Christian Pulisic Turns Heads with Reaction to Criticism Amid USMNT Absence
Christian Pulisic Turns Heads with Reaction to Criticism Amid USMNT Absence originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
On Thursday, the United States Men's National Team made it official that head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be heading to the CONCACAF Gold Cup — the final major tournament before the United States co-hosts the 2026 World Cup — without team captain Christian Pulisic.

According to ESPN, Pulisic and his team proposed the break to the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) after Pulisic played more than 3,500 minutes in all competitions for AC Milan across the 2024-2025 season.
Fellow national team veterans Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna, Antonee Robinson and Yunus Musah are also missing after their respective European campaigns.
Since Pulisic's absence was first reported, criticism has been repeatedly aimed at the Yanks' No. 10, most recently from USMNT legend Landon Donovan on Sunday.

The Pulisic family did not take kindly to Donovan's veiled comments after 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo battled through injury to help Portugal win the UEFA Nations League — a continental trophy similar to the Gold Cup.

"This is what it means to represent your country,' Donovan said on Fox Sports' coverage of Portugal's win over Spain. '(Cristiano Ronaldo) is 40 years old. He played a long-(expletive) season. He was out there grinding and hurt himself in the process. And I can't help but think about some of our guys who are on vacation not wanting to play in Gold Cup. It's pissing me off.'
Pulisic's father, Mark, heard Donovan's criticism and clapped back Sunday night on Instagram.
"This guy is .. talking about commitment.. look in the mirror + grow a pair and call names out or are you afraid next time you want an interview you will get rejected again," he wrote in an Instagram post.

His son liked the post — the first public response of any kind from the American captain since his Gold Cup absence was first reported. USMNT fans sounded off with their thoughts on social media.
"This is getting spicy," wrote one fan on X. "I remember how awkward Pulisic and Donovan were speaking to each other last year. I just assumed they were both introverted but looks like something was already brewing in the background."
"This is reminiscent of Claudio Reyna coming to his son's defense," noted a response. "Circumstances are different but it is sad that this kind of drama follows our star USMNT players."

"Donovan helped the US make the quarterfinals of the World Cup," said one reply. "What has Pulisic won with the USMNT?"
"Why hasn't Pulisic said ANYTHING himself?" a fan said of the captain. "He's letting everyone else talk for him. It doesn't show any sense of leadership or responsibility."
Pulisic has 32 goals and 18 assists in 76 appearances for the United States, but he will not add to that total this summer.
After losing to Turkiye 2-1 on Saturday, USMNT plays another warm up friendly on Tuesday against Switzerland before beginning the Gold Cup on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago.

