As Philippines reels from fatal crashes, road safety overhaul calls mount

On May 1, Jerry Tuazon was driving his wife, eight-year-old son and six others to a Christian youth camp in Pangasinan, more than 200km north of Manila, when they stopped briefly at a petrol station along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway.

The next thing he remembered was waking up in a hospital bed.
'I thought I was dreaming. I said, 'God, please wake me up from this dream. This has gone far too long, this is not where I'm supposed to be,'' he told This Week in Asia.
Tuazon was the only survivor in his group of nine. A multiple car pile-up claimed 10 lives, including his wife and child, and left 40 others injured.
'I had a bad feeling in my gut but I could not explain why,' said Jedidiah Castor Miral, a cousin of Tuazon's wife. 'It wasn't until my sister called in hysterics, saying 'They're all gone'.'

'At first, we could not believe the news and we had asked why it happened, although it later dawned on us, 'Who are we to question God's will?'' Miral said.

Pogos in Pakistan? Scheme to traffic Filipinos shows ‘evolution' of scam operations

A scheme to traffic Filipinos into Pakistan to work for gaming firms formerly based in the Philippines has exposed the latest evolution of online scam networks linked to the controversial Pogo industry, immigration officials and analysts warn. The case – the first known incident involving Filipinos being trafficked to Pakistan – suggests that criminal syndicates previously operating under Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (Pogo) licences are shifting to new jurisdictions following a government crackdown on the sector. On July 6, four Filipinos bound for Hong Kong were intercepted at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport after immigration officers found discrepancies in their statements. Investigators later discovered that their real destination was Pakistan – and that one of them, a former Pogo worker, had been recruited by a Chinese ex-employer who had relocated operations after President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr ordered a nationwide Pogo shutdown last year. In October, the Marcos administration ordered foreign Pogo workers in the country to voluntarily downgrade their visas before 2025 or face deportation. Fire at US assisted living facility kills 9, injures 30

Nine people have died in a fire at an assisted living facility in Massachusetts, where people were hanging out of windows screaming for help, authorities said on Monday. At least 30 people were injured. Firefighters responded to the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River at about 9.50pm on Sunday and were met with heavy smoke and flames at the front of the building, with occupants trapped inside, the state Department of Fire Services said in a news release. About 70 people live in the house. The fire was out by Monday morning and firefighters were able to get inside and rescue numerous occupants. About 50 firefighters responded, including 30 who were off duty. Many of those rescued were taken to local and regional hospitals in varying conditions. Five firefighters suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the statement said. 'This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,' fire chief Jeffrey Bacon said. He said 'multiple people were hanging out the windows looking to be rescued'. Family members who showed up said police were trying to break windows.

Call for Hong Kong to set up registry of filicide cases to reduce killings

Two years ago, a mother in Hong Kong was accused of suffocating her three children in their home in Sham Shui Po. Police said they found blood stains on a pillow and in the mouth and nose of one of the girls. The mother was arrested after she and her brother alerted the force. Last year, a debt-ridden father threw his seven-year-old son off the rooftop of a shopping centre before he jumped to his death, while the boy was critically injured. Hong Kong has been repeatedly shocked by cases centred on parents allegedly trying to kill their children, with at least three recorded each year from 2020 to 2024, according to a count of reports by the Post. Victims ranged from newborns to adult children who were intellectually or physically disabled. In interviews with the Post, experts in health and social work called on the government to set up a registry to document and identify patterns in these tragedies, so authorities could devise measures to prevent future cases.
