11 Famous Roles That Were Recast ASAP Because The Original Star Was Fired, Quit, And Just Couldn't Do It Anymore

Buzz Feed25-02-2025

It might be hard to fathom, but some major roles in your most beloved movies and TV shows weren't always in the hands of the actors who made them famous. For a thousand different reasons, actors can find themselves taking over (and successfully making their own) a role initially attached to a different performer. So here are just 11 memorable times that come to mind:
1. Charlotte Le Bon: Chloe in The White Lotus
In Season 3 of The White Lotus, Charlotte Le Bon stars as Greg (Jon Gries)'s girlfriend Chloe. She's an ex-model from Quebec. The role was initially set for Francesca Corney. No official reason was made for the recasting, though Deadline reported producers wanted an actor "who played older."
2. Julian Kostov: An unnamed (for now) Russian character in The White Lotus
Though we haven't seen him pop up yet on The White Lotus, Julian Kostov is set to play a character only described so far as Russian. Miloš Biković was tapped initially for the character. However, Deadline reported the actor exited the series following "criticism from Ukraine" over his casting.
3. Vanessa Williams: Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty
As America Ferrera revealed on her Ugly Betty co-stars Michael Urie and Becki Newton's new rewatch podcast Still Ugly, Vanessa Williams was a last-minute replacement. She was brought in after another actor had completed two table reads but had been let go when filming began. In fact, Vanessa joined after they started shooting. The actor who previously played Wilhelmina wasn't named.
4. Jodie Foster: Meg Altman in Panic Room
In Panic Room, Jodie Foster played a mom who hid herself and her daughter in their home's safe room. Nicole Kidman was cast but dropped out after a previous injury prevented her from filming intense action scenes. Nicole thanked Jodie in a 2024 Hollywood Reporter interview for taking over the role. "I was in a really bad way. I was like, 'I'm having a breakdown.' And Jodie took over, thank the Lord," Nicole said.
The Tell Me Lies star is set to play Amanda Knox in an upcoming limited series at Hulu. She's replacing Margaret Qualley, who left the show last year due to scheduling conflicts.
6. Ben Whishaw: Paddington in Paddington
It might be hard to think of anyone voicing the marmalade-loving Paddington beside Ben Whishaw. For a moment, though, the role was Colin Firth's for the taking. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the casting change occurred because they needed a "slightly more open, and younger, voice" for the talking bear.
7. Mark-Paul Gosselaar: Paul Johnson in Mixed-ish
Mark-Paul Gosselaar starred as Bow Johnson's father in this prequel to Black-ish. Anders Holm originally played the role in the pilot, but Mark-Paul took over the role when the series received an entire Season 1 order. No reason was given for the recasting, though it's not unheard of for actors to be replaced after the pilot episode.
8. Vanessa Kirby: Empress Josephine in Napoleon
Vanessa Kirby played Napoleon Bonaparte's first wife, Empress Josephine, in the 2023 biopic that starred Joaquin Phoenix as the French empower. Initially, the role went to Jodie Comer, who left the movie due to scheduling conflicts with her play Prime Facie. "I'm so happy for her and I wish her all the success with that movie," Jodie told the Hollywood Reporter. "A lot of this industry is sliding doors, and I do feel like I was always supposed to do that play. So I was happy with my decision."
9. Ana de Armas: Sadie Rhodes in Ghosted
Ana de Armas starred alongside Chris Evans in the 2023 action rom-com Ghosted. Before she joined, Scarlett Johansson was initially set for the role, though no reason was given for her departure.
10. Salma Hayek: Maxandra Mendoza in Magic Mike's Last Dance
Salma Hayek joined Channing Tatum's final ride with Magic Mike in the 2023 film Magic Mike's Last Dance. She did so in a role set for Thandiwe Newton. No reason was given for Thandiwe's departure from playing a socialite with her eye on Mike.
11. Finally, Giancarlo Esposito: A.B. Wynter in The Residence
Giancarlo Esposito stars alongside Uzo Aduba in Shonda Rhimes's new series The Residence. The show is a whodunnit set in the White House during a state dinner, and Andre Braugher was initially cast in the role of the White House chief usher. Following Andre's death in 2023, Giancarlo replaced him in the role.

