Sex attacker tried to rape woman on Glasgow street
Stephen Stewart, 59, was spotted on top of the victim by a shocked passer-by as she headed to work in Glasgow city centre early on October 10, 2023.
She immediately dialled 999 - officers soon arrived to find the younger woman still on the ground and Stewart sitting next to her.
He later lied: "It is my pal's bird - she asked me to sleep with her."
Stewart has now been jailed for four years after he admitted to an attempted rape charge.
It emerged at the hearing at the High Court in Glasgow today that he already had 115 previous convictions stretching back to the early 1980s when he was a teenager. None were for sexual offences.
Stewart had also been freed early from another prison term when he struck.
Prosecutor David McDonald told how the woman had got chatting to Stewart and two other men as she looked for directions.

She had never met any of them before.
Stewart and the woman later briefly went to where he was staying at the time before heading towards a pub.
They eventually ended up at the Clyde Walkway area. Both took drink and drugs.
The court heard the woman's next memory was being back where she lived the next afternoon.
But, that morning, Stewart had taken advantage of the intoxicated victim.
A passing cyclist at the Clyde Walkway had wrongly believed there was "some kind of consensual sexual activity" happening.
Mr McDonald: "The woman remained lying on the ground and the witness noted no movement or response from her."
A few minutes later, another woman walked past and spotted Stewart with his trousers down.

She thought he was "attempting to have sex" with the victim "while she was unconscious" and "lifeless".
Police arrived and they got the woman up into a seated position, but she remained "unstable".
During the probe into the sex attack, she later told officers: "I would not have gone near him with a barge pole."
Billy Lavelle, defending, said Stewart had little memory of the incident, but accepted he had done what he had pleaded guilty to.
Lord Colbeck cut the jail-term from four and a half years due to the plea.
Stewart will also be supervised for a further three years on his release.
The judge: "You have received numerous custodial sentences before and were released early from the last of those when you committed this crime.
"This was opportunistic having been committed against a woman you had only met the previous day."
Stewart was also put on the sex offenders list indefinitely.

Conn was yesterday convicted of raping two youngsters and sexually assaulting two other boys at the High Court in Glasgow. This brings the total number of the pervert's confirmed victims to seven. Conn committed the crimes at different locations across Glasgow and Ayrshire. This included addresses in Beith, Ardrossan and Saltcoats, as well as in his vehicle while it was parked near Ibrox stadium. The court heard that Conn repeatedly abused one youngster, who was aged between 14 and 15 at the time. Another young boy was targeted in 2004 and 2005 at a school in Ayrshire. He was found guilty of indecently assaulting the boy on several occasions when he was between 15 and 19 years of age. "The three complainers in this case, thereafter, came forward." Details of his previous conviction were revealed to the court by prosecutor Eric Robertson after the verdicts were announced. He was found guilty at the High Court in Paisley in 2022 after a jury unanimously convicted him of one charge of rape and four of sexual assault. During his first trial, the court heard he earned their trust and had sexual conversations with them before the attacks. The jury was told he was guilty of 'the grooming and manipulation and sexual abuse of teenage boys', and would often give victims money as well as cigarettes. His first victim, now in his 40s, previously told how he blamed himself for the abuse and said he had planned to die without ever revealing what had happened. He said he 'buried' what happened to him and 'withdrew' into his 'shell', adding: 'I had made peace with myself and thought I'd take it to my grave with me. 'I put it in a wee box at the back of my head but there's barely been a day gone by where I've not thought about it.' His second victim tried to kill himself within seconds of being forced on to a couch and abused in Conn's home. He was later unable to hold down a job because of mental health problems and struggles to go to the toilet due to the abuse. And his third victim, now in his 20s, was discharged from the Armed Forces and spent time in a mental hospital after revealing what had happened to him. After the first trial, Judge Andrew Cubie told him at the High Court in Glasgow: 'You were convicted of charges which was deliberate, calculated sexual abuse of three young men. 'Their evidence was powerful about their shame, experiences and effect it had on them. 'The offences were motivated by your own sexual appetite and sexual satisfaction. 'You express no remorse, understanding or empathy for the wrongdoing you have done or harm you have caused. 'You were able to carry on your own life while the victims suffered the consequences of your actions and you avoided justice into your seventies. 'Society has a repugnance to such crimes and the court must reflect that.'

