Tom Aspinall finally reveals opponent for first defence of UFC title

Tom Aspinall will defend his UFC heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane.

Aspinall hasn't stepped into the ring since he defended his interim heavyweight belt against Curtis Blaydes last July in Manchester. After Jon Jones successfully defended the gold belt against Stipe Miocic last November, many speculated the American would face off against Aspinall in 2025.

However, 'Bones' didn't publicly commit to fighting the Brit, leading fans to demand that the American be stripped of his title. Last month, Jones announced his retirement from the sport and Aspinall was officially promoted to undisputed champion.

After months of anticipation, the 32 year old now has a fight and will take on Gane in the main event at UFC 321 on October 25 in Abu Dhabi - as confirmed by UFC boss Dana White.
It's been a rollercoaster few years for Gane since he suffered his first professional defeat to Francis Ngannou back in 2022. The Frenchman bounced back in his next fight against Tai Tuivasa before falling short in his second title fight against Jones, reports All Out Fighting.
The 35 year old then defeated Serghei Spivac in Paris back in September 2023. After taking a year-long break, the Frenchman returned to the cage last December, taking on Alexander Volkov.
Gane emerged victorious, but the bout was overshadowed by controversy after many felt the Russian had done enough to win. Gane will be seeking to become world champion in his third attempt at the undisputed title. Whilst there were doubts surrounding the French heavyweight's previous outing, the same certainly cannot be said for Aspinall - who has been on a remarkable run in the UFC.
Following a crushing injury in his initial bout with Blaydes, the Brit made his comeback after a year-long absence in 2023 and stopped Marcin Tybura. He subsequently captured the interim championship just months afterwards, defeating the formidable Sergei Pavlovich in barely over a minute.

It has been more than a year since supporters have witnessed the Brit compete and he will be eager to compensate for the time lost. Despite declaring his retirement, Jones disclosed merely weeks afterwards that he has rejoined the testing programme and may be eyeing the victor ahead of his possible comeback next year.
'Bones' voiced his ambition to fight on the White House card next July, but White has dismissed the notion. During Saturday evening's UFC 318 post-fight press conference, White appeared to dash Jones' ambitions to feature on the historic fight card. "I can't risk putting him (Jones) in big positions, in a big spot and have something go wrong," said White. Especially the White House card."
With Jones sidelined temporarily and Miocic having hung up his gloves, many are wondering if the UFC's heavyweight division has lost its spark, but Aspinall reckons the weight class remains as thrilling as ever. Speaking to All Out Fighting last month, he declared: "Every fight is different, so even if I have beaten somebody before, it is still exciting for me to fight in. It's heavyweight MMA, so, even though it might seem a bit stagnant, as soon as the guys get active again, it will be good!".
White's Tuesday evening revelation about Aspinall wasn't the only bombshell the UFC chief dropped. The American also confirmed that Merab Dvalishvili will square off against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320 on 4 October in Las Vegas. Additionally on the card, Alex Pereira will attempt to reclaim his light-heavyweight crown from Magomed Ankalaev, whilst a tantalising bout at 205lbs pits Khalil Rountree against Jiri Prochazka at the same event.
When is Tom Aspinall vs Ciryl Gane?
Aspinall's encounter with Gane is scheduled for October 25 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The duo's battle will top the UFC 321 pay-per-view bill.
Alexander Volkov and Jailton Almeida will also feature at the event - apparently vying for the top heavyweight challenger position. A light-heavyweight clash between Aleksandar Rakic and Azamat Murzakanov has been confirmed, with Mitch Raposo set to face off against Azat Maksum.
The remainder of the card will be revealed soon, with whispers suggesting that Islam Makhachev's super-fight with Jack Della Maddalena might be on the cards. Official start times for the fights will be announced nearer the time, but it's expected that the main event will kick off around 10pm BST.

