Thane on Saturday. It includes Worli, Bhoiwada, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Raghunathnagar (Thane), Tembhinaka (Thane), Bhiwandi, Dahisar, and Birivali. Of these 14, at least four Dahi Handis are organised in Thane by Shiv Sena leaders.
