A haven for many Americans and asylum seekers, Portugal now tightens citizenship rules for foreigners
Portugal has changed its citizenship law. The government says the country needs stronger links with new citizens. The cabinet approved a decree that raises the residency threshold for naturalisation. The plan also adjusts family reunion rules and adds tests of culture and democratic commitment.
Longer Residency Rule
Most applicants had to live in Portugal for five years. They will now have to live in Portugal for a decade. The change applies to people from all countries except those that share Portuguese as an official language. The cabinet says extra years will show a clear link with the national community. Officials note that naturalisation numbers fell in 2023 even before the change.

Separate Path for Lusophone Citizens
People from Brazil, Angola, Mozambique and other Portuguese-speaking states will face a seven-year wait. The cabinet kept a shorter path to respect historical ties. Lawmakers say the rule keeps faith with language bonds while still asking for a significant period inside the country. Lusophone communities form the largest foreign group, so the rule will affect many future applicants.

Culture and Security Tests
New applicants must pass language checks as before. They must also show knowledge of Portuguese history and culture. The decree blocks applicants who served any prison sentence. It also asks a signed pledge to respect democratic rules. The interior ministry will run checks with police and security agencies. Authorities can cancel naturalisation later if a naturalised citizen commits a serious crime.
Live Events
Family Reunion Limits
Current law lets a resident bring partners and adult relatives soon after arrival. The decree sets a two-year wait for sponsors. Relatives must be minors. The measure aims to control growth of extended families. Officials say the policy follows similar steps in other European Union countries. Migrant groups plan to study the final text before reacting.
Possible Loss of Citizenship
The decree allows courts to withdraw citizenship from people naturalised under the new law if they later receive heavy criminal sentences. The measure will not apply to citizens by birth. The government argues that withdrawal protects public trust in the passport. Civil rights lawyers say courts must act with caution to avoid statelessness.

Political Context
The anti-immigration Chega party won many seats in the March election. Chega asked for longer residency rules during the campaign. The minority centre-right cabinet needs support in parliament, and Chega has signalled approval of the decree. The government says the proposal appears in its programme, not only in opposition demands. Debate will continue when the draft reaches lawmakers for confirmation.
Portugal has 10.5 million residents. At least 1.5 million are foreign residents. Brazilians number more than 450,000. The migration agency reports 141,300 naturalisations in 2023, a fall from 2022. More than 400,000 naturalisation files wait for review. Officials predict the new rules will slow future demand and let staff clear the queue.
Implementation Timeline
The cabinet plans to publish the decree in the official journal in July. The rules will take effect thirty days later. Applicants who already completed five years of residence must file before the change begins if they want the shorter wait. Lawyers expect a surge in last-minute filings. The migration agency is preparing extra staff and online slots. Officials say public information campaigns will run in several languages to explain deadlines and new steps.
FAQs
Why did Portugal raise the residency period to 10 years?
Officials seek stronger social ties. They argue longer residence shows commitment, supports language learning, reduces influx, and meets voter concern over rapid migration growth and integration pressure, also strengthening society.
Can new citizens lose
Portuguese nationality
under the decree?
Yes. Courts may cancel the nationality of naturalised people convicted of serious crimes. Measure protects passport trust, applies after new law, and does not affect those who gained nationality by birth.

