Scholastic Superstars: Victor Hanley, Mahanoy Area
What accomplishments are you most proud of and why?
I am proud to have made distinguished honors all 4 years of high school. Good grades do not come easy for me so I have worked hard for every A. I am very proud of qualifying for States this school year for Cross Country. I have put in a lot of practice since I came in dead last in leagues my freshman year. I have knocked minutes off my time and am very proud of that. I am also proud to have made States for FBLA this year.
What were your most rewarding school or community activities?
My most rewarding school activity has been the weekend backpack food program. I like participating in this program because it makes sure that the younger kids in my school have food to eat over the weekend. My most rewarding community activities are Meals on Wheels and A.C.T.I.O.N. youth group. Meals on Wheels have allowed me to deliver meals to those in need and make friends in my community especially with the high-rise residents. A.C.T.I.O.N. has helped me strengthen my faith and help share it with community activities like our Christmas program and Stations of the Cross which I had the honor of portraying Jesus this year.

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy participating in 5Ks and 10Ks, weight lifting, going on walks with my grandfather, playing with my dogs, and going to Locust Lake.
What are your plans after high school graduation?
I will be attending Lancaster Bible College for Sports Management and to continue my cross country and track career. I have always loved sports and want to be involved in the industry. I think sports instills such a strong work ethic and makes you realize first hand that hard work pays off.
What do you see yourself doing and where do you see yourself living in 15 years?
I see myself working in the sports industry, but at this point, I am not sure where. I hope to be involved with a professional sports team, so only time will tell where I end up.
Whom do you most admire and why?
I admire so many people in my family, it is hard to pick the one I admire the most. I guess if I had to choose it would be my dad who passed away over 6 years ago. He was such a good man who was always involved in the community. I strive to be just like him.
In a sentence, what is your philosophy of life?
Get one percent better every day in everything that you do. (Shout out to my wrestling coach, Nate Fegley, for that one.)
Finish this sentence: The most interesting thing about me is …
My parents were once told I would never talk, walk, and would struggle in school. Well, I proved them wrong!

Phillies' Jesus Luzardo To Be First Pitcher Named ‘Jesus' to Pitch on Easter
MLB has been around for well over 100 years, and with such a storied history, it is rare for a feat to occur for the first time in history. But on April 20th, 2025, Philadelphia Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo is set to make MLB history. Luzardo is scheduled to face his former team, the Miami Marlins, during the third game of the first Phillies-Marlins series of the season. That game is scheduled for April 20th, which also happens to be Easter Sunday. Advertisement It's a coincidence that Jesus Luzardo is expected to start on Easter Sunday, but even Phillies beat reporter Matt Gelb of The Athletic noticed the coincidence. The coincidence of 'Jesus' starting on Easter sparked intrigue about whether there was any other pitcher named 'Jesus' who got a chance to pitch on Easter. According to research done through the database, of MLB players with 'Jesus' in their name, only 13 are pitchers. Of those 13, none have pitched on Easter. When Jesus Luzardo throws his first pitch during the Phillies-Marlins game on Easter Sunday, he will be the first and only player named 'Jesus' to pitch on Easter. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo (44) pitches in the rain against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning at Truist Davis-Imagn Images Major League Baseball has been around for nearly two centuries, but on Easter Sunday in 2025, Luzardo will do something no other player has ever done before. Luzardo getting the chance to pitch on Easter is already wild enough, but it gets even stranger as one of the 12 other pitchers named 'Jesus' is on the Marlins, and could also pitch on Easter Sunday. Advertisement Marlins right-handed reliever Jesus Tinoco has a chance to pitch on Easter Sunday, and could be the second ever player named 'Jesus' to pitch on Easter. It would be a major coincidence that on the same day that a player named 'Jesus' pitches on Easter for the first time, another pitcher during the same game named 'Jesus' pitches on Easter. With Luzardo's success since joining the Phillies, he is in a prime position to rise to the occasion and put together a great performance against his former team. The Phillies acquired Luzardo from the Marlins in the offseason for two prospects. Since joining the Phillies, Luzardo has been great. He has a 2.31 ERA, two wins, no losses, 29 strikeouts to just seven walks in 23 and one-third innings pitched. Luzardo will face his former team for the first time, while making MLB history as the first pitcher named 'Jesus' to pitch on Easter. 'This is going to be special': National HBCU Battle of the Bands coming to FAU Stadium
Some of the top Historically Black College and University marching bands in the United States will participate in a national band competition at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton in January 2026. Under the contract recently approved by Palm Beach County, at least six collegiate bands from HBCUs will perform at Flagler Credit Union Stadium on Jan. 17, which also is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The schools have not been revealed yet, but some of the more popular schools are Florida A&M, Grambling and Bethune-Cookman. A similar "Battle of the Bands" in Houston last year generated an estimated economic impact of more than $20 million for that area, a figure county officials hope to replicate here. 'This is going to be a great event,' said County Commissioner Gregg Weiss. 'These musicians are incredibly talented." Immigration crackdown: He played Jesus on Good Friday. Ten days later, he was deported to Guatemala. The Houston event, held at NRG Stadium at the beginning of the football season in August, generated 22,000 room nights and had a "media value" of more than $19 million, according to an economic impact statement prepared for Houston. HBCUs are known for their marching bands. The contract will result in the county hosting one of only two national competitions, with the other one being offered in Houston. MORE: Palm Beach County tourism is booming and bed tax is generating record amounts of revenue The Boca Raton event will be branded "Battle of the Bands in the Palm Beaches' and occur on Martin Luther King Day for the next five years. Bed taxes of up to $6.4 million will be used to fund the program. The tax is paid by tourists who visit the county. Some of the costs will be recouped through food and beverage, ticket and parking sales; the county will receive 35% of that revenue. Visitors from several HBCU schools are expected to spend the weekend in Palm Beach County. They are expected to include nearly 8,000 family members of competing band members. More than 2,200 band members are expected to participate. MORE: Work underway on $108M makeover to Jupiter spring-training home for Marlins, Cardinals Event sponsors will be responsible for all of the costs involving the planning, organization and production of the event. They will also have to provide a detailed economic impact report documenting the economic contributions of the event. George Linley, executive director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, noted that the collegiate bands will be participating in other events throughout the weekend, as they do in Houston. Those ancillary events are expected to include: A career fair designed to connect students with HBCUs and potential employers in STEM fields that focus on the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math. An "Emerging Entrepreneur Experience" supporting emerging entrepreneurs by providing networking opportunities, resources, and expert guidance. A Homeless Outreach Program that will result in the distribution of hundreds of meals. Linley noted that on Jan. 19, two days after the Battle of Bands event at FAU, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens will host the college football championship. The football game will be used 'as a catalyst' to boost the FAU event. The sponsor of the event is required to record the Battle of the Bands and, within 45 business days, present the recording on The Palm Beaches YouTube channel. The event will also be streamed. The bands compete in front of an audience, but no winners are selected. "This really going to be something special," said Emanuel Perry, executive director of the Tourist Development Council. "It is going to attract people from all over the country." Mike Diamond is a journalist at The Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY Florida Network.