‘What was the ref doing' – Fans fear UFC star could lose his EYE after horror swelling sees fight called off

UFC fans have been left fearing Mohammad Yahya could lose his EYE after suffering a gruesome injury. Yahya, 31, was in prelims action at the Etihad Arena for UFC Abu Dhabi against Steven Nguyen. 3 3 3 However, Yahya ended up walking away from the featherweight clash with a loss and a badly busted eye. Nguyen, a product of Dana White 's Contender Series, scored six knockdowns against the United Arab Emirates fighter - a new UFC record for the most knockdowns in a single fight. The ferocity of the 32-year-old left Yahya with no chance, though his determination to carry on meant he was ultimately a glutton for punishment. Referee Jason Herzog waved off the fight in the second round to award a TKO victory to Nguyen as doctors stepped in to treat the injuries. But that was not before Yahya was left with a badly swollen left eye. And quite a few UFC fans were left baffled by how the decision took so long to be reached. Reacting to the brutal bout on social media, one fan said: "What was the ref doing.. That was an absolute beatdown." A second said: "Should have been stopped in the first. No way this nearly went into the third." A third added: "Herzog needs to be suspended or fired, especially if he loses that eye." Another said: "Something bad could have happened and I hope he won't lose the eye. Why didn't they stop the fight after the first knock?" The fight marked Nguyen's first win in the UFC since signing a contract in 2023, having lost his debut fight in March 2024 to Youssef Zalal.

UFC fighter left completely disfigured by gruesome injuries as fans call for referee to be fired over brutal bout

UFC fighter Steven Nguyen left his opponent Mohammad Yahya with gruesome injuries as he claimed a historic victory at UFC Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The two featherweights clashed in a prelim battle at the Etihad Arena but it was Nguyen, a product of Dana White 's Contender Series, who etched himself into octagon history. The 32-year-old knocked down his rival six times, smashing the record for total number of knockdowns in a single fight in the championship's history. The previous record of five was shared by Jeremy Stephens (who defeated Gilbert Melendez in 2017) and Forrest Petz (who defeated Sammy Morgan in 2006). However, shockingly Yahya managed to bounce back from every single one - at a cost. Yahya, who was fighting in front of a home crowd in the UAE, was left disfigured by the hammering at the hands of Nguyen. In addition to the bloodied cuts littering his face, the Emirati fighter also suffered a hematoma - a closed wound where blood collects outside of vessels - which caused his left eye to swell, forcing it shut. Thankfully for him, referee Jason Herzog and doctors ultimately put an end to his pain, handing the victory to Nguyen by doctor's stoppage in the second round. However, some MMA fans felt the stoppage didn't come soon enough as they slammed Herzog for not intervening. Herzog needs to be fired that's not a beating that's a life changing injury,' one fan account posted on social media. '[...] Hopefully yahya gets better and Jason gets f****n fired.' 'Damn did the ref bet decision or something this is crazy,' another questioned. 'Jason Herzog watching Steven Nguyen drop Yahya 6 times in Round 1 and still not stopping the fight,' wrote a third alongside of a GIF of Dolph Lundgren's character Ivan Drogo saying, 'If he dies, he dies,' from the film, 'Rocky IV'. 'Herzog is in a 'if he dies he dies' mood,' another echoed, also referencing the famous movie quote. Meanwhile, one fan claimed that 'the referee should be fined and jailed' as they replied to a photo of Yahya's gruesome injury. Yahya, who staggeringly managed a knockdown of his own in the round, had stumbled to the corner after round one, having to be dragged to his stool by his cornerman. As he sat in his corner the horrific swelling was evident, forcing Herzog and medics to step in. Saturday's triumph marked Nguyen's first victory in the UFC after signing a contract with the company in 2023. He lost his debut in his lone 2024 appearance. 'I've been working so hard for this moment. It's finally here,' Nguyen said afterwards. 'The fight's not over until it's over. I came into UFC 0-1 and I come back and I wanted that finish. Here we are now.'