A serial pervert football coach has been found guilty of raping a youngster and sexually assaulting two other boys - taking his total number of confirmed victims to seven. Russell Conn coached football teams for over 26 years and worked as a carer in a boys' residential school, a bus driver, a delivery driver and a painter and decorator. But he was secretly a serial sex offender who targeted teens when they were alone. He abused boys at locations across Scotland over a 26-year period, carrying out the sexual assaults in his work vans and in properties, and abusing one boy so badly he tried to kill himself. He was convicted of abusing three more boys at the High Court in Glasgow last week, having previously been convicted of child sex offences in 2022. His latest trial heard he repeatedly abused a boy when the youngster was aged 14 and 15. The abuse took place in Conn's vehicle, while it was parked near Ibrox Stadium. Conn worked at the residential school and the youngster, who was aged 15 and 16, was a resident at the time. Conn indecently assaulted him on a number of occasions. He repeatedly sexually assaulted another boy and raped him between 2013 and 2018 within vehicles and at addresses in Glasgow and across Ayrshire. The boy was aged between 15 and 19 at the time. And he raped the same boy when he was in his 20s, after forcing his way into his home in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, clamping his hand over his mouth and restraining him. Conn is due to be sentenced for the offences next month. His address was listed on court papers as Low Moss Prison, in Bishopbriggs, where he is serving the sentence was was given in his previous case. In 2022 he was jailed for nine years after being found guilty at the High Court in Paisley, Renfrewshire. The court was told he repeatedly targeted four teenagers. The court heard Conn, who was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life over that case, "groomed and abused boy after boy after boy after boy", leaving them "deeply damaged".. He was initially arrested and charged in 2010 - over abuse carried out on boys between 1995 and 2014 - after another teen reported abuse to police. His first trial heard Conn, of Stevenston, Ayrshire, knew one boy, who lived in a home, through the care system and tried to sexually assault him in Livingston after giving him £10 and a 10 pack of cigarettes. The boy said the incident happened on a bus which Conn had driven there. Conn admitted meeting the boy but denied he'd done anything wrong. He earned the trust of his victims and had sexual conversations with them before abusing them and often gave his victims money and cigarettes. The court heard he was guilty of "the grooming and manipulation and sexual abuse of teenage boys". His first victim said he blamed himself for the abuse and said he had planned to die without ever revealing what had happened. Glasgow man caught with £1m of cocaine in secret hideaway
Michael O'Lone was stopped on the M74 near junction 10 at Lesmahagow, in Lanarkshire, in April 2024. The 34-year-old had previously been freed from a jail-term for growing cannabis when he was snared again. O'Lone has now been locked up once more after he pleaded guilty at the High Court in Glasgow to a charge of being concerned in the supply of cocaine. Prosecutor Eilidh Robertson told how O'Lone was the only person in the van when it was halted. She then explained: "The vehicle was searched. A total of 10 blocks of powder in bags were recovered from a compartment under the driver's seat which could be operated with hydraulics." A sensor button to open the hideaway was seized. O'Lone's DNA was also found in that area of the van. Police further discovered an iPhone - messages linked O'Lone to the drug trafficking including him discussing the collection of "paper" - slang for money - with an associate. There was also a photo of white powder being weighed on scales. Miss Roberston said the cocaine had a purity as high as 82% with a potential street value of £1,004,000. Thomas Ross KC, defending, stated O'Lone, of the city's Castlemilk, was released from his last sentence in July 2022. He had been jailed for 14 months for being involved in the production of cannabis. Mr Ross: "As far as this (latest) offence is concerned, there is very little to offer other than the value of the cocaine is high, but he would not have benefitted directly from the sale of drugs." O'Lone had got involved to help repay a debt owed by him. The KC stated he was a man "capable of very much better". Lord Cubie cut the jail-term from eight years due to the plea. The judge said O'Lone "knew fine well" what he was getting involved in, stating drugs "corrode, damage and destroy" lives. Referring to O'Lone previous prison stint, Lord Cube told him: "You had your second chance and chose to deal with it with this most serious offending."
