New vehicle sales surged in May: these were the top 10 brands

Suzuki took a dominant second position once again in the brand rankings. Image: Supplied The South African new vehicle market saw buoyant year-on-year growth in May, and the recent interest rate reduction is likely to fuel further momentum in June. According to industry body Naamsa, 45,308 new vehicles were sold in May, representing a gain of 22% over the same month in 2024. Passenger car sales, at 31,741 units, led the charge with a year-on-year gain of 30%, while light commercial vehicles, at 10,938 units, saw 5.8% growth. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles recorded respective gains of 22.7% and 6.7% over May 2024. 88.4% of vehicle sales took place through the dealer channels, Naamsa said, while the rental industry accounted for 6.8% of the pie, or 8.5% in the case of passenger vehicles. Corporate fleet and government sales represented a respective 3.0% and 1.8% of the total. 'The SARB's May decision will add further momentum to these gains, as consumers respond positively to improved credit conditions,' Naamsa said. 'With inflation easing to 2.8%, still well below the SARB's 3% to 6% target range, and the rand regaining strength amid improving investor sentiment, the macro-economic environment became more conducive to supporting consumer spending and business investment.' The Lusikisiki Regional Court has sentenced Dingezweni to life imprisonment for the murder of his 30-year-old girlfriend. Eastern Cape provincial spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo confirmed that Dingezweni, from KwaNtlele area, Makhwaleni Administrative Area, was convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death at her home on March 22, 2025. Matyolo said the murder followed an argument between the couple at a local tavern the previous day. 'Dingezweni was arrested on March 23 and remained in custody until sentencing on May 28.' Meanwhile, the acting OR Tambo District commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, welcomed the sentence. 'Gender-based violence remains a devastating scourge in our society,' Ntuli said. 'It is profoundly disturbing that the person who promised to love and protect this woman instead brutally took her life, inflicting unimaginable pain on her family. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said Sigenu's violent spree began on September 25, 2021, during a traditional ceremony at his family home. The court heard that he got into a heated, alcohol-fueled altercation with a relative. "Despite efforts by others present to defuse the situation, Sigenu pursued the victim after being separated and fatally stabbed him with a sharp object. The State led evidence from two witnesses and successfully secured a conviction based on a combination of direct and circumstantial evidence," said Tyali. While out on bail for this offence, Sigenu murdered his father on August 12, 2023. On the night of the second murder, a neighbour testified that Sigenu had been involved in a loud argument with his father, which included desperate pleas from the elderly man, 'Zuko, don't kill me.' Minutes later, he was discovered dead, with over ten stab wounds to his upper body. Regional Court Prosecutor Siphelo Kwehla successfully argued that the evidence left no room for reasonable doubt, and the court found that Sigenu showed no remorse. The judge called the killing of his father 'an aggravating circumstance' that demanded the harshest possible punishment.

How many more must die before we collectively say: Enough is enough? 'We are tired of raising our voices over the same tragedies. In 2019, we were broken by the passing of Uyinene Mrwetyana. We are tired of burying our sisters, our daughters, our friends,' said Masango. 'Olerato's life mattered. Likhona's life mattered. They had dreams, hopes, and futures that were stolen from them. Their stories are not just headlines — they are a damning indictment of a society that continues to fail women and girls,' the activist stressed.

Inside Elon Musk's controversial career with Donald Trump: From political ally to public critic

Elon Musk From supporter to critic: Elon Musk's political journey with Trump. Image: ANGELA WEISS / AFP Elon Musk's political journey with Donald Trump has been marked by a dramatic evolution, from early scepticism to a high-profile partnership, and ultimately, a contentious split. Early interactions and initial scepticism In 2016, Musk was critical of Trump's presidential candidacy, suggesting he lacked the character suitable for leadership. Despite this, Musk accepted roles on Trump's advisory councils in 2017, only to resign later that year in protest of the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. The relationship between the two began to thaw in 2024, following an assassination attempt on Trump. Musk endorsed Trump's re-election bid and became a significant financial backer, contributing over $260 million to Trump. In recognition, Trump appointed Musk as co-chair of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasking him with reducing federal bureaucracy and spending. Trump publicly praised Musk's efforts, stating, "He's a smart guy… he's very much into cutting the budget of our federal government." Musk, in turn, expressed admiration for Trump, saying, "The more I've gotten to know President Trump, the more I like him. I love the guy; he's great." Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Deterioration and departure Despite initial successes, Musk's tenure at DOGE was marred by internal conflicts and policy disagreements. He criticised a new tax and spending bill passed by the Trump administration, arguing it undermined DOGE's cost-cutting goals. Facing mounting challenges, Musk announced his departure from the role after 130 days, stating his intention to reduce political involvement and refocus on his business ventures. Musk's perspective on South Africa Throughout his political engagements, Musk also voiced opinions on the country. He criticised the country's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policies, claiming they contradicted Nelson Mandela's vision and hindered business operations like his satellite internet company, Starlink. "Starlink is not allowed to operate in South Africa, because I'm not black," he posted on X. Additionally, Musk called for sanctions against South African politician Julius Malema, labelling him an 'international criminal' over controversial remarks. "Julius Malema should be designated an international criminal. He is advocating for the genocide of white people in South Africa. Sanctions should be imposed immediately," Musk said in February. However, Malema responded defiantly. "I really think you have entirely lost your left brain: a typical spoiled brat and direct beneficiary of Apartheid whiteness. I know black people look the same to you, typical racist. Look closer, and you will realise those are two different people. America is exposing us to its stupidity. I don't care about your sanctions; I will never stop fighting for black people to be equal to white people," Malema said. Nation awaits verdict in Joshlin Smith human trafficking and kidnapping case

Judge Nathan Erasmus will deliver the long-awaited sentencing for the suspects in the Joshlin Smith disappearance. Image: . The day the entire nation has been waiting for has arrived - the day of sentencing in the Joshlin Smith disappearance. Jacquen 'Boeta' Appollis, Steveno van Rhyn, and Kelly Smith will know their fate on Thursday. On Wednesday, State Advocate Zelda Swanepoel urged the Western Cape High Court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment for the human trafficking conviction. While she left sentencing on the kidnapping charge to the discretion of the court, she emphasised the severity of the crime. 'We use today's evidence to be the voice of Joshlin,' said Swanepoel. Judge Nathan Erasmus also referred to the trauma this case has left behind, recalling an earlier statement of Kelly's mother, Amanda Smith Daniels, where she stated she would go in a frantic search for Kelly's son should he be only two minutes later on his way home from school. 'Will Saldanha ever be the same after this case?' Judge Erasmus asked. 'This instance has changed the whole community and changed how we all look at things,' Swanepoel submitted. She called on the court to take the victim impact statements into account that were handed in as evidence during the morning. Video Player is loading.
