Pope Francis to be discharged from hospital tomorrow
Pope Francis is to be released from hospital tomorrow after being treated for double pneumonia for the last five weeks.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been receiving treatment at Gemelli Hospital in Rome since 14 February for a severe respiratory infection.
The Vatican previously said he would appear from the window of his hospital room on Sunday to offer a blessing.
A photo released by the Vatican last week showed the leader of the Catholic church celebrating Sunday mass in a hospital chapel.
He is seen wearing a purple stole while sitting in a wheelchair in front of an altar.
The Vatican said in a statement that Pope Francis wanted to come to the hospital window around noon (11am UK time) on Sunday to give a greeting and blessing.

One senior cardinal said on Friday it could take time for the Pope to "relearn to speak" after using oxygen during his hospital stay.
"The pope is doing very well, but high-flow oxygen dries everything out," said Cardinal Victor Fernandez, the Vatican's chief doctrine official.
"He needs to relearn how to speak, but his overall physical condition is as it was before."
The pope usually offers a weekly noon-time prayer in St Peter's Square on Sundays but he has not been able to do this since 9 February.
Doctors at the facility recently said he is no longer in a critical condition - having been admitted with bronchitis and later diagnosed with double pneumonia and a polymicrobial infection.
It marks the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy and the longest he has been out of public view since his election as pontiff in 2013.
The latest updates from the Vatican about his medical condition have been cautiously upbeat.
On Friday, the Vatican said Francis had been reducing his use of high-flow oxygen to help him breathe.
There are plans for the Pope to meet the King and Queen, who are making a state visit on 8 April.

Upon recovery, she alleges to have found herself in a place she could only describe as hell. Even decades later, she vividly remembers the experience and shares her story to validate others who have had near-death experiences. Speaking on the podcast, she insisted her memory of the ordeal was still "as crisp as could be", adding: "To me, it proves it happened not in my brain but in my soul - and you can't turn the soul off." Raised Catholic, Kathy spent her childhood attending Catholic schools and Sunday church services. However, life struggles and traumas, including divorce and the loss of a baby, led her to question her faith in God. She asked: "I'm a nice person, why does this stuff keep happening to me?" She caught a severe strain of flu after caring for a friend who was ill in Seattle, reports the Express US. With alarming symptoms, she said: "I was coughing up blood... I could feel my life force draining out through my feet." A doctor diagnosed Kathy with ARDS - known fully as acute respiratory distress syndrome - a life-threatening illness that occurs when your lungs are severely compromised. Kathy, who was in her fifties at the time, was put into a drug-induced coma and given a mere 38% chance of survival. She had an experience that she says 'haunts her to this day' that started by 'waking up' in a "totally dark place". She described witnessing an eerie "reddish glow" which she initially mistook for a sunrise. However, she claimed this soon developed into a "pretty but weird" swirling fog that started getting "a little too warm" and began to give off a "really bad" smell. She said: "Then this voice just boomed out, scared me half to death and it said 'do you know where you are'. I'm thinking, and the only thing I can come up with is hell. The voice did this maniacal laugh and I just ran into the darkness. I didn't care if I hit a wall, fell in a ditch, that thing was going to get me so I kept running." Things then took a bizarre turn as Kathy found herself being transported to various strange places. She says these included a ruined city with collapsing buildings and a warzone before encountering what she describes as "a demon". She said the 'demon' offered her a "way out" if she completed a simple gardening task. Kathy claimed she "had no better offers" when she was handed "children's scissors" and was told to cut down seven-foot-tall blackberry bushes that would keep growing back. She then spent a considerable amount of time walking along a dirt road, with nothing around but the occasional pile of rocks. All the while, Kathy claimed she had "no idea [she] was dead" and mentioned in the podcast that she came across some of her living relatives during the journey she took. Kathy told the podcast host that she never experienced a flatline, indicating no physical death occurred. However, she said: "It's very common, and is accepted now in the groups that I belong to, that if you're in a coma, your consciousness can wander off." She said: "I started off in hell but ended up in the presence of God". During her experience, Kathy claims to have found "an architect's book" with a plan. She continued: "It was halfway open and I thought they were telling me something. I remember saying, 'that's going to be too hard' and then I saw my friend who had died the month before." She claimed that he had reversed in age from 53 to 35 and looked nothing like he did on his deathbed. Kathy said: "If he's dead, and I'm standing next to him, I must be dead too." Her friend informed her she had "too much left to do" and it wasn't long afterwards that she was "welcomed back to Earth". Kathy said that people who hear her story often deny it, believing that they "don't want it to happen to them". An astounding 5 to 10% of the general population are estimated to have memories of a near-death experience, claims Scientific American. Lots do report having interactions with God and getting a glimpse of the afterlife.

