Sars make serious statement with deadly dismantling of neighbours

Irish Examiner2 days ago
Premier SHC: Sarsfields 4-30 Erin's Own 3-14
As statements of intent go, they don't come much stronger than this. Sarsfields never had to raise a gallop as they brushed aside Erin's Own in Group 1 of the Co-op Superstores Cork PSHC. All but three points of their tally came from play, 11 players got their names on the scoresheet, and the talent left on the bench for the hour will ensure that nobody will be getting ahead of themselves in Riverstown.
It was a chastening evening for Erin's Own, but they gave themselves something to build on in the second half with Cian O'Callaghan bagging two goals and Conor Lenihan excellent all evening in scoring 0-5.
The game was over at the interval as two goals from James Sweeney and a contender for goal of the season from Killian Murphy left Sars 3-12 to 0-5 in front. Jack O'Connor fired in a fourth goal four minutes after the break and the Cork panelist was sublime throughout, hitting 1-8. Excellent work from Óran O'Regan and Lenihan set O'Callaghan up for his opening goal to make it 4-16 to 1-7 with twenty minutes to go. Robbie O'Flynn rifled home a twenty-one-yard free at the start of the final quarter but those majors never put a dent into the deficit as Sars were scoring at will from out the field with Daniel Hogan and Conor O'Sullivan particularly proficient.
O'Flynn set up O'Callaghan for goal number three for Erin's Own with seven to play, and one assumes that Johnny Crowley will be latching on to those goals when they reassemble during the week. The balmy evening made up for the lack of bite as the game petered out towards inevitability with O'Regan landing the games final score in injury time to leave eighteen between them.
The opening ten minutes promised us a contest. The sides were level three times, and Erin's Own were throwing themselves about. Conor Lenihan, Eoghan Murphy and Tom Dillon from a free split the posts for Erin's Own, while Jack O'Connor with two and Colm McCarthy were on target for Sars.

There were signs, however, that the Caherlag-based side were creaking. Twice Shane O'Regan got a sight of goal, and twice he was repelled with Dillon making an outstanding stop for effort number one and Riain O'Regan making a heroic block second time around. Still, points from the rampant O'Connor and Bryan Murphy pushed Sars two clear, and from there, their lead would only grow.
A combination of Dillon and O'Regan denied O'Regan for a third time and when Mossy O'Carroll gave Matt O'Riordan a sight at goal at the other end, there was a sense that this was the chance. Ben Graham saved well, however, and moments later Killian Murphy ran through the heart of the Erin's Own defence before cracking a bullet past Dillon. Fifteen minutes had been played, and Sars led by 1-5 to 0-3. They then won the rest of the half by 2-7 to 0-2 as Erin's Own simply had no answer for their pace, power and class.
James Sweeney banged in two goals, Cathal McCarthy strode forward two points, O'Connor and Colm McCarthy added two more to their tallies while Cian Darcy and Daniel Hogan also pointed. Lenihan and Cian Dunphy were on target for Erin's Own, but trailing by 3-12 to 0-5 at the interval, they faced into a long second half.
They did as well as they could from there, and for them, it's all about trying to raise their spirits for their final game against Fr O'Neill's, while Sars will be looking to secure the direct route to the final four when they play Glen Rovers.

‘Silky' - No surprise at the Irishman who makes Aston Villa legend's all-time XI

Aston Villa legend Tony Daley spent over nine years as a first-team regular at the Birmingham-based club - so he has seen plenty of teammates come and go. So when he was asked by Villa to name his all-time club XI, only the best made the cut. During his time at Aston Villa, Daley played with five Ireland internationals, but only one of those has made his dream team. Tony Cascarino, Steve Staunton, Ray Houghton and Andy Townsend all lined out in the claret and blue during his time there, but they didn't make the cut. However, Daley did have a place in his XI for Paul McGrath, who joined Villa from Manchester United in August 1989 and played there until 1996. During his time at Villa Park, McGrath won two League Cups, in 1993/94 and 1995/96, as well as a host of individual awards. Paul McGrath of Aston Villa (Image: Mark Leech/Offside via Getty Images) Discussing his pick, Daley told the Villa website: 'I had the pleasure of playing with McGrath for four years and he was an outstanding player. 'What I really love about him is we talk about his ability, how silky he was in defence, how he'd come out with the ball and how great he passes the ball, but when he had to put it in row Z, it went into row Z.' As for the rest of Daley's all-time XI, he went for World Cup winner Emi Martinez in goal, and Allan Evans alongside McGrath, describing the former Scotland international as 'so gentle off the field.' On it, however, Daley said: 'He'd kick his own granny, a completely different character – aggressive, wanting to win the ball. In training, he'd boot you up in the air and then pick you up.' The full-backs are Colin Gibson and Earl Barrett, with Gordon Cowans, David Platt and Stilyan Petrov in midfield. And up front is Dwight Yorke, flanked by Mark Walters and Tony Morley. Cork Hurling Championship talking points: Keepers on the scoresheet

