DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man is in Boston, attempting to finish his 30th Boston Marathon.
John Taylor III knows training for marathons means logging lots of miles.
'It's fun having goals,' he said while running.
His most recent goal he's working toward is a meaningful milestone…
'So now I've done 29 Boston Marathons total, with 27 in a row,' Taylor explained.
This year will mark 30 Boston Marathons for the 66-year-old. His first one was in 1994.
'I was really sick that morning. My mom's there, thinking you shouldn't do this. You don't feel good,' Taylor recalls. 'And I said, 'you know, Mom, this could be the only time I ever get to run the Boston Marathon. I may never be able to qualify again.' Because it took me five tries before I did qualify.'
Drake Week: Relays, Beautiful Bulldog, Shot Put Contest, more
He kept qualifying and kept coming back, making him an eventual member of the 'Quarter Century Club.'
'Which are those who have run 25 in a row,' Taylor explained. 'And once you have that, you guarantee entry as long as your string stays active.'
Taylor stayed active as a runner throughout his life, participating in 113 marathons: one in every state, 10 outside the U.S., including Antarctica.
All those steps eventually took a toll on his body, leading to challenges in future races.
'And so, this next one is a critical one number 30, because I just had a hip replacement surgery in October,' Taylor said. 'And this would be the first one with this new hip. So I'm like learning to run again.'
Learning to run again is made a little easier with an anti-gravity treadmill, which creates a lower-impact running surface.
Still, it's been hard work for Taylor and his doctors, who had less than six months to get him rehabbed and ready to go.
'Most surgeons doing total hip replacements would not recommend running marathons after that, but we made that way happen,' Beth Schweizer, his physical therapist, said. 'He's doing a combination of running and walking and we feel like it's a safe way and he's gotten the OK with his surgeon to do this. And we're really happy and confident that he's going to reach his goal.'
Remember, Taylor likes having goals and is determined to meet them.
While this marathon probably won't be his fastest, it could be his most memorable. John Taylor's just focused on getting it done.
'Time doesn't matter. It's that feeling crossing that finish line,' Taylor said. 'I don't care if it's a 5k, 100-yard dash, mile, whatever it is, it's just such a riveting feeling that I did it. Nobody can ever take that away from you.'
Taylor said he was never a runner until he decided to do a marathon in college at his alma mater, Drake University. It's a timely nod to the Drake Relays happening this week.

Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026

Wisconsin football has a new highest-ranked commit in the class of 2026 Wisconsin football landed a commitment from class of 2026 three-star defensive back Zachary Taylor on Friday. Taylor chose the Badgers over top contenders Houston, Texas Tech and TCU. He completed visits to the latter two on June 3 and May 2, respectively, plus was scheduled to visit Houston on June 19. Just one full week after his June 6 official visit to Madison, Wisconsin, Taylor pledged to the Badgers. 247Sports ranks the Fulshear, Texas, native as the No. 540 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 43 cornerback and the No. 76 recruit from his home state. He became Wisconsin's 12th commitment in the 2026 cycle. Notably, he is now the highest-ranked recruit of that group, edging three-star defensive lineman Djidjou Bah. His commitment pushed the class up to No. 35 nationally and No. 12 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and his staff are working to deliver a third consecutive top-25 recruiting class. While the program's 2026 class is a significant distance from that threshold, partially because it is still looking for its first blue-chip commit, several of its top targets remain uncommitted. Taylor's commitment may begin a run of positive recruiting news in that regard. Wisconsin Secures Commitment From Versatile DB Zachary Taylor

Wisconsin Secures Commitment From Versatile DB Zachary Taylor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After over a week without an addition to its 2026 class, the Wisconsin football team got back on the board with the commitment of 3-star defensive back Zachary Taylor (Katy, Texas). Advertisement Pulling Taylor out of Texas wasn't going to be easy, but he took an official visit to Wisconsin at the start of the month, and the Badgers took advantage of his time in Madison. Beyond Wisconsin, Taylor's official visits included West Virginia, Texas Tech, Pitt, and Houston. He ultimately chose the Badgers over the other four programs. The newest Wisconsin commit announced his pledge to the Badgers via his social media. With a background as a multi-sport athlete that includes track and soccer, Taylor's athleticism has the Wisconsin football staff extremely excited, and they anticipate he'll develop into a standout player. Advertisement He is a versatile player who has played both cornerback and safety in high school. Although he is listed as a cornerback on 247Sports, the Wisconsin staff views him as a safety. Zachary Taylor in the Recruiting Rankings Though currently rated as a 3-star prospect by major recruiting services, Taylor is a perfect example of the type of player whose ranking could significantly improve, possibly reaching 4-star status by the end of his senior year. But as of right now, here is where he falls on the major recruiting websites. 247Sports 247Sports probably has the highest rating on Taylor, albeit as a cornerback. But a rating of 89 is a borderline 4-star player on its rating scale. The 247Sports Composite has him as the 439th-overall player in the country and the 43rd-ranked cornerback. Advertisement Rivals Similar to 247Sports, Rivals has Taylor as a borderline 4-star player. Their 5.7 rating for the new Wisconsin football commit is the highest rating a 3-star prospect can get before hitting 5.8, which would give him a fourth star. The recruiting site does not have him in any national, state, or positional rankings. On3 On3 is the site lowest on Taylor. They have him as a 3-star prospect as well and a rating of just 85.95. 3-star prospects fall in the 80-89 range. They have him as the 926th-overall prospect in the 2026 class and the 83rd-ranked safety. Where the Wisconsin Football Recruiting Class Stands With the Addition of Taylor Zachary Taylor's commitment pushed the 2026 class to 12 players for the Wisconsin football program. The addition of Taylor gives the Badgers a nice little boost, pushing them from 40th to 33rd in the 247Sports Team Rankings as it currently stands. Advertisement Taylor also becomes the Bagders' top-ranked player in the class according to the 247Sports rankings. With just 12 committed players, the Wisconsin football team still has plenty of work to do in filling out the rest of this class. 4-star running back Amari Latimer is a top target for the team, and there are still a few targets at wide receiver, including Jayden Petit, Zachary Washington, and Zion Legree. Recruiting may have slowed down a bit, but there are still things coming in the near future.
