Accounting excellence the TAR UMT way

As one of the oldest professions in civilised history, accountancy, finance and business are undoubtedly among the more popular tertiary education options to study in Malaysia or even globally.
With so many institutions offering accountancy, finance and business programmes, many students will not be looking for just a degree, they will consider institutions that can provide additional benefits such as an industry-relevant academic syllabus, qualified teaching staff, compelling study experience, or a fast track to a professional qualification.
Among the institutions that fulfill all these qualities is Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), which has produced many accounting, finance and business graduates for over five decades.
One of the key aspects that strengthen TAR UMT's position is the university's partnership with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) that dates back to 1971.
This long-term partnership has resulted in the university consistently nurturing and producing highly skilled graduates for more than five decades.
Such a solid track record has also positioned TAR UMT as ACCA's Platinum Approved Learning Partner, the highest and most prestigious level of approval awarded by ACCA to institution partners that meet their global best practice benchmarks.
On top of that, TAR UMT holds the distinction of being the one and only institution in the world to conduct the Internally Assessed ACCA Applied Skills programme. As such, upon completing their studies in relevant accountancy, finance and business degree programmes, TAR UMT students will be exempted from up to nine ACCA Applied Knowledge and ACCA Skill level papers. With that, TAR UMT students are able to complete the ACCA examinations much quicker than usual.
It is such benefits that draw many students like Ng Shu Cynn and Er Xin Ni to pursue their studies at TAR UMT.
Shu Cynn who completed her Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme, also added another feather to her cap by scoring the highest mark in Malaysia and fourth in the World for the Advanced Taxation (ATX) paper in the ACCA September 2024 examination.
"Studying the ACCA syllabus would have been more challenging if I did not have knowledgeable and supportive lecturers. They have been an important part of my journey in preparation for the examinations.'
"In addition, with the exemptions, I am now only one paper away from completing my ACCA exam, which will give me a huge advantage in my own professional growth," said Shu Cynn, who is currently working as a tax associate.
Xin Ni, another Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) graduate, echoed Shu Cynn's sentiments about the advantages of studying for ACCA in TAR UMT. The Kuala Lumpur-born lass obtained the highest mark in Malaysia for the Advanced Financial Management (AFM) paper and highest combined mark in Malaysia for the ACCA June 2024 examinations.
'Based on my own study experience, I can confidently say that the opportunity to graduate with both an honours degree and a globally recognised professional qualification is a huge boon to those who are aiming for a bright future in this field.
'Although at one point I had to study online due to the pandemic, my lecturers have always gone the extra mile to help us understand the topics. Their methods of breaking down complicated concepts using simple metaphors, and encouraging active discussions using real-world case studies were of great help to me. I not only understood what was being taught but I have also picked up good interactive skills which are helping me a lot in my career.'
'I can now tick completing ACCA examinations and move on to obtaining the necessary work experience to become a full-fledged ACCA member in the future,' Xin Ni added.
TAR UMT's continuous dedication and commitment to bring the globally recognised professional accountancy qualification to Malaysia has resulted in the University producing over 100 ACCA prizewinners since 1971.

RM1mil student loan fund set up to support future generations

THE legacy of Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong lives on through a generous RM1 million donation towards student loan funds, ensuring financially challenged students can pursue their education with greater ease. Datuk Wong Shung Yen, son of the late Mook Leong, contributed RM500,000 to Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), establishing the TARC-Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong Student Loan. The initiative marks the 135th donor loan under the TAR UMT Student Loan Fund, a revolving, interest-free financial aid programme aimed at helping deserving students complete their tertiary education. During a mock cheque presentation ceremony at TAR UMT's Kuala Lumpur campus on May 15, the donation was handed over to Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of the Board of Governors (BOG) and TAR UMT Alumni Council (TAC). In a second significant contribution, Shung Yen presented another RM500,000 cheque to Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat, President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), for the establishment of a similar fund: UTAR-Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong Student Loan. Prominent figures present at the event included Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, member of the Board of Trustees, TARC Education Foundation, Datuk Chong Sin Woon, member of the Board of Governors, and Prof Datuk Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT. Reflecting on Mook Leong's unwavering dedication to education, Chan recalled his principled leadership and tireless efforts to foster unity across Malaysia's diverse communities. 'I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Shun Yen for establishing this student loan fund in his late father's honour. If Tan Sri Wong were with us today, he would embrace this initiative with immense pride and joy. This is a truly meaningful way to keep his legacy alive,' said Chan. For Shun Yen, the establishment of these funds is more than just a tribute—it is a continuation of his father's mission to support students in need. 'This initiative is not solely about honouring my father's name; it is about creating opportunities for financially challenged students to complete their education—something my father was deeply passionate about,' said Shun Yen. Throughout his career, Mook Leong played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia's educational financing landscape. He was instrumental in the formation of Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (KOJADI), one of the country's earliest structured student loan programmes. His leadership on the board helped KOJADI grow into one of Malaysia's most impactful education loan cooperatives. 'This is the most fitting way to honour my father—not through mere ceremony, but through continuity. We hope the fund will continue to support students with the same drive and determination that my father once had—so that they, in time, may give back to the communities that uplifted them, just as he did,' said Shun Yen, expressing gratitude to Chan for his efforts in bringing the initiative to life. With these newly established funds, the late Mook Leong's commitment to educational empowerment remains firmly in place, ensuring Malaysia's future generations will continue to have access to financial support as they pursue their dreams.

The collaboration with Arm, which will grant students access to the company's architecture and development software tools, and the newly introduced programme, marks more than a milestone for the university - it represents Malaysia's resolve to move from users of technology to creators of it, said TAR UMT board of governors chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy. 'Our students will not just learn, they will lead,' he said in his speech at the signing ceremony between TAR UMT and Arm at the varsity's Kuala Lumpur campus on May 15. Developed in close collaboration with the industry, he said that the MCP provides a flexible, modular curriculum focused on System-on-Chip (SoC) design and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Describing the initiative as timely and strategic, he said the move aligns with the NSS. Chan, who is also Alumni Council chairman, said the tie-up with Arm will position the university and its industry collaborators to assist the nation become a leader in semiconductor innovation, design and talent development. 'Such collaborations are essential in developing graduates who are not only job ready but also innovation ready,' he added. Last May, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the NSS aimed at making Malaysia an indispensable link in the global semiconductor supply chain. Currently, the nation is the sixth largest exporter of semiconductors globally and is aiming to move further up the value chain through a targeted focus on front-end activities. In his opening remarks, Arm Limited vice-president of North America Sales C.K Tseng said the Arm Academic Access programme includes more than 170 global institutions and active research projects. He added that the programme, which has over 1,000 academic users, is also supporting numerous academic collaboration. 'The agreement between TAR UMT and Arm is not just about enabling students and educators - it is also about empowering the next generation in the critical semiconductor sector,' he said, adding that the collaboration is also in line with Malaysia's industrial transformation agenda. He said the goal was to see Malaysia produce 10,000 semiconductor sector professionals who will be involved in value-added up steam activities as opposed to mere back-end activities. During the event, memorandum of understandings (MOUs) were also signed between TAR UMT and IC design industry collaborators, namely, Spring Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, Starfive Technology International Sdn Bhd and Efinix Technology Sdn Bhd.