Deadline's Sound & Screen At SXSW London Saw Honor For Oscar Winner Anne Dudley And Music From ‘Chad Powers', ‘Shrinking' & More

Deadline's Sound & Screen event made its London debut during SXSW London on Saturday, honoring Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley and featuring live performances from hit screen projects, including Shrinking and Arcane. On a rainy summer's day in London, Deadline provided a ray of musical sunshine for a packed audience at the historic Shoreditch Church. Dudley, who won an Academy prize for her work on The Full Monty, took to the stage to perform a medley of her work, including Poldark and Jeeves and Wooster. More from Deadline 'Cielo' Producers Talk Opportunities & Challenges Of Shooting In Bolivia: "It's Such An Extraordinary And Diverse Landscape" Tony Awards 2025: The Musical Performances Deadline's Tony Awards Live Blog She was awarded Sound & Screen's inaugural Impact Award, with Baz Bamigboye, Deadline columnist and master of ceremonies, presenting her with the prize following her performance. Dudley said the award would sit alongside her Oscar, Grammy, Brit, and Ivor Novello prizes, telling Bamigboye that there had been a 'sea change' in the opportunities for women in music and film. She also looked ahead to her next project, PBS Masterpiece's sweeping period drama The Forsytes, which is due to premiere this year. Dudley confirmed a second series is filming this summer. The lineup also included the composers: Natalie Holt with Chad Powers; Tom Howe with Shrinking and Dog Man; Nainita Desai with Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf and Secrets of the Penguin; and Alex Seaver with Arcane. Howe revealed that he planned to be involved in Season 4 of Ted Lasso, building on his work on previous seasons of Apple TV+'s Emmy-winning series. Filming starts in July/August, Howe confirmed, after he performed music from Shrinking, which is also featured on Apple. Elsewhere, Desai talked about her love of scoring natural history and why she felt connected to Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf, the documentary that premiered at SXSW on Friday. Holt discussed getting her head around American Football for Chad Powers, the upcoming Hulu series starring Glen Powell. Desai summed up her role like this: 'With film and TV composers, we have this kind of superpower. We have this ability to be able to manipulate people's emotions and make them feel something.' Fittingly, as Sound & Screen reached London, there was a musical tribute to Abbey Road, the iconic recording studio nestled in the north-west of the English capital. Instantly recognizable feature scores for Harry Potter, Goldeneye, and Jurassic World were performed. Mirek Stiles, head of audio products at Abbey Road Studios, told Deadline's Stewart Clarke that there were ongoing 'conversations' with Sam Mendes about recording the score for his four Beatles films at the studio. The Music Box Ensemble provided the orchestra for the event. Steve Morris and Marianne Haynes played violin, Triona Milne was on the viola, Chris Allen was the celloist, Kat Tinker was the pianist, Tommy Emmerton provided guitar, Chris Hill played the bass, and Ralph Salmins was on drums. Sound & Screen was produced in partnership with Abbey Road, PRS for Music, ASCAP, BMI, SCL and AWFC. { pmcCnx({ settings: { plugins: { pmcAtlasMG: { iabPlcmt: 1, }, pmcCnx: { singleAutoPlay: 'auto' } } }, playerId: "32fe25c4-79aa-406a-af44-69b41e969e71", mediaId: "e61910c9-95f0-4053-a1ad-f87c2449ee08", }).render("connatix_player_e61910c9-95f0-4053-a1ad-f87c2449ee08_2"); }); Best of Deadline Sean 'Diddy' Combs Sex-Trafficking Trial Updates: Cassie Ventura's Testimony, $10M Hotel Settlement, Drugs, Violence, & The Feds A Full Timeline Of Blake Lively & Justin Baldoni's 'It Ends With Us' Feud In Court, Online & In The Media Where To Watch All The 'John Wick' Movies: Streamers That Have All Four Films