Harvey Elliott helps England make winning start in Euro Under-21 against Czechs
In a week that England's senior side have hardly covered themselves in glory, perhaps the under-21s could make it another memorable summer? While Lee Carsley has played down his youthful squad's chances of emulating Dave Sexton's back-to-back triumphs in becoming European champions in 1982 and 1984, a convincing and mature victory over a boisterously backed Czech Republic team hinted that it may not be beyond the realms of possibility. Goals from Harvey Elliott and Charlie Cresswell sandwiched by another from Jonathan Rowe were enough to allow England to take a commanding position in Group B after brief hopes of a comeback from the Czech Republic. Victory over Slovenia, who were beaten 3-0 by Germany in their opening match, on Sunday would assure a place in the quarter-finals. Advertisement Related: Czech Republic 1-3 England: European Under-21 Championship – live reaction Carsley had warned that an inexperienced squad that contains just two of those who won in Georgia two years ago could look 'a little bit clunky'. But while Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson managed to pick up a booking after just 17 seconds for a misjudged tackle, England made an encouraging start with the captain, James McAtee, employed as a false 9 in the absence of Liam Delap, who is one of several players missing due to Club World Cup commitments. Omari Hutchinson forced Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek into a reaction save at his near post before Vaclav Sejk was inches away from connecting with a cross that fizzed across the face of goal at the other end. The large contingent of red-shirted supporters who had made the short journey across the border and made up 90% of the crowd sensed an opportunity for a country that has failed to get past the group stage of this competition since 2011. It needed a solid save from Brighton's James Beadle, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, to keep out Stepan Chaloupek's header from a free-kick when the Czech Republic captain found himself totally unmarked before Alex Scott did well to block a goalbound shot from a corner. With Liverpool's Jarell Quansah and Charlie Cresswell of Toulouse looking shaky at the back, England were riding their luck as Carsley assumed his favoured touchline position on his haunches. Advertisement Such is the depth of talent in this age group that seven members of Thomas Tuchel's latest senior squad – including Jude Bellingham, Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer – were still eligible to take part here. Newcastle's Tino Livramento, who has already won a senior cap during Carsley's spell as interim manager, was instrumental in the opening goal. His cross was almost deflected in but McAtee kept the ball in play and it was drilled in by Elliott. Beadle then had to be alert to prevent the ball from trickling over his line after it had come off Qunasah's arm following a goalmouth scramble moments after England had taken the lead. Once more it was Livramento who seemed to have settled their nerves three minutes after the restart when he darted into the area and delivered a cross that Rowe managed to get the slightest of flicks on to deceive the unsighted Hornicek at his near post. But the Czech Republic hit back immediately when Livramento was caught out by a cross from Sejk and Daniel Fila gratefully headed in. Advertisement 'We've got to play,' came the message from Carsley as his side attempted to wrest back control. The introduction of Birmingham's Jay Stansfield and Ethan Nwaneri of Arsenal from the bench for the last 20 minutes was an indication that the job was not done. It didn't take long for Nwaneri to make an impact, producing a cheeky nutmeg before setting off on a mazy run that saw his shot deflect just wide. Cresswell sealed the victory minutes later when he headed in Scott's corner to give Carsley the perfect start.

2025 Gold Cup odds: Mexico slight favorites to win tournament
The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off on Saturday, with Mexico taking on the Dominican Republic in the opening match on FS1 at 4:15 PM E.T. Arguably the biggest storyline comes from the United States, as the summer tournament was supposed to serve as an opportunity for the team to gel with new manager Mauricio Pochettino— but the roster is not what most expected. Christian Pulisic, Jedi Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Sergino Dest are among a group of regular stars not participating in this summer's tournament for various reasons. Instead, the USMNT looks more like a greener, motley crew of sorts, mixing guys who have World Cup and European experience with those that play in MLS and have never before been to a major tournament with the senior squad. The U.S. has won seven Gold Cup titles, most recently in 2021. Mexico, a team that's finding its competitive footing and won the Nations League Finals this spring, claimed the championship in 2023. The only time the tournament was won by a country other than the U.S. or Mexico was in 2000, with Canada taking home the title that year. Mexico is currently the slight favorite to win it all at +170, with the USMNT not far behind at +200. Let's dive into the odds via DraftKings Sportsbook as of June 12. Mexico: +170 (bet $10 to win $27 total)USA: +200 (bet $10 to win $30 total)Canada: +550 (bet $10 to win $65 total)Saudi Arabia: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total)Panama: +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total)Jamaica: +1400 (bet $10 to win $150 total)Costa Rica: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)Honduras: +3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total)El Salvador: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)Guatemala: +10000 (bet $10 to win $1,010 total)Suriname: +15000 (bet $10 to win $1,510 total)Curacao: +20000 (bet $10 to win $2,010 total)Trinidad and Tobago: +25000 (bet $10 to win $2,510 total)Haiti: +25000 (bet $10 to win $2,510 total)Guadeloupe: +25000 (bet $10 to win $2,510 total)Dominican Republic: +25000 (bet $10 to win $2,510 total) The U.S. struggled in the two warm-up matches leading up to the tournament, losing 2-1 to Turkey on June 7 and 4-0 to Switzerland on June 10. Mexico on the other hand, defeated Turkey 1-0 and lost 4-2 to the Swiss. Canada is third on the oddsboard at +550, and will be a team to watch after finishing in fourth place at the 2024 Copa América tournament. While they'll be without star player Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) as he's recovering from injury, they have other notable veterans like Jonathan David (Lille) and Stephen Eustaquio (Porto) and Tajon Buchanan (Inter Milan/Villareal).
