Lakers executive reveals plan to build around Luka Doncic -- not LeBron James
LeBron James has spent his entire NBA career as the cornerstone of his respective franchise -- whether it be the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, or Los Angeles Lakers. That will no longer be the case for the 2025-26 season.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed as much at Saturday's press conference to announce Luka Doncic's three-year extension worth $165 million. The Lakers will be searching for a new co-star to pair with the superstar point guard.
Pelinka hinted as to why the franchise has been prioritizing their financial flexibility.
"Make no mistakes, we're in win championship now mode always," the Lakers general manager told reporters. "I don't wanna bore people with apron talk, ... but in the new system that we're in, having optionality is key to building teams. ... [It] is there for us to use now if the right move comes."
James, who will turn 41 this season, made waves earlier in the offseason when he stated to his intention to watch the Lakers' offseason moves closely before deciding on his future. Pelinka stated at the press conference that conversations with James and Rich Paul had been "positive and supportive."
However, the Lakers general manager did not seem to dismiss the idea that James could finish his career elsewhere.
"All the interactions we've had with LeBron and his camp Rich in particular have been positive and supportive," Pelinka said. "We want to respect his ability to come up with his timetable. If he had a chance to retire a Laker that would be great."

Steelers' Mike Tomlin preseason press conference ends in hilarious silence
The post-game press conference, a perfect opportunity for reporters to ask all the hard-hitting questions — or not? Following the Pittsburgh Steelers' 31-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason opener on Saturday, Mike Tomlin opened the floor for reporters to ask anything about the game — and what happened next was nothing short of hilarious: no one asked a single question, leaving the Steelers head coach smiling as the press conference ended in almost record time. Reporters might've had all their questions answered by the Steelers' strong performance in the preseason opener — one that featured several standouts on both offense and defense. The Steelers have another preseason matchup next Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 7:00 PM EST — but it remains to be seen when 20-year veteran Aaron Rodgers will make his Pittsburgh debut. Steelers QB Mason Rudolph masterful in Arthur Smith's offense
The Pittsburgh Steelers have put in a lot of work this offseason to rebuild the offense. And despite most of those new faces not being in uniform Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the passing game was highly efficient with Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson running the show. Rudolph started the game, and he was almost surgical, going 9-for-10 for 80 yards and a beautiful touchdown pass to tight end Darnell Washington. Thompson followed him, playing all of the second half and around half of the second quarter and the offense didn't miss a beat. Thompson finished with 233 passing yards on 20-of-28 passing and three more passing touchdowns. Neither quarterback threw an interception. What really stood out was how Rudolph and Thompson went about it. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has clearly opened things up compared to last season and this was no more evident than in the team's willingness to throw to the middle of the field. Last season, Smith basically cut off half the field in the passing game by refusing to scheme plays between the hashes.
