Phillies RHP Aaron Nola sidelined 2 more weeks with rib injury

Rather than leaning on favorites like Paul Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jay Croucher and Drew Dinsick share why bettors should consider targeting upside picks such as MacKenzie Gore. PHILADELPHIA — Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola suffered another setback in his return to pitch when an MRI showed he has an injury in his right ribcage and will be shut down for two weeks. Nola had already been out since early May with a sprained right ankle that was progressing more slowly than expected. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto and that wiped out a planned session against live batters. Nola underwent testing this week and had what the Phillies called a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs that Nola was unsure how the injury may have happened. Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts. Nola, who signed a $172 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2024 season, injured his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills when the Phillies played the Rays at Steinbrenner Field. Nola is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies. Thomson said slugger Bryce Harper was starting to feel better as he recovers from right wrist inflammation that last Friday landed him on the 10-day injured list. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider.

Texas WCWS final win sets ESPN record with most-watched College softball game ever

Texas WCWS final win sets ESPN record with most-watched College softball game ever ESPN reported that the decisive Game 3 of the championship series averaged 2.4 million viewers and peaked at 2.7 million, making it the most-watched NCAA softball game ever. The Texas Longhorns made history at the 2025 Women's College World Series, capturing their first-ever national championship and setting new television viewership records across all three games of the finals. ESPN reported that the decisive Game 3 of the championship series averaged 2.4 million viewers and peaked at 2.7 million, making it the most-watched NCAA softball game ever. Games 1 and 2 also broke records, each averaging 2.1 million viewers—the highest ever for the opening two games of a WCWS final. Game 1 peaked at 2.8 million viewers, while Game 2 reached a peak of 2.6 million. The all-Texas matchup between the Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders marked the first time since 2004 that both championship participants hailed from the same state, reviving the storied rivalry from their Big 12 days. The series spotlighted a marquee pitching showdown between Texas ace Teagan Kavan and Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady. Kavan, who entered the finals with a perfect 3-0 record against Canady, extended her dominance to 5-0 after two more victories in the championship series. Fans were treated to a dramatic three-game set. Game 1 delivered a classic pitchers' duel, featuring a controversial obstruction call and a bizarre game-winning hit for Texas in the sixth inning. The Red Raiders bounced back in Game 2, capitalizing on Texas errors to force a decisive Game 3. In the winner-take-all finale, the Longhorns erupted for five runs in the first inning, forcing Canady out of the game. A grand slam sealed Texas' commanding victory and their first national title in program history.

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Announces Shohei Ohtani News Before Padres Game

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Announces Shohei Ohtani News Before Padres Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been hammered by injuries to their pitching staff. Among others, starting pitchers Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki are on the injured list. Advertisement Last week, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told Jon Heyman of the New York Post that the team is not currently planning to deal for a pitcher ahead of the MLB trade deadline. One of the biggest reasons for taking this approach is the looming return to pitching for two-way star Shohei Ohtani. Undergoing right elbow surgery in 2023, Ohtani has not pitched in a game since he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17).Kirby Lee-Imagn Images For his MLB career, Ohtani has posted a 3.01 ERA with 608 strikeouts in 481.2 innings as a pitcher. If he can come anywhere close to this production, Los Angeles will have itself another frontline starter who would supplant the need for a trade deadline move. Advertisement On Tuesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced some more encouraging news, revealing there is a non-zero chance Ohtani pitches before the All-Star break. "Dave Roberts said the chances are 'north of zero' that Shohei Ohtani could be back sooner than the post-All-Star break timeline originally anticipate," Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic wrote on X. "Both Roberts and Mark Prior noted how good Ohtani looked over his three simulated innings today." This comes after Gomes told Heyman of Ohtani, "There's no reason to think he's not coming back." Now, it seems that return could be even closer than initially anticipated. This would be a huge boost for Los Angeles as it attempts to navigate significant injury misfortune, most notably to the pitching staff.
