In a similar case in Karnataka, a 70-year-old man from Benakanahalli village in Belagavi district, who tested positive for COVID-19, passed away at a hospital, a senior health official confirmed.Harsh Gupta, Principal Secretary of Karnataka's Health and Family Welfare department, verified the death. The patient, who had age-related health issues, was admitted to Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital for treatment. After testing positive for COVID-19 in the morning, he was immediately moved to the COVID ward and died late Wednesday night.Earlier, on May 17, an 84-year-old man with serious comorbidities died at a private hospital in Whitefield, Bengaluru; his COVID-19 test results came back positive posthumously.As of May 28, Karnataka reported 126 active COVID-19 cases, with 40 new infections recorded that day, according to the health department bulletin. Health officials confirmed that all district and tertiary hospitals across Karnataka are equipped and prepared to manage COVID-19 cases.As of May 29, 2025, India has reported a total of 1,010 active COVID-19 cases, marking a significant increase from 257 cases on May 19. The surge is attributed to the emergence of new variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which have been identified in states such as Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.In response to the uptick in cases, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has urged the public to adhere to preventive measures, including wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining hand hygiene, and staying updated with vaccinations. Responding to questions from reporters about the spread of Covid-19, Soumya Swaminathan said, "There are possibilities of Covid-19 surge every six to eight months. The virus is here to stay with us, just like the common cold. People should be careful and follow Covid-19 guidelines." Stating that the virus spreading among people is likely to cause mild effects, Soumya Swaminathan said, "Elders and those with underlying health conditions need to be more careful, however." On Covid vaccination , Soumya Swaminathan said the vaccines were safe and are less likely to cause side effects any more. "Those who had contracted Covid earlier, may have reactions to comorbidities," she added. Earlier, MSSRF began an initiative for five villages in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts. Head of the centre, S Velvizhi stated that training and development activities would be conducted for 1,500 families in the next three years. Addressing MSSRF's upcoming projects, Soumya Swaminathan said, "We are starting new research on the impact of prolonged heat and humidity on the health of fisherfolk in coastal districts." She added that MSSRF is developing an early warning tool integrated with artificial intelligence for fisherfolk to warn them about the health impact. She further stated that fisherfolk have a high possibility of high blood pressure and diabetes due to exposure to salty wind and consumption of salty food, according to surveys. "People should have a check-up once a year and keep their blood pressure under control," she said.

MUMBAI: Four fatalities were added Tuesday to the list of Covid-19 patients who have died in the state since cases began emerging in May, taking the toll to 14. Four new cases were reported from from Nashik city, three from Pune district, 24 from Pune city, three from Pimpri-Chinchwad, two from Kolhapur, one from Sangli district, four from Sangli, and two from Nagpur. Mumbai's total number of Covid-19 cases since May now stands at 509. There had also been three deaths in the city, all involving patients with severe comorbidities. Doctors told TOI that most patients, even those with comorbidities, are recovering. The state health department on Monday asked civic bodies to conduct mock drills of all the pressure swing absorption oxygen plants.

CHENNAI: A 69-year-old woman with comorbidities, who tested positive for Covid-19, died at a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday. The deceased was a resident of Sowcarpet, and was suffering from cervical cancer. She was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital at Chetpet. Sources said she also had type 2 diabetes mellitus and Parkinson's disease. This is the third death of a Covid positive person in the state, after the recent spike in the number of cases. According to the Union Health Ministry's data, the state has 215 active cases as on Tuesday, and 26 people tested positive in the last 24 hours. The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Tamil Nadu had recently issued instructions to all the district health officers, city health officers, and municipal health officers to step up disease surveillance and encourage people to wear face masks in crowded places tor reduce respiratory transmission. Health minister Ma Subramanian also requested people not to panic as no new variant is in circulation in the state.