'100% Communist Lunatic': Trump Hits Out At Zohran Mamdani After New York Primary Win
Last Updated: Donald Trump hit out at the leaders supporting the 33-year-old democratic socialist, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Senator Chuck Schumer. US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the victory of Indian-origin socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary election, calling him a '100 per cent communist lunatic" and accused the Democratic Party of having 'crossed the line." In a post on Truth Social, the US President hit out at the leaders supporting the 33-year-old democratic socialist, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Senator Chuck Schumer, after former New York governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the election. 'It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous," Trump said. He also mocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling him 'Cryin' Chuck" for supporting Mamdani. 'Even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" Trump said in the post. In another post, Trump suggested Democrats should nominate Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett for President and give Cabinet roles to 'AOC+3." He added, 'With Mamdani as our future Communist Mayor, the country is really screwed." The son of Indian‑born filmmaker Mira Nair and Indian‑Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran Mamdani declared victory Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded. With 93 per cent of the votes counted, Mamdani led with 43.5 per cent, while Cuomo trailed at 36.4 per cent. Cuomo praised Mamdani's campaign, calling it 'smart, good, and impactful." If Mamdani wins the final race, he will become New York's first Muslim mayor. The son of Indian-origin immigrants, he is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America party — the kind of niche, leftist affiliation that many Democratic leaders believe their party needs to shed. His win has deepened divisions within the Democratic Party, with two union leaders stepping down from the party's leadership board. Mamdani has represented Astoria, Queens, in the New York State Assembly since 2021. His mayoral platform includes plans for city-run grocery stores, free buses, and rent freezes—all to be funded by a proposed $10 billion tax increase on wealthy residents and corporations. Who Is Zohran Mamdani? Zohran Kwame Mamdani is the son of Indian-origin immigrant parents: his mother is the Padma Bhushan awardee Mira Nair, who has Punjabi roots from Delhi and grew up in Odisha; while his father is the academic Mahmood Mamdani, who is Ugandan and traces his roots to Gujarat. Mamdani, who took New York City by storm with his campaign and an enthusiastic endorsement from another internet favourite, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, was declared victorious in the Democratic mayoral primary late on Tuesday (June 24). 'In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it's done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City," Mamdani said in a post on X. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, and raised in New York City. He moved to New York with his parents when he was seven. His mother Mira Nair has won applause for films like 'Monsoon Wedding' and 'Salaam Bombay!'. Trump demands an end to Israeli PM Netanyahu's 'witch hunt' corruption trial, says ‘the US saved Israel, and now is going to save Bibi'
US President Donald Trump has publicly demanded the cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial, calling it a politically motivated 'witch hunt' unworthy of a wartime leader. 'Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State (of Israel),' Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. 'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu.' The Israeli prime minister, Trump said, had been 'summoned to Court on Monday for the continuation of this long-running, politically motivated case, concerning cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo — TrumpDailyPosts (@TrumpDailyPosts) Praise for Netanyahu's wartime leadership Trump's comments came shortly after a US-backed ceasefire took effect following 12 days of deadly conflict between Israel and Iran. The president did not hold back his praise. Live Events 'Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran,' he said. 'Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land.' He added, 'Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel, and the result was something that nobody thought was possible, a complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World.' Despite the ceasefire, Trump had criticised Israel the previous day for launching fresh strikes on Iran almost immediately after the truce was announced. 'Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I've never seen before,' he said. 'I'm not happy with Israel.' Still, by Wednesday, Trump had returned to defending Netanyahu, saying, 'Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me.' Netanyahu is currently standing trial in three criminal cases—Cases 1000, 2000 and 4000—each involving allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He was indicted in 2019, and the trial formally began in May 2020. The charges range from receiving luxury gifts—cigars, champagne, and jewellery worth over $260,000—from wealthy associates, to allegedly trying to secure favourable media coverage by offering regulatory favours. He has consistently denied all accusations, calling them 'fake' and insisting he has done nothing wrong. Cross-examination in the ongoing trial resumed on 3 June in a Tel Aviv court and is expected to last up to a year. According to reports by Anadolu Agency, this is the first time in Israeli history that a sitting prime minister has taken the stand as a criminal defendant. Trump's defence echoes his own legal battles Trump, who is himself facing a wave of legal challenges and criminal indictments in the United States, drew parallels between Netanyahu's case and his own. 'BREAKING NEWS... I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel... is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great wartime Prime Minister!' he wrote, again using his familiar language to discredit the prosecution. He added, 'This is the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has ever been on trial… He has been going through this 'Horror Show' since May of 2020—Unheard of!' Pardon not likely, says Israeli President Despite Trump's call for a pardon, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has clarified through media statements that no such request has been received and that a pardon is 'not currently on the table.' Under Israeli law, Netanyahu is not required to resign unless convicted and the conviction is upheld by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, international legal scrutiny continues. The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague has issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity for alleged actions in Gaza, including targeting civilians and using starvation as a tactic. The renewed public backing from Trump adds another layer to an already complex situation. Netanyahu's political standing is increasingly tied to his image as a wartime leader, especially after Israel's aggressive campaign against Iran's nuclear and military sites. The United States had reportedly joined that effort, striking two Iranian facilities with bunker-busting bombs and launching guided missiles from a submarine. Trump's comment—'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu'—underscores just how tightly he has tethered Netanyahu's fate to Washington's influence. But whether words from Washington will influence legal proceedings in Tel Aviv remains to be seen. For now, the Israeli judiciary appears to be moving forward—with or without America's blessing.

