Baldia hospital: CM inaugurates 100-bed SICVD
He said this while speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the 100-bedded SICVD Baldia on Thursday. The ceremony was attended by Minister Health Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Secretary Health Rehan Baloch, and Executive Director SICVD Professor Jawaid Akbar Sial, elected representatives of Kiamari and West district, medical professionals, and others.
The SICVD facility was originally intended to be inaugurated by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. However, due to his leadership of Pakistan's high-level delegation in response to Indian aggression, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah officiated the inauguration on his behalf.
Background: The CM said that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) had initiated the construction of the hospital years ago, funded by the Sindh government, but the project remained incomplete for a considerable time. The Sindh government later collaborated with SICVD, completing the hospital in just over eight months.
The CM proudly announced that SICVD has evolved into the world's largest cardiac healthcare network, operating 10 full-fledged cardiac hospitals and 29 strategically located Chest Pain Units (CPUs) across the province. This extensive network currently treats over two million patients annually, all completely free of cost. He detailed the comprehensive services offered, including open-heart surgeries, stroke interventions, paediatric cardiac care, and emergency angioplasties, ensuring timely access to advanced cardiac treatment even in remote areas.
Karachi alone, Murad Shah noted, is home to 19 chest pain units, strategically positioned in high-traffic locations such as Nagan Chowrangi, Landhi, Gizri, and within institutions like KIHD and JPMC. Beyond Karachi, CPUs are operational in districts like Thatta, Kashmore, Jacobabad, and Umerkot, effectively bringing emergency cardiac care to patients' doorsteps.
Providing a broader context of development in Sindh, the chief minister shared recent data indicating that a total of 579 projects have been initiated or are currently underway across various public service and infrastructure sectors. To ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of these initiatives, 22,621 personnel, including technical staff, frontline workers, and administrative personnel, have been deployed. These figures, he highlighted, underscore the significant scale of development and human resources mobilised to benefit the people of Sindh.

HPV vaccine to help control rising incidence of cancer: minister
LAHORE: Terming the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as a visionary initiative of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Finance Minister, Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said this vaccine will play a vital role in controlling the rising incidence of cancer, particularly cervical cancer among women. While addressing the inaugural ceremony of the HPV vaccine, organized by the Institute of Public Health, Lahore, Mujtaba said this vaccine will help safeguard the health of women in the province. For the first time in Pakistan's history, Punjab has taken the lead in introducing this vaccine, reflecting the government's seriousness in combating cervical cancer, he said, adding: 'The Punjab government is not only launching the vaccine but also ensuring easy access and creating public awareness regarding its importance.' Earlier, the minister also inaugurated two new departments at the Institute of Public Health i.e., the Department of Preventive Pediatrics and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. He said the establishment of these departments is a welcome step to address critical health challenges such as prevention of childhood diseases and tackling malnutrition. K-P, Sindh report new polio infections
A fresh case of poliovirus has been detected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and another in Sindh, pushing Pakistan's total number of polio infections this year to 21, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirmed on Monday. A statement issued by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at Islamabad's NIH said the latest cases involve a six-year-old girl from Union Council Pattan in K-P's Kohistan district and a 21-month-old girl from Union Council Matli-2 in Sindh's Badin district. "With these detections, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 has reached 21, including 13 from K-P, six from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan," the statement noted. "The only effective protection against the debilitating virus is through the repeated administration of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) for every child under five during each campaign, alongside timely completion of all routine immunisations," the statement said. From September 1 to 7, a sub-national polio vaccination campaign will be conducted targeting more than 28 million children under the age of five in 99 districts across all provinces and regions. "The campaign in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be conducted from 15 September. The goal is to ensure every child in these districts receives the vaccine to protect them from the lifelong consequences of polio," it said, adding that the drive forms part of ongoing efforts to quickly strengthen immunity and close existing protection gaps. "Parents and caregivers are strongly urged to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine during this and every campaign," it stressed. Expressing concern over the new case in Sindh, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah called for urgent remedial measures.