LEAVING OFF THE HANDBRAKE After two rounds of the Cork Premier SHC, we haven't really seen anything to get the pulse racing. Newcestown's draw with Midleton would have raised plenty of eyebrows, but it was a game that was intriguing as opposed to being outstanding. Sarsfields' dismissal of Erin's Own hangs ominously over everything else that happened over the weekend, but Sars manager, Johnny Crowley, thinks that the pressure of getting out of the group is stifling teams. Johnny Crowley: 'We'll see exactly what we want to do where we want to go'

Co-op Superstores Cork PSHC, Group 1: Sarsfields 4-30 Erin's Own 3-15 They have plenty of reasons to be cheerful in Riverstown this morning. Two wins from two in Group 1 of the Co-op Superstores Cork PSHC, a points difference that's 32 in credit, all but ensuring their qualification for the knockout stages, and a stacked bench that they have not been forced to use, yet. They had far too much pace, power and class for their neighbours in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night in a game that was over long before Cathal McAllister called time on proceedings. Jack O'Connor was at his brilliant best in hitting 1-8, Killian Murphy was irrepressible in the middle of the field alongside Daniel Hogan, while corner-backs Cathal McCarthy and Conor O'Sullivan hit 0-4 between them. However, their manager, Johnny Crowley, wasn't for getting carried away afterwards. 'I suppose after winning the league we just set our stall out, and I know it might be a cliché, but we genuinely said we'd just go day to day. We looked at Fr O'Neill's, that was the only target we had, really, and we went at Fr O'Neill's and luckily, we got over that. After that was done, we focused on Erin's Own, and again, that was the only target we had. 'Now, it's kind of different because we're kind of qualified with our scoring average. We're in the quarter-final of a county now, and at the end of the day that's what you hope to achieve at the start of the championship. Our last game is the Glen, so we'll sit down Monday night, like we always do, and we'll review it, and we'll see exactly what we want to do where we want to go. But we're thrilled to be in the quarter-final of the county.' Though the sides were level three times inside the opening 10 minutes, with Conor Lenihan looking sharp for Erin's Own, there were signs that Sars were ready to cut loose. Thrice Shane O'Regan was denied a goal due to excellent goalkeeping from Tom Dillon and incredible defending from Riain O'Regan. However, once Killian Murphy finished a lung busting run with a rocket to the top corner after fifteen minutes, Sars just pulled clear. O'Connor was everywhere, James Sweeney banged in two goals while McCarthys Colm and Cathal buzzed with intent. All the Caherlag-based side had in response were points from Lenihan and Cian Dunphy, leaving them trailing by 3-12 to 0-5 at the break. That left Erin's Own in the dreaded 'win the second half at least territory', and to their credit, they made a good fist of it. Lenihan and Peter O'Shea had early scores after the break, but Jack O'Connor's goal four minutes into the second half plunged them into deeper trouble. Robbie O'Flynn found a bit of form by hitting 1-4, the goal coming from a free, Cian O'Callaghan cracked home two lovely goals but despite of all of their best efforts, they could not put a dent in the deficit. Hogan filled his boots with four second half points, his midfield partner, Murphy, added two points to his splendid goal while Bryan Murphy and Luke Elliott were rock solid at the back. It all leaves the neighbours with very different priorities when the final round of games comes around in three weeks. Sars will be looking to beat Glen Rovers to take the direct route to the final four as top seeds. Erin's Own will salvage what they can from the wreckage to use against Fr O'Neill's in what will be a must win game.