Siddaramaiah announces ₹50-crore grant for constituencies
With rising discontent within the Congress legislature over alleged inadequate development funds, chief minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced a ₹ 50 crore grant for each assembly constituency, aiming to defuse tensions among party MLAs. The funds are expected to be released in July, and officials have been instructed to prioritise works based on legislators' recommendations, said a leader in the know of the development. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced a ₹ 50 crore grant for each assembly constituency, aiming to defuse tensions among party MLAs (File photo) The move follows a series of public outbursts from senior Congress leaders, including BR Patil, NY Gopalakrishna, Belur Gopalakrishna and Raju Kage, who flagged slow project execution, inadequate bureaucratic responsiveness, and underwhelming infrastructure development in their constituencies. To address these issues directly, the chief minister will soon begin daily breakfast meetings with small groups of MLAs to hear grievances and resolve them, the leader quoted above said. Siddaramaiah on Wednesday evening met disgruntled Congress MLAs BR Patil and Raju Kage after returning from Delhi. According to officials, housing minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan was also present at the meeting, in the wake of Patil's allegation. The leader quoted above said that the chief secretary has asked all departments to act promptly on requests made by MLAs, particularly those concerning constituency-level development, while maintaining legal compliance. Basavaraj Rayareddy, economic advisor to the CM, acknowledged that implementation delays had tested the patience of legislators but rejected the suggestion of a rebellion. Speaking in New Delhi, he said: 'Siddaramaiah, who also holds the finance portfolio, has stabilised the state's financial condition over the past two years. The frustration among MLAs is about slow implementation — not opposition to the chief minister.' Rayareddy attributed current constraints to policy lapses under the previous BJP-led administration, including irregular contract allocations and delayed fund releases. BR Patil recently accused officials of accepting bribes in public housing projects. This prompted a strong response from RDPR and IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge, who said Patil could have addressed his concerns with senior leadership instead of going public. 'Patil is a senior leader and I respect his ideology, but such issues should be discussed internally,' he said. Referring to a leaked phone call in which an official denies Patil's claims, he added: 'Legal action will follow if there's evidence of wrongdoing.' Defending the political dynamics of constituency job allocations, Priyank said it was natural for local residents to expect employment when major government institutions like the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences are set up in their regions. Kagwad MLA Raju Kage, another leader who criticised the government citing a 'collapsed administration' and lack of funds and hinted at resignation over delay in implementation of projects in his constituency. Responding to this, Priyank remarked, 'Every MLA expects more money for their constituency — what's wrong with that?' Meanwhile, home minister G Parameshwara said that the chief minister would engage with all dissatisfied legislators. 'These are constituency-specific issues, not state-level disagreements. Siddaramaiah will resolve them,' he said. Parameshwara revealed that MLAs have already been directed to prepare action plans for projects worth ₹ 50 crore in their segments. 'Even I am preparing such a plan. But what's the use if we don't have funds?' he asked. He also acknowledged complaints about inaccessible ministers and said the chief minister would take corrective steps. When asked whether the Congress high command had instructed the CM to speak to disgruntled legislators, Parameshwara said, 'I am not aware of what transpired at the meeting or whether such instructions have been given. ' Reacting to the allegations of insufficient funds, BJP MLC CT Ravi on Wednesday demanded the resignation of housing minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, alleging corruption in his department. 'Whether it's his PA or departmental officials, Zameer should take responsibility. He must resign and face the investigation. Is he afraid of going to jail?' Ravi said at a press conference in Mangaluru.