Devastating hospital fire kills three as patients scream for help from windows
Police have arrested a 72-year-old patient after the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg, Germany was gripped by a devastating fire, leaving three people dead and many more injured Three patients have died and dozens more left injured after a horror inferno tore through a hospital. Victims were left desperately screaming out of the windows for help as the Marienkrankenhaus hospital in Hamburg, Germany went up in flames last night. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at the hospital shortly after midnight after it broke out in a room in the elderly ward on the ground floor of the building. The fire then ignited the façade, before spreading across all four floors. The three people who died were men aged 84, 85 and 87, police said in a statement. Another 34 people were injured, with one confirmed this morning to be in a life-threatening condition. Another patient, aged 72, was detained on suspicion of starting the blaze. Many of the injured patients were treated at the hospital itself, though two were taken to nearby clinics. A total of 220 firefighters were sent to the scene, with the blaze extinguished within about 20 minutes. Footage from the scene shows firefighters hosing down the charred remains of the ground floor by torchlight, while ambulance crews take out multiple people on stretchers. Other patients are led away from the scene on foot as they are covered in blankets for warmth. Firefighters said they found several patients at the windows calling for help, and telling them that they could not escape their rooms after smoke blocked the exits. People were rescued using ladders and through the building itself. Many of those trapped were elderly and had mobility issues, adding to the complex rescue effort. Later today, police said witness interviews suggested that a 72-year-old patient may have set the fire. He was detained at the hospital on suspicion of arson. A statement from Polizei Hamburg said: "In the course of collecting witness examination, there were signs that a 72-year-old patient could be a strong suspect of the fire." Investigators are looking into whether mental illness was a factor, they added. The Catholic hospital's managing director, Christoph Schmitz, said he had taken "immediate measures to prevent further danger" to patients. He added that the hospital would fully co-operate with authorities in their enquiries. The incident carries echoes of a similar hospital fire a few miles away in the town of Uelzen last year, in which five people died. Firefighters and police, some using ladders, rescued several patients from their rooms after the blaze took hold late in the evening on January 4, 2024. Six people were seriously injured and 16 others had lesser injuries, having suffered smoke inhalation and burns.

Former surgeon jailed for 20 years in France for raping 299 children
Joel Le Scouarnec was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting 299 children. Judges followed the public prosecutor's recommendations regarding the length of the sentence and the criminal court of Morbihan ordered that Le Scouarnec should serve at least two-thirds of the sentence before he can be eligible for release. Le Scouarnec is already serving a 15-year prison sentence from 2020 for the rape and sexual assault of four children. The new trial in Brittany, western France, began in February and laid bare a pattern of abuse between 1989 and 2014. Most of the victims were unconscious or sedated hospital patients at the time of the assaults. The average age was 11. Among the victims were 158 boys and 141 girls. During the trial, advocacy groups accused health authorities of inaction after they were notified as early as 2005 of Le Scouarnec's conviction for possessing child pornography pictures. At the time, no measures were taken to suspend his medical licence or limit his contact with children and Le Scouarnec continued his abuse in hospitals until his arrest in 2017. Prosecutor Stephane Kellenberger asked during his closing arguments: 'Should Joel Le Scouarnec have been the only one in the defendant's box? 'More could have been done. 'Things could have been done differently, even within the notorious layers of French bureaucracy, where responsibilities are so often passed from one authority to another until, eventually, that responsibility is lost, and hits innocent lives.' Le Scouarnec has confessed to all the sexual abuse alleged by the 299 civil parties, as well as to other assaults that are now beyond the statute of limitations. In a shocking admission during the trial, he also acknowledged sexually abusing a family member – a statement made in front of her visibly distraught parents. Le Scouarnec had been convicted in 2005 for possessing and importing child sexual abuse material and sentenced to four months of suspended prison time. Despite that conviction, he was appointed as a hospital practitioner the following year. Child protection groups that have joined the proceedings as civil parties hope that the case will help strengthen the legal framework to prevent such abuse. Le Scouarnec's trial came as activists continue to push to dismantle taboos that have long surrounded sexual abuse in France. The most prominent case was that of Gisele Pelicot, who was drugged and raped by her now ex-husband and dozens of other men who were convicted and sentenced in December to between three and 20 years in prison. In a separate case focusing on alleged abuse at a Catholic school, an inquiry commission of the National Assembly, France's lower house of parliament, is investigating allegations of physical and sexual abuse over five decades. Victims of Le Scouarnec have complained of a perceived lack of attention. 'This trial, which could have served as an open-air laboratory to expose the serious failings of our institutions, seems to leave no mark on the government, the medical community, or society at large,' a group of victims said in a statement. Not all victims were initially aware they had been abused. Some were contacted by investigators after their names appeared in journals kept by Le Scouarnec, in which he meticulously documented his crimes. Others only realised they had been in hospital at the time after checking medical records. Two of his victims took their own lives some years before the trial. Using the cover of medical procedures, the former abdominal and digestive surgeon took advantage of moments when children were alone in their hospital rooms. His method was to disguise sexual abuse as clinical care, targeting young patients who were unlikely to remember the encounters. The notebooks, which detail the abuse in graphic language, have become central to the prosecution's case. Despite the scope of the allegations, Le Scouarnec remained calm and composed throughout the trial. 'I didn't see them as people,' he told the court, in reference to his victims. 'They were the destination of my fantasies. As the trial went on, I began to see them as individuals, with emotions, anger, suffering and distress.' While he offered apologies to some victims, his demeanour struck many as detached and emotionless. 'I don't show emotion, that's just how I am,' he said. 'That doesn't mean I don't feel it, but I don't express it.' The case first came to light in April 2017, when a six-year-old girl told her mother that the man next door had exposed himself and touched her through the fence separating their properties. A search of his home uncovered more than 300,000 photos, including images of child abuse, as well as notebooks where he described himself as a paedophile and detailed his actions. A third trial is expected in the coming years, following the emergence of new allegations during the trial.
