The Advertiser03-07-2025
Wallabies Taniela Tupou and Andrew Kellaway have been named in the NSW Waratahs side to play the British and Irish Lions in Sydney on Saturday night.Tupou, who will start at tighthead prop, and Kellaway, named on the right wing, rejoined the side at Daceyville in Sydney this week after being released from Wallabies camp in Newcastle.
Seemingly out of the running for Sunday's Test against Fiji, Tupou and Kellaway are welcome additions to a Waratahs side attempting to fare better against the powerful tourists than both the Western Force and Queensland Reds have.
The Force succumbed 54-7 in Perth last Saturday night, before the Lions mauled the Reds 52-12 in Brisbane on Wednesday night.
With regular skipper Jake Gordon with the Wallabies, the Waratahs will be captained by long-serving back-rower Hugh Sinclair.Sinclair has been named at No.8 for what will be the last game of his professional rugby career.
Leading the side before a packed home stadium and in such a high-profile game will provide him with a fairytale adieu to the game. Also in the team after being released from the Wallabies' wider training group are Darby Lancaster on the left wing, flyhalf Tane Edmed and, on the bench, lock Matt Philip for his Waratahs debut after returning from Japan.

Fraser McReight to lead the Wallabies in the absence of the injured Harry Wilson

Queensland Reds flanker Fraser McReight will become the Wallabies' 91st captain this weekend, leading an Australian side in Cape Town that will include debutant winger Corey Toole. Chasing back-to-back Rugby Championship wins over South Africa, the Wallabies have made three injury-enforced changes to the team that started in last Sunday morning's 38-22 win over the Springboks in Johannesburg. Brumbies star and Sevens Olympian Toole replaces Dylan Pietsch (fractured jaw), prop Tom Robertson comes in for James Slipper (concussion), while Rob Valetini will start at No.8 in place of Harry Wilson (knee). The absence of regular skipper Wilson has led to his Reds teammate McReight being named captain. 'The squad as a whole has recovered pretty well from what was a very draining and physical Test match on the Highveld last week,' Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said. 'We struggled to contain a powerhouse Springbok start last weekend and we know that we have to improve leading into what's likely to be a bruising encounter in Cape Town on (Sunday morning, AEST).' Experienced pair Nic White and James O'Connor have again been partnered in the halves, with Reds halfback and skipper Tate McDermott to again come off the bench. Wallabies: Tom Robertson, Billy Pollard, Taniela Tupou, Nick Frost, Will Skelton, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight (c), Rob Valetini, Nic White, James O'Connor, Corey Toole, Len Ikitau, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Max Jorgensen, Tom Wright. Bench: Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Williams, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Tate McDermott, Tane Edmed, Andrew Kellaway.

Fraser the McReight choice for Wallabies captaincy

After making the Wallabies No.7 jersey his own, Fraser McReight is now following Michael Hooper into the Test captaincy after being named to lead the Australians against South Africa in Cape Town. McReight will become the Wallabies' 91st captain in their Rugby Championship Test on Saturday (Sunday 0110 AEST) after the 26-year-old was called on to replace Harry Wilson, who is sidelined with a knee injury. The Queenslander continues a long line of openside flankers to have skippered the Wallabies including Hooper, David Pocock, George Smith, Phil Waugh, David Wilson and Simon Poidevin. McReight made his Test debut in 2020 but had to wait to be a regular starter with Hooper finally calling time in 2023 after 125 Tests, including 69 as captain. He has since become one of the first picked in any Australian line-up and was man of the match in their rousing, history-making 38-22 win over the Springboks at Ellis Park. McReight took over the captaincy late in the match when Wilson limped off with coach Joe Schmidt saying that "continuity" gave McReight, a former Australian under 20s captain, an advantage. The choice was made easier with many of Australia's most recent captains out injured. Schmidt said McReight, who has now clocked 30 Tests, was a player who delivered with his actions. "He was captain in the under 20s when he was in the age-group arena, and he's a quiet leader," Schmidt said. "I don't think we don't need someone who's remonstrating or saying a lot, we just need someone who's going to demonstrate the right performance on field that other people can follow, and I think Fraser has demonstrated that. "In lieu of alternative choices with Allan Alaalatoa and James Slipper, two previous captains for us in the last year, both being out injured, with Harry (Wilson) and Liam Wright both out injured, I wouldn't say it was a process of elimination because that's not fair to Fraser, but it was probably not ideal that he's a first-time captain for us. "He at least got a little bit of experience in the back end of the game when Harry went off on last Saturday." The Wallabies are looking to become just the second Australian side, and first since 1963, to win consecutive Tests on South African soil. They haven't won in Cape Town in 33 years.

