TSA launches eGates to speed up airport security checkpoint lines
Airport security checkpoint lines can sometimes feel like a major hold-up, but the launch of new electronic gates may help travelers get through them faster. Called eGates, these new security checkpoint features automatically compare someone's biometrics against their identification document and boarding pass instead of by a Transportation Security Administration officer at the podium, according to a news release by the agency on Aug. 19. The new pilot program is meant to streamline the airport security screening process, including "enhancing efficiency and security," the release continued. Under the new modernization program, travelers will scan their boarding pass and walk up to the eGate, which scans their face. Once cleared, they go directly to the bag screening. "eGates accomplish several objectives toward achieving Secretary Noem's goal to enhance TSA security and hospitality," said TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl in a statement. "This includes creating a seamless, less invasive traveler experience and shorter wait times at TSA security checkpoints." 83768993007 The eGates are currently being piloted in partnership with CLEAR – a privately run program that already uses biometrics to expedite travelers' security screening – and is only available to CLEAR+ members at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), where it launched earlier this month. TSA has complete operational control over the eGates, with CLEAR only transmitting limited data, like a live photo and boarding pass, the company said in a news release. "CLEAR is investing in this technology at no cost to taxpayers to modernize our checkpoints and ensure America's airports are ready to meet global expectations," said CLEAR CEO Caryn Seidman Becker in a statement. "CLEAR's secure identity platform will help unlock a better, safer, and more frictionless experience for all travelers." The eGates will roll out at Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) this month with a slated nationwide implementation before the influx of travel for the FIFA World Cup 2026 games, according to CLEAR. Two national parks just reopened after devastating wildfires. Here's what travelers will find
Partial reopenings, burned landscapes, a story of revamp and renewal. The call of the canyon is echoing once again: After weeks of closure due to wildfire impacts, two of America's most dramatic landscapes are rolling out the welcome mat — well, part of the welcome mat — for adventurous travelers ready to witness nature's resilience firsthand. Grand Canyon National Park and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park are reopening, though plenty of caveats and restrictions are still in order. Here are the details. Grand Canyon's South Rim is back open — somewhat The Grand Canyon's legendary South Rim corridor trails have reopened their gates, offering visitors a chance to descend into one of the world's most spectacular geological wonders, post-wildfire. The South Kaibab Trail now welcomes hikers from the trailhead down to Tipoff, while the beloved Bright Angel Trail is accessible from the trailhead to Pipe Creek Resthouse. For those seeking a connecting route, the Tonto Trail between Tipoff and Havasupai Gardens is ready for exploration. What makes this reopening particularly special is the enhanced safety infrastructure now in place. New air quality monitoring stations at key locations provide real-time data, ensuring visitors can make informed decisions about their canyon adventures. The crystalline air quality that has returned to the inner canyon offers stunning visibility for photography and wildlife spotting. However, seasoned canyon explorers should note that some areas remain off-limits. The North Kaibab Trail remains closed for the foreseeable future; the River Trail segment and Silver Bridge will stay closed through late November, and overnight accommodations at Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground are tentatively scheduled to return on November 1st. These delayed openings are part of comprehensive safety upgrades, including new flood detection systems designed to protect visitors in the post-fire landscape. Black Canyon of the Gunnison's partial reopening Meanwhile, Colorado's Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has emerged from its fire closure with a remarkable story of natural recovery. The South Rim is once again accessible, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness the fascinating mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation that creates an entirely new perspective on this already dramatic landscape. The park's visitor center and store have resumed normal operations, welcoming guests daily from 8 AM to 5 PM. Two of the park's most popular viewpoints — Tomichi and Gunnison Points — provide breathtaking vistas of the dark-walled canyon carved by the Gunnison River. The quarter-mile Rim Rock Trail offers an easy introduction to the park's renewed beauty. What's particularly intriguing for visitors is the chance to observe nature's recovery process in real time. The contrast between fire-affected and untouched areas creates a living laboratory of ecological regeneration that few travelers ever get to witness so dramatically. Note: East Portal Campground and the East Portal Road, South Rim Drive beyond the visitor center, South Rim Campground, and all trails and wilderness routes accessed from the South Rim and East Portal remain closed. South Rim Drive will reopen in stages as work is completed. Planning your visit Both parks are operating with modified schedules and limited access areas, making advance planning essential. Grand Canyon visitors should check current trail conditions and air quality data before heading out, while Black Canyon guests should be prepared for earlier gate closures at 6 PM daily. The silver lining of these recent challenges is that both parks now offer something truly unique: the chance to see these iconic landscapes through the lens of resilience and renewal. For travelers who appreciate witnessing nature's remarkable ability to recover and adapt, there's never been a more compelling time to visit these western treasures.

This Boutique Hotel in New York's Hamptons Is the Perfect End-of-Summer Escape
For elegant, coastal getaways in New York's summer and shoulder seasons, East Hampton is always a good idea. The Maidstone—an 1840s tannery and lodge turned boutique inn on Main Street—is now adding a dash of Italian la dolce vita to the haute hamlet, thanks to new owners LDV Hospitality. Operating year-round, LDV at The Maidstone is the first hotel project from the brand behind Scarpetta, one of NYC's lauded Italian restaurants. The Maidstone's familiar whitewashed, shutter-lined aesthetic remains. Once through the charming veranda, 19 refreshed rooms and cottages, pop-up activation spaces, and a hot-ticket Italian restaurant led by Scarpetta's own chef Jorge Espinoza exude hushed seaside glamour. Bikes are available for guests. A rope swing and chairs set up on the front porch. Glen Allsop/LDV at The Maidstone Rooms and suites within the main house come in a neutral palette, each with their own individual flair. One might find chairs and bed throws in muted peach and emerald tones, while rotary phones and analog clocks atop rattan nightstands add a dash of nostalgia. For a more residential feel, standalone cottages are available in the back garden, where guests enjoy outdoor seating and added privacy, a great pick for families. All rooms come with Frette bed linens and robes, green-piped pajamas from Italian outfitter Schostal, Santa Maria Novella bath amenities, assorted beach gear—East Hampton Beach is a five-minute ride by bike, also provided for guests—and daily continental breakfast. The lobby and reception. Enjoy an aperitivo while sitting al fresco. Glen Allsop/LDV at The Maidstone The lobby's restaurant and bar is an all-day affair. Inside, a sleek marble bar hosts daily aperitivo from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. Coastal Italian picks like crabmeat- and chili-topped linguine nero , white truffle pinsa, and yellowtail crudo adorn the main dining room's crisp white-clothed tables (pro-tip: ask for seating next to the fireplace during colder days). A spacious, elegant back garden hosts diners underneath strands of twinkling lights. Enjoy costal Italian cuisine at the hotel restaurant. Exterior of the on property retail shop. For 2025, visitors can expect some exciting pop-up experiences: vibrant lifestyle sketches by Soho-based art studio Salon 21 are on display (and for-sale) in the hotel's gallery space, and historic Florentine brand Ginori 1735 takes over the lobby 'table store' with an exclusive collection of fine porcelain tableware.
