Covid positive 69-year-old woman with comorbidities dies in Chennai
CHENNAI: A 69-year-old woman with comorbidities, who tested positive for Covid-19, died at a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday. The deceased was a resident of Sowcarpet, and was suffering from cervical cancer.
She was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital at Chetpet. Sources said she also had type 2 diabetes mellitus and Parkinson's disease. This is the third death of a Covid positive person in the state, after the recent spike in the number of cases.
According to the Union Health Ministry's data, the state has 215 active cases as on Tuesday, and 26 people tested positive in the last 24 hours. The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Tamil Nadu had recently issued instructions to all the district health officers, city health officers, and municipal health officers to step up disease surveillance and encourage people to wear face masks in crowded places tor reduce respiratory transmission. Health minister Ma Subramanian also requested people not to panic as no new variant is in circulation in the state.

Local BJP leader and social activist Shashi Shankar Tiwari said, "It is disheartening to see the hospital in such a state, especially as we approach the monsoon and potential resurgence of infections. The sanitation standards are abysmal—it feels like we are back in the COVID era. The hospital waiting area gives a grim picture of neglect and administrative apathy. " "Hospitals must lead by example when it comes to hygiene. What message are we sending when one of our top medical institutes is drowning in garbage?" said a health rights activist. GMCH-32 medical superintendent Dr Gurvinder Singh acknowledged the issue and assured prompt action. "I will get the area checked and ensure that the garbage is cleaned immediately. We will also pull up the sanitation staff for negligence," he said. Patients visiting the hospital are being forced to make payments in cash at billing counters, leading to inconvenience and allegations of petty overcharging due to unavailability of change. According to complaints, the staff at payment windows are not accepting card-based transactions and insist on cash payments. Several patients have reported being made to run around in search of change, with some even giving up small excess amounts at the counters. A patient visiting the ENT department recounted his ordeal. "The payment clerks made me run for around 20 minutes arranging for change to make a payment. Eventually, I managed to get change from a security guard. I also witnessed some patients ahead of me in line forgoing Rs 10 or Rs 20 just because they didn't have exact change and the staff refused to return the difference," he said. The absence of Point of Sale (PoS) machines at payment windows has raised eyebrows, with some patients questioning whether the situation is being deliberately misused. "When the hospital can adopt digital methods in recordkeeping and diagnostics, why can't basic payment systems be digitised?" questioned a relative of a patient in the medicine OPD. GMCH-32 Medical Superintendent Dr. Gurvinder Singh said, "This cannot be considered a routine practice. It is possible that PoS machines were not working due to technical issues or server problems. We will have to check the situation and get back with appropriate measures."

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Amid the Opposition's allegations on Census, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday clarified that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on many occasions, has assured that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of Southern states will be taken care of. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, in a post on X, said, 'Budget has never been a constraint for Census as fund is always ensured by the Govt. HM Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time.' Further, it emphasised that all the preparations were made to conduct the Census in 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed. 'Census 2021 was to be conducted, and all preparations for the Census were completed. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time,' the post stated. 'COVID disrupted all sectors, including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting the Census. Conducting the Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely,' the MHA Spokesperson stated on X. It added that the countries that conducted the Census immediately after COVID-19 faced issues with the quality and coverage of Census data. 'The Government has decided to commence the process of census forthwith which will complete on 01 March, 2027, the reference date for Census,' the post stated. On Wednesday, the central government announced that the Population Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases and will also include the enumeration of castes. According to the MHA statement, the reference date for the 'Population Census-2027 will be 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country.' However, for the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026. After this, the DMK alleged that the census would be held after the proposed delimitation and that there was a plan to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first Census after 2026. 'The BJP has now delayed the Census to 2027, making their plan clear to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation. I had warned about this. It is now unfolding,' he said in a post on X. He also hit out at AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami. 'By siding with the BJP, Palaniswami is not just silent but complicit in this betrayal. It's now clear that he has surrendered to Delhi's domination. The people of Tamil Nadu are united as one in their demand for a Fair Delimitation. We need clear answers from the Union Government,' he said. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X that there is really no reason to delay the Census, which was due in 2021, for another twenty-three months. Officials who attended the meeting said Modi stressed on making infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and police stations, 'world class'. 'The PM said people backed him during demonetisation, Covid-19 pandemic and gave up benefits under the subsidised LPG connection scheme, indicating citizens appreciate good work. He said programmes and projects must be outcome oriented and of high quality,' a source said. Modi also stressed on the need to pay attention to public grievances and addressing them.