Matthew McConaughey Shares Rare Look Into Camila Alves Marriage

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are forgetful when it comes to this marriage milestone. The actor shared an Access Hollywood clip to his Instagram, in which Alves says "we just had one of those moments again." McConaughey and Alves tied the knot in Austin, Texas in McConaughey and Camila Alves have been married for over a decade, but even they still forget their anniversary. In a new video posted to the actor's Instagram yesterday, McConaughey shared that while they may not remember the date, they always "try to remember the meaning." In the Access Hollywood clip, McConaughey and Alves are wished a happy 13th anniversary. The couple tied the knot in Austin, Texas in 2012. "Is that it?" the couple asks in response. "Oops, we just had one of those moments again," Alves reveals. "This joke has happened many times before and we don't mean for it to happen, but for whatever reason, Camila and I never remember our anniversary," McConaughey explains. "We've been busted in many a red carpet line." McConaughey and Alves share three children together: Levi, Vida, and Livingston, who were born in 2008, 2010, and 2012, respectively. In April, the family made a rare public appearance at the 13th annual Mack, Jack & McConaughey Gala. It marked their first red carpet outing together in a year. Matthew founded the organization with football coach Mack Brown and country singer Jack Ingram, and it has raised more than $61 million for charitable ventures, specifically organizations dedicated to children's education, health, and wellness. Matthew and Camila's eldest son is set to make his acting debut alongside Chris Pratt in Way of the Warrior Kid, Deadline reported. In his first-ever red carpet interview, Levi shared the advice he's received from his dad, whose career spans over three decades. 'I mean, he gave me a lot of advice, and he was able to mentor me in a couple different ways,' Levi told People. 'But I'd say the main thing for acting—and, pardon my French—is no bullshit in your bones and own what you're doing and make a choice regardless if that ends up being the right one or the wrong one. Commit to it, and know what you're saying.' Read the original article on InStyle

New ‘Wonder Woman' Movie 'Being Written Right Now' Says DC Co-Boss James Gunn

Wonder Woman under James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios hasn't hung up her lasso. 'We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now,' Gunn told EW today. More from Deadline Kevin Smith Praises 'Superman' Trailer's "Really F-ing Smart" Take On U.S. Political Climate: "People Wanna Hope Right Now" James Gunn Confirms 'Superman' Runtime & Clears Up Rumor Warner Bros. Forced Him To Cut It Down 'Sgt. Rock' Halts Pre-Production, Now Eyeing Summer 2026 Production Start DC didn't comment on who exactly is writing the new Wonder Woman. Gunn hasn't yet cast the role of who'll play Princess Diana of Themyscira. That's a big deal. When Gunn and Safran took over the reigns of DC back in late 2022, they essentially began unplugging from the Zack Snyder created DC universe. One of those projects not to move forward was Patty Jenkins' third Wonder Woman movie which wasn't up to snuff. In addition Gunn said today, that the new 'Wonder Woman's a separate thing' to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO/Max series, which is 'slow moving, but it's moving,' per the Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy franchise filmmaker. Gunn also confirmed what was blurted out by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav during last month's earnings call; that Superman, Batman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman were lynchpins to Gunn and Safran's DC. 'I think that's accurate, actually,' Gunn told EW. 'I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two.' The Paradise Lost HBO Max series was first announced by Gunn and Safran when the first unveiled their vision for DC aka 'Gods and Monsters' in early 2023. Set on Wonder Woman's home planet Themyscira, Gunn billed Paradise Lost as 'Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island.' No announced scribes yet for Paradise Lost. As of August 2023 on a press tour for the Netflix movie Heart of Stone, Gadot exclaimed 'I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran [co-chairperson and CEO of DC alongside Gunn] and what they told me, and I'm quoting: 'You're in the best hands. We're going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you've got nothing to worry about.' So time will tell.' At the time of her comments, DC told Deadline that Wonder Woman 3 wasn't in the works. After getting her treatment pulled, Jenkins told the press that when it came to the threequel, 'I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me.' Wonder Woman 3 was promptly announced in the wake of the theatrical day-and-date tanking of Wonder Woman 1984, which grossed $170M WW, $47M U.S. when many theaters around the globe were closed. Warners held the movie through the pandemic but decided to go theatrical and on HBO Max at Christmas 2020 as the first title in the Jason Kilar-run WarnerMedia HBO Max dynamic window experiment. The first Wonder Woman in 2017, also directed by Jenkins, was a box office revolution for a movie directed by a female, earning over $822M around the globe.
