Christopher Scholtes, 37, is accused of leaving his daughter Parker inside a car in 190°F (87.7°C) heat outside their home in Marana, Arizona, in July 2023, as he didn't want to disturb her sleep. The pair had just returned from a shopping trip.
According to investigators, Scholtes left the vehicle running with the air-conditioning on, but the car eventually shut off while he became distracted playing video games on his Playstation.
Prosecutors allege Parker remained in the car for over three hours. His wife, who works as a doctor, came home to find a horrifying discovery - their daughter's lifeless body.

Despite facing a possible death sentence and rejecting a plea deal that would have reduced the charge to second-degree murder, Scholtes was granted a temporary change in bail conditions, allowing him to travel to Maui, Hawaii from May 1-9 with his wife, Dr. Erika Scholtes, and their two surviving daughters.
News of the court order shows the couple's marriage has remained intact despite a horrific tragedy prosecutors say was homicide.
The court order, issued by Judge Kimberly Ortiz over objections from prosecutors, stipulates that Scholtes must stay in contact with pretrial services and have no unsupervised contact with children during the trip.
The Scholtes family's continued public togetherness and support has drawn scrutiny. Erika, an anesthesiologist at the hospital where Parker was pronounced dead, has stood by her husband, describing the incident as a tragic mistake. During a hearing, she defended him, stating, 'This doesn't represent him.'
CCTV footage reportedly contradicted Scholtes' initial claim that Parker was alone in the car for less than an hour, showing she was left in direct sunlight for more than three hours. His older daughters, aged 5 and 9 at the time, told investigators he often left all three children unattended in the car.
Text messages revealed by prosecutors show Erika scolding her husband after the incident, writing, "I told you to stop leaving them in the car... we've lost her, she was perfect." Scholtes responded, "Babe, I'm sorry! How could I do this? I killed our baby, this can't be real."
Scholtes' trial, initially scheduled for September 15, has been postponed to October. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Confused female Labrador and adorable puppy are found dumped on street by driver
A pair of neglected Labradors were found dumped on the side of the road near a school in Colorado. Police in Parker, outside Denver, described the dogs as an adult female and a six-month-old puppy. The adorable dogs were discovered abandoned near the parking lot of Pioneer Elementary School on Wednesday morning. Neither of the dogs are microchipped and they both showed signs of neglect, according to police. 'All we have at this time is that a white pick-up [truck] with a topper dropped these two dogs off and then drove away,' the Parker Police Department said. 'The driver was described as a white male, middle-aged, of average build.' The dogs are currently at a shelter. Police asked for help in locating the driver. Those who saw the police statement were appalled by the news. 'This is horrific. So glad they're safe,' one commenter wrote. 'Oh this is heartbreaking! Whoever adopts these sweet angels, please keep them together. They need each other!' another said. Independent MP Rupert Lowe has admitted mistaking a charity rowing crew for 'illegal migrants'. Mr Lowe, who was elected as a Reform UK MP but now sits as an Independent in Great Yarmouth, had posted a picture on social media on Thursday night showing a boat near some wind turbines off the Norfolk coast. The Coastguard contacted the crew to confirm their identity and Mr Lowe has since promised to donate £1,000 to their charity after admitting his mistake. The MP posted on social media on Friday morning: 'Good news. False alarm! The unknown vessel was charity rowers, thank goodness. 'As a well done to the crew, I'll donate £1,000 to their charity – raising money for MND. 'Keep going, and watch out for any real illegal migrants! 'We received a huge number of urgent complaints from constituents – I make no apologies over being vigilant for my constituents. It is a national crisis. 'No mass deportations for the charity rowers, but we definitely need it for the illegal migrants!' Mr Lowe had originally posted on social media on Thursday night: 'Dinghies coming into Great Yarmouth, RIGHT NOW. 'Authorities alerted, and I am urgently chasing. If these are illegal migrants, I will be using every tool at my disposal to ensure these individuals are deported.' But the vessel pictured was in fact an ocean rowing boat crewed by ROW4MND, a team of four who are attempting to row from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND). The crew – Matthew Parker, Mike Bates, Aaron Kneebone and Liz Wardley – said they had been contacted by the Coastguard and asked if they could see a dinghy nearby. Mr Bates, a former Royal Marine and British record holder for rowing across the Atlantic solo, told the PA news agency it soon became clear the Coastguard was asking about his own boat. 'I looked to my right and there was maybe a dozen individuals stood on the shoreline staring at us,' he said. After satisfying the Coastguard that their boat was not carrying migrants, they continued, but several hours later were contacted again by the Coastguard because the police had 'asked if they could send a lifeboat out to check who we were'. The quartet set off from Land's End on July 25 and initially headed north into the Irish Sea before bad weather forced them to stop at Milford Haven in Wales. They then decided to return to Land's End and start again, this time heading in the other direction, which Mr Bates said had been 'about us showing resolve and resilience and hope'. The journey is the first of four challenges over four years, with the group aiming to row from John O'Groats to Land's End next year, from California to Hawaii in 2027 and New York to London in 2028, with a target of raising £57 million for MND research. So far, they have raised £107,515 for the charity. Mr Bates said: 'We're rowing for hope, we're rowing to find a cure, and hopefully we'll raise £57 million – we certainly will if MPs keep talking about us. Maybe Rupert will give us a donation.'