McReight to captain Wallabies, Valetini returns for second Boks clash

'Probably just excitement,' Toole said of his reaction to the news. 'I've been around the squad for a little while now. I've been quite excited for a little while now. I've played a lot of footy with these guys before, like Tom Wright, Lenny IIkitau) and (Nic) Whitey in the backs. Playing with those boys, I've got a lot of confidence and belief that I can go out there this weekend and do my job.' In what shapes as a mouth-watering duel between wing pairings, Toole and Max Jorgensen will face off against Canaan Moodie and Kolbe, who is returning from injury in Cape Town. Kurt-Lee Arendse is injured. Toole is likely to be targeted by the Boks aerially, but said he took inspiration from Kolbe and Arendse having made switches from sevens, and having the same traits as him: small and fast. 'They started their rugby journey in sevens and I can take a lot of confidence out of that,' he said. 'Also, they're smaller wingers, a bit like myself. Looking up to those guys who play so well and are some of the best wingers in the world definitely gives me a lot of confidence coming into this weekend.' Toole has been selected in five separate Wallabies squads since the Rugby Championship last year. He was potentially set to get a Test cap last year but went to the Paris Olympics instead, and almost won a bronze medal. But all the training sessions have him ready. 'Obviously, I wanted to play last year but didn't get the opportunity. But the longer you be amongst the squad and the more trainings you do, you definitely get a lot more confidence out of that,' Toole said. 'Coaches like Joe and 'Lord' (Laurie Fisher), when you're working with them day in and day out, they also bring a lot of confidence with you, definitely.' Schmidt said he was confident, too, in Toole's ability to handle the step up. Valetini said he was pretty pumped to get back onto the field after watching most of the Wallabies' campaign this year with a calf injury, but particularly the two wins over the Lions and the Springboks. The Brumbies No.8 and back-to-back Wallabies MVP missed the Test against Fiji, and then the first and third Tests against the Lions. His one half in Melbourne helped the Wallabies rediscover their physicality, however. 'Obviously, seeing the team be so successful over the past two games and me being on the sideline, it really drives you and a bit of motivation as well just to get through rehab,' he said. 'It's not a fun time in rehab so any motivation you can get to do drills day by day, that helps. Obviously, I've been excited with the group and the growth that they've shown over the past two games and just really happy to be back.' Wary of the Springbok backlash in Cape Town, Schmidt said losing Wilson was unwelcome but not many coaches get to turn to their best player as a replacement. 'Losing Harry is not ideal at all, and Rob's played 40 minutes for us and that's all so far this season, so it's good to have Rob back,' Schmidt said. 'I'm sure he'll um acquit himself really well. His selection in the wallaby side is probably one of the most consistent things over the past four or five seasons, and this season there's been a little bit of a hiatus (so) it's nice to have him back.' McReight presented as the logical, and almost only choice, to step up as captain, Schmidt said, with Wilson, Slipper and Allan Alaalaatoa all unavailable. 'Part of the decision was (McReight) finished the game last week as captain so it was almost the continuity,' Schmidt said. 'I felt he finished the game well, and he was captain of the (Australial) under 20s when he was um in the age group arena. 'He's a quiet leader, and I don't think we don't need someone who's uh remonstrating or saying a lot. We just need someone who's going to demonstrate the right performance on field that other people can follow and I think Fraser has demonstrated that.' Loading 'And you know in lieu of of alternative choices ... I wouldn't say it was a process of elimination, because that's not fair to Fraser, but it was probably not ideal that he's a first-time captain for us, but he at least got a little bit of experience in the back end of the game when Harry went off last saturday.' Wilson left the field in Johannesburg with a knee issue and though scans cleared him of major damage, a Wallabies press release said the big No.8 was being 'managed'.
