ANTALYA: Love him, or loathe him, Virat Kohli was undeniably one of cricket's brightest entertainers.
On Monday, the cricketing world celebrated a player who not only excelled at the highest levels but transformed the very fabric of Test cricket, as he announced his retirement from the format.
With an impressive tally of 9,230 runs across 123 Tests and a commendable average of 46.85, Kohli ranks amongst India's cricketing elite, sitting below legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
However, Kohli's contributions go beyond just numbers. In an era where the faster-paced T20 cricket reigns supreme, threatening to overshadow the traditional format, Kohli emerged as a beacon of hope for Test cricket.
He instilled a sense of pride and relevance in the timeless art of batting, ensuring that the next generation of Indian cricketers reveres the Baggy Blue and what it represents in their rich cricketing history.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kohli brought an infectious zeal to the field. He embodied every moment he spent in the whites, manifesting an unwavering passion that resonated with fans and aspiring cricketers alike.
Kohli's tenure was packed with memorable highs and intense rivalries that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
The significance of Kohli's impact is felt not just in the statistics but also in the way he has inspired countless young cricketers to dream beyond the boundaries of the T20 format.
'It's been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket,' Kohli wrote on Instagram.
'Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It's tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I'll carry for life. There's something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.
'As I step away from this format, it's not easy - but it feels right. I've given it everything I had, and it's given me back so much more than I could've hoped for.
'I'm walking away with a heart full of gratitude - for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I'll always look back at my Test career with a smile.'
South Africans certainly enjoyed their battles with Kohli, especially on India's tour here in 2022.
Kohli was desperate to become the first Indian captain to lead his nation to a series victory on South African soil, and became increasingly frustrated when it became apparent his self-proclaimed destiny was going to elude him.
It all bubbled over in the second Test at Newlands, which the Proteas won to share the series and deny Kohli's India, when he screamed into the stump mic after a decision went against his team.
"Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch the opposition all the time."
But it was that passion that will be missed more than his elegant runs. He transcended mere batting prowess, garnering respect and admiration for his mental fortitude, competitive spirit, and as a leader who demanded excellence.
Kohli's departure from Test cricket may close a chapter in the history books, but the influence he leaves behind has undoubtedly shaped the future of the game.

Percy Tau: R450k salary for two years from Kaizer Chiefs perfect
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly attacker Percy Tau has admitted he would not mind playing for Kaizer Chiefs. The 31-year-old Bafana Bafana international is in the country, and was spotted attending Orlando Pirates' final game against Magesi FC last month. Tau is currently a free agent following his release from Qatar SC whom he barely spent six months with. Speaking to Robert Marawa on 947 on Wednesday, Tau said while he would give Sundowns first preference, he's open to playing for any PSL club. However, whoever wants his services should be reasonable because he's also a reasonable individual. Asked about whether he would consider a move to Chiefs if Sundowns don't offer him a deal, Tau was non-hesitant. Tau was cornered into revealing the figures of how much he would accept from Chiefs if Dr Kaizer Motaung was to approach him. Percy Tau flirts with Kaizer Chiefs. Orlando Pirates find replacement for Paseka Mako?
Two left-backs are not enough at clubs like Orlando Pirates to compete in the Betway Premiership , especially with the CAF Champions League returning to the Orlando Stadium next season. Paseko Mako has left the club, minus one left-back. According to this report, the Sea Robbers need an addition to compete and cover for Deon Hotto and Yanga Madiba . Kick Off believes that SuperSport United and Amajita captain Neo Rapoo has been noticed by the Orlando Pirates scouts. Rapoo, hailing from Lonehill, Johannesburg, made his senior debut at Matsatsantsa in 2022 just after his 17th birthday. Since then, Rapoo has earned 22 games despite a lengthy injury in the winter of 2024. 'Neo is one of the players that the scouts at Orlando Pirates have identified,' Kick Off reported. 'The club has already made inquiries about the availability of the player for next season,' a source added to the outlet. Rapoo also captained South Africa's U20 team at the Afcon championship in Morocco in May, including a crucial goal against Sierra Leone in Group A.
