Thirty-one-year old Mxolisi Dingezweni from KwaNtlele in the Eastern Cape will never walk free again after being sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his 30-year-old girlfriend.
The Lusikisiki Regional Court has sentenced Dingezweni to life imprisonment for the murder of his 30-year-old girlfriend.
Eastern Cape provincial spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed that Dingezweni, from KwaNtlele area, Makhwaleni Administrative Area, was convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death at her home on March 22, 2025.
Matyolo said the murder followed an argument between the couple at a local tavern the previous day.
'Dingezweni was arrested on March 23 and remained in custody until sentencing on May 28.'
Meanwhile, the acting OR Tambo District commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, welcomed the sentence.
'Gender-based violence remains a devastating scourge in our society,' Ntuli said.
'It is profoundly disturbing that the person who promised to love and protect this woman instead brutally took her life, inflicting unimaginable pain on her family. We hope this life sentence delivers justice and aids the family in finding some measure of closure."

IOL News previously reported that the Regional Court sitting in Whittlesea has sentenced 38-year-old Zuko Sigenu to life imprisonment for the murder of his father and an additional 15 years for the earlier murder of a relative, both crimes committed while under the influence of alcohol and while he was out on bail.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said Sigenu's violent spree began on September 25, 2021, during a traditional ceremony at his family home. The court heard that he got into a heated, alcohol-fueled altercation with a relative.
"Despite efforts by others present to defuse the situation, Sigenu pursued the victim after being separated and fatally stabbed him with a sharp object. The State led evidence from two witnesses and successfully secured a conviction based on a combination of direct and circumstantial evidence," said Tyali.
While out on bail for this offence, Sigenu murdered his father on August 12, 2023.
On the night of the second murder, a neighbour testified that Sigenu had been involved in a loud argument with his father, which included desperate pleas from the elderly man, 'Zuko, don't kill me.' Minutes later, he was discovered dead, with over ten stab wounds to his upper body.
Regional Court Prosecutor Siphelo Kwehla successfully argued that the evidence left no room for reasonable doubt, and the court found that Sigenu showed no remorse. The judge called the killing of his father 'an aggravating circumstance' that demanded the harshest possible punishment.

He highlighted that excellent police and community partnership will indeed isolate criminals and create safer communities. 'Excellent detective work by our officers deserves to be celebrated. It takes a focused and dedicated investigating officer to put pieces together until a trail of clues emerges,' he said. Mkhwanazi stated that it was brilliant investigative work by detectives who traced the suspects who shot a South African Revenue Service advocate last year at a hotel in Umhlanga. 'During the year under review, our detectives secured a total of 125 life imprisonment sentences and a total of 1,114 years in jail for 1,239 accused who were found guilty on cases of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and rape,' he said. He noted that KwaZulu-Natal achieved 95% in the summative physical assessment, which is the highest in the country, as well as a firearm competency status of 98%. However, Mkhwanazi said between April 2024 and March 2025, KZN lost six police officers in the line of duty. 'Police in KwaZulu-Natal are policing over 12.4 million counted citizens with just over 19,600 police officers. The killing of one police officer leaves so many community members vulnerable.' Batohi stands her ground as NPA prepares new Gupta extradition bid

Image: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Head, Advocate Shamila Batohi, has revealed that they were in the process of renewing extradition attempts of the Gupta brothers. This is despite criticism of failed prosecutions and extradition. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Friday, Batohi said work was being done to ensure that the brothers were brought to justice. 'The NPA is working very hard, and I don't want to give a time frame, but I am certainly hoping that within the next couple of months, they will be able to put together a new extradition with additional charges,' she said. Batohi said that the previous application failed without any explanation on why their numerous notes sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had not been responded to. However, Batohi stressed that they would still face the same challenges because they didn't know what was the cause of the delay initially. 'We certainly don't want to experience the same fate with the new extradition application when we don't have some of the reasons from the UAE court denying the first application,' she said. Many arrived in large numbers as the police combed the scene for clues. One woman explained that she had been told her husband was among the four victims killed at the Mfuleni taxi rank on Monday at around 6am. 'I called my husband's number several times. However, the police requested that they wait until the area was cleared to avoid further chaos. Major-General Bongani Maqashalala, deputy police commissioner for the detection division, confirmed that two gunmen had stormed a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) office, killing four men and injuring three others. 'One of the three injured is a commuter. We believe the suspects used high-calibre firearms, as evidenced by the crime scene. 'Codeta has a permit to operate in Somerset West but does not have a taxi rank there. We believe this is causing tension with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata),' he said. The situation is being monitored by the Department of Mobility. The police have announced a reward of R100,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge explained that the association had previously written to the MEC of Mobility on August 29, 2024, notifying them of partial services on the M18 route, as Cata operators had prohibited their return with passengers. 'Despite a notice issued on June 3, 2025, to resume operations, upon doing so, Cata operators blocked legal operations, leading to a meeting scheduled for next week. Unfortunately, the dispute escalated into violence, resulting in this tragic loss of life.' Codeta has called on the Western Cape government to strengthen the regulatory framework to protect both taxi operators and commuters. They also urged for enhanced safety measures to prevent further incidents. The shooting occurred just across the road from the Mfuleni satellite police station. 'The conduct of the attackers showed this was no random act; it was planned. The police station was operational at the time, and we had been monitoring the Somerset West route. This remains one of the motives we are investigating,' Maqashalala added. In response, police have deployed additional officers around taxi ranks and have identified potential threats. Maqashalala also urged taxi association members to remain calm. 'We request their cooperation, and we are scheduled to meet with the Department of Mobility. To the community, we ask that they come forward with any information that could assist us in the investigation.' Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais expressed deep concern over the violence. 'It is devastating to see such incidents in our communities. We've been working closely with the SAPS and LEAP services to apprehend the perpetrators and stabilise the industry. The illegal firearms on our streets are also a major concern. We all know that the SAPS is understaffed, and that is why we have been calling for the devolution of policing powers to the province."
