Sevilla victorious in bid to remove star player's suspension

Yahoo30-04-2025
Sevilla have been dragged into the La Liga relegation battle in recent weeks, and defeat to Leganes would see them fall further into danger. There had been a fear that they would be without their star attacker for this weekend's showdown at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, but this now looks to be over.
In Sevilla's last La Liga match against Osasuna, Dodi Lukebakio was sent off in the first half for lashing out at Alejandro Catena. Los Nervionenses were furious after this decision, and as such, they have been desperately trying to have the decision overturned.

Sevilla saw an appeal to the Spanish Football Federation's Disciplinary Committee turned down, and in the end, they explored the legal route. And this has proven to be successful, with Diario AS reporting that the Belgian winger's suspension has now been removed.

The Contentious-Administrative Court has sided with Sevilla, who claimed that the decision to send off Lukebakio 'lacked sufficient basis'. As such, he will be eligible to play against Leganes this weekend, which is a massive boost to Los Nervionenses' chances of picking up a much-needed victory.
Lukebakio has been Sevilla's standout performer this season, with 11 goals and two assists in 33 La Liga appearances. He has blanked in his last four matches, but he will hope that his run comes to an end against Leganes.
Even if Sevilla do manage to avoid relegation, there is no doubt that it has been another disappointing campaign. And things could get worse before they get better as they need to sell in the early stages of the summer in order to ease their financial problems. Given his spectacular form this season, it would be no surprise to see clubs come in for Lukebakio, so there is a chance that the Andalusians are without him in the relatively near future.

Watch Football España x CNN: The USA game, Thomas Partey reaction and Barcelona's title defence

Barcelona and Villarreal have dominated the headlines early on in the week that will welcome back La Liga competition for the first time in the 2025-26 season. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have given approval for Villarreal's home game against Barcelona to take place in Miami, Florida, at the end of the December, on the final matchday before the Christmas break. It has been suggested before, with the first proposal put forward seven years ago for Girona to 'host' Barcelona in Miami. However the RFEF had until blocked La Liga's attempts to expand La Liga into the United States, but have given the green light. UEFA and FIFA must now take a firm decision on the matter. Villarreal owner Fernando Roig is firmly behind the USA game. Real Madrid oppose La Liga match being held abroad Meanwhile Real Madrid have thrown their weight behind the lobby against the idea, arguing that the change of venue would alter the home and away format, and thus compromise the integrity of the competition. They have called on UEFA and FIFA to reject the request, but FIFA and UEFA have both hinted at an openness to hosting European games abroad in the past. Reaction to Thomas Partey signing Meanwhile former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey was seen on the pitch for the first time since signing for Villarreal, and for the first time since being charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. President Fernando Roig has defended Partey, but some Villarreal fans have made their disgust perfectly clear. Barcelona's title defence As Barcelona kick off their title defence on Saturday away at Son Moix to RCD Mallorca, with two key additions and one major departure. Football España gave CNN World Sport a brief preview of where Barcelona have improved, and what questions they may have to answer next season.

Motherwell's Miller completes Udinese medical

Scotland midfielder Lennon Miller has completed a medical with Udinese as he edges towards a move to Italy. Motherwell reportedly rejected bids for the 18-year-old from both the Serie A side and Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in January. However, the teenager was given permission to travel to Udine on Monday and is closing in on a reported £4.75m move. Miller has yet to play this season, with Motherwell saying previously he was carrying an injury for four weeks. Manager Jens Berthel Askou said on Saturday that Miller had been left out of their goalless draw with St Mirren because of "things going on in the background". The son of former Aberdeen and Falkirk striker Lee Miller has already made 76 senior appearances. He was a near ever-present last season as Motherwell finished eighth in the Scottish Premiership, scoring four goals in 41 games and earning his first two Scotland caps. Asked about Miller's absence on Saturday, Askou said: "Yes, it was a final call with everything taken into consideration. "It's not a secret that there are things going on in the background. We know he's been out for four weeks. "How much risk are you willing to take on a player like him in that situation? The decision was that we kept him out of it." Official: Real Madrid reject La Liga plans to hold Barcelona vs Villarreal in USA

Real Madrid have on Tuesday released a statement, officially rejecting the plans of La Liga to stage their first-ever fixture outside of Spain. This comes, for those who may have missed it, after it was revealed that Javier Tebas and co. are actively working towards moving the scheduled meeting between Villarreal and Barcelona in December to the USA. Specifically, the plan is for the gameweek 17 fixture to be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Many have already made clear their disillusionment with as much, adamant that any move outside of Spain calls into question the integrity of the La Liga season as a whole. And as alluded to above, on Tuesday evening, one such outfit have in turn made their grievances very much known. In a lengthy statement released across the club's social media platforms, Real Madrid hit out at La Liga, as follows: Real Madrid CF wishes to express to its members, supporters, and football fans in general its firm rejection of the proposal to play the matchday 17 match of the National First Division League Championship between Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona outside of Spain. The measure, implemented without prior information or consultation with the clubs participating in the competition, violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity that governs double-round league competitions (one match at home and the other at the opposing team's home), altering the competitive balance and granting an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs. The integrity of the competition demands that all matches be played under the same conditions for all teams. Unilaterally modifying this regime violates the equality between contenders, compromises the legitimacy of the results, and sets an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on interests other than strictly sporting interests, clearly affecting sporting integrity and risking adulteration of the competition. If this proposal is implemented, its consequences would be so serious that they would mark a turning point for the world of football. Any such modification must, in all cases, have the express and unanimous agreement of all clubs participating in the competition, in addition to strictly adhering to the national and international regulations governing the organization of official competitions. In defense of this principle, Real Madrid has already carried out three specific actions: 1. Request that FIFA, as the guarantor of international football rules, not authorize the match without the prior consent of all clubs participating in the competition. 2. Request to UEFA, as guarantor of the integrity of European competitions and regulatory consistency with FIFA, to urge the RFEF to withdraw or deny the request, reaffirming the criteria established in 2018 that prevents official matches in domestic competitions from being played outside of national territory, except in duly justified exceptional circumstances, which do not apply here. 3. Request to the Higher Sports Council not to grant the necessary administrative authorization without such unanimous consent. Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to respecting the national and international rules that guarantee the fairness and proper functioning of official competitions, and will defend their compliance before all competent bodies.
