Most intense fighting for years rocks Libyan capital
Reuters — The most intense clashes for years rocked Tripoli for a second night and continued into Wednesday morning, witnesses in the Libyan capital said, after Monday's killing of a major militia leader set off fighting between rival factions.
The United Nations Libya mission UNSMIL said it was 'deeply alarmed by the escalating violence in densely populated neighborhoods of Tripoli' and urgently called for a ceasefire.
The latest unrest in Libya's capital could consolidate the power of Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, prime minister of the divided country's Government of National Unity (GNU) and an ally of Turkey.
Libya has had little stability since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising ousted longtime autocrat Muammar Gaddafi and the country split in 2014 between rival eastern and western factions, though an outbreak of major warfare paused with a truce in 2020.
A major energy exporter, Libya is also an important way station for migrants heading to Europe and its conflict has drawn in foreign powers including Turkey, Russia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Its main oil facilities are located in southern and eastern Libya, far from the current fighting in Triopli.
While eastern Libya has been dominated for a decade by commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), control in Tripoli and western Libya has been splintered among numerous armed factions.
Dbeibah on Tuesday ordered the dismantling of what he called irregular armed groups.
That announcement followed Monday's killing of major militia chief Abdulghani Kikli, widely known as Ghaniwa, and the sudden defeat of his Stabilization Support Apparatus (SSA) group by factions aligned with Dbeibah.
The seizure of SSA territory in Libya by the Dbeibah-allied factions, the 444 and 111 Brigades, indicated a major concentration of power in the fragmented capital, leaving the Special Deterrence Force (Rada) as the last big faction not closely tied to the prime minister.

Egypt welcomes ILO resolution granting observer status to Palestine
Egyptian and Palestinian flags CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Egypt's Ministry of Labor has welcomed the decision by the General Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to grant the State of Palestine observer status within the organization. The resolution was overwhelmingly adopted, with 386 votes in favor, 15 against, and 42 abstentions, marking a significant step forward for Palestinian representation in international labor affairs. Egyptian Minister of Labor Mohammad Jubran extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Palestinian delegation—comprising representatives of the government, employers, and workers—on this historic milestone. He praised the ILO's decision to grant Palestine "non-member observer state" status, describing it as a just and overdue recognition. The resolution was adopted during a plenary session on Friday, June 6, as part of the 113th Session of the International Labor Conference, held in Geneva from June 2 to 13, 2025. Minister Jubran delivered Egypt's official statement in support of the resolution during the plenary session on Thursday at the United Nations Palace. In his remarks, he welcomed the adoption of what he described as a 'historic resolution,' noting its alignment with the United Nations General Assembly resolution of May 10, 2024. That resolution affirmed Palestine's eligibility for full UN membership under Article 4 of the UN Charter and called for its admission to the United Nations and its specialized agencies. The ILO's 352nd Governing Body session subsequently adopted a resolution to amend Palestine's status, enabling its delegation to participate more fully in the organization's meetings and activities. Minister Jubran stated: 'This resolution embodies a historical truth and a recognition of the rights of a people who have suffered for more than seven decades under foreign occupation, blockade, oppression, and the killing of women and children.

Egypt continues inspection tours of sacrificial animal markets during Eid Al-Adha

REUTERS/Mohamed Abd El Ghany CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Inspection committees assigned by Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation continued their field visits on Saturday to markets selling sacrificial animals and meat, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure safety and raise public awareness during Eid Al-Adha celebrations. In a statement, the Ministry said that the inspections aim to verify the health of animals being sold for sacrifice and to educate citizens on selecting appropriate livestock. Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, has been personally monitoring the activities of the committees, which are operated by the Ministry's Animal and Poultry Wealth Development Sector in coordination with the General Authority for Veterinary Services. Minister Farouk stressed the importance of continuous oversight of all animal markets and stalls to guarantee the safety and well-being of sacrificial animals throughout the holiday. He also emphasized the availability of technical guidance to help citizens make informed choices when purchasing animals for sacrifice. The Minister further highlighted the need to reduce random slaughtering in public streets, both to preserve environmental cleanliness and to ensure the safety and quality of the meat. He urged citizens to utilize the nearest government-operated slaughterhouses, which are offering free slaughter services throughout the Eid holiday. These facilities also conduct veterinary checks and visual inspections of livestock before slaughter. On the first day of Eid Al-Adha, a time when hundreds of thousands of Egyptians perform the ritual slaughter of livestock, Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber issued a warning against slaughtering animals in public streets and leaving behind waste. He confirmed that environmental violation reports would be filed against offenders, with fines reaching up to EGP 10,000 (approximately USD 202) for those who leave animal waste or blood in public areas. The Governor also announced that all government slaughterhouses in Cairo will remain open around the clock during the holiday to accommodate citizens' sacrificial animals free of charge.

UN Member States to Adopt Voluntary Political Declaration to Solve Marine Crisis
Rana Atef More than 2,000 scientists and advocates from at least 100 countries participated in the One Ocean Science Congress, dedicated to the increasing marine crisis. 'The ocean is suffering at the cause of humanity,' said the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who spoke at the opening ceremony on Tuesday. She added, 'Either we save our oceans or the entire race will pay.' Rising sea temperatures due to global warming, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and offshore oil and gas developments are some of the threats plaguing the ocean. 'Sound research shows global human health is intrinsically linked to a healthy ocean,' said Peter Thomson, the United Nations secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean. The ocean greatly contributes to producing more than half of the oxygen humans breathe, in addition to balancing Earth temperatures by absorbing excess heat and carbon dioxide. 3 billion people depend on the ocean for their daily activities, according to the United Nations. But, at the congress's opening ceremony, Thomson said, 'the ocean's health is currently, measurably in decline.' Now is the time to chart a new future for the ocean, he said. 'Faith has been placed upon this congress to serve as the scientific pillar of the U.N. Ocean Conference,' said Thomson. He added: 'We're expecting that the scientifically compiled conclusions of this congress will inform the leaders and the representatives of governments and civil society who will be attending the conference.' By the end of the oceans summit, U.N. member states intend to adopt a voluntary political declaration that will promote the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources called 'Our Ocean, Our Future: United for Urgent Action.' read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
