Chinese tech firm holds job fair for ICT graduates in Uganda

The Star8 hours ago
KAMPALA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese technology giant Huawei on Wednesday launched this year's university job fair in Uganda, aiming to connect graduates with employment opportunities in the country's information and communications technology (ICT) sector.
The one-day event, dubbed the 2025 Campus Recruitment Program, was held at Kyambogo University in the national capital of Kampala, drawing hundreds of ICT students and recent graduates. It took place under the theme "The Sky Is the Limit" and the slogan "A Better U for a Better Uganda."
Julius Mugume, digital director at Huawei Uganda, told Xinhua that the recruitment program offers a comprehensive training system for new employees, with a strong emphasis on career development.
"Huawei offers mentor coaching, where every new employee will have a one-on-one mentor after joining the company," Mugume said. "The mentor will not only arrange work for the new employee, but also help solve problems on the job, enabling a quick transition from 'campus person' to 'workplace person.'"
Sooma Mukyala Fouziya, spokesperson for Huawei Uganda, noted that the Chinese firm aims to support the growth of Uganda's tech community by equipping young professionals with the necessary tools, resources, and platforms to thrive in the rapidly evolving sector.
"Our campus recruitment program aims to shape tomorrow's workforce by offering university finalists and fresh graduates exciting opportunities to kick-start their careers in various disciplines," she added.
"I think this is a great opportunity since I've completed my studies. It's encouraging to see companies like Huawei creating platforms where young people like us can connect directly with potential employers," said Praise Atukunda, a telecommunications graduate.

Hearse driver tragically dies on the way to a funeral

Compiled by MARTIN CARVALHO, and IT was a heart-breaking end for a man who was driving a hearse to a funeral. He had collapsed and died while transporting a corpse in South Korea's Gyeonggi province on Sunday morning, China Press reported. The hearse was found stopped right in front of the entrance of the Yangji Tunnel on the Yeongdong Expressway. Police arrived at the scene 10 minutes later and found a man in his 50s slumped in the driver's seat. They broke the window to help the man and performed CPR before sending him to the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors failed to revive him. Police believe that the man had lost consciousness mid-journey. > The daily also reported that millennials in China are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) 'lovers' for emotional support to avoid the heartache of being in a real-life relationship. Nuonuo (not her real name) admitted to having an AI boyfriend with whom she discusses her worries and work troubles daily. She even secretly chats with her 'boyfriend' during work and claims they 'go out' on dates and spend birthdays together. 'We never argue. We don't have to spend money. Yet, there is a sense of companionship,' she said. Millions of mainland Chinese have downloaded apps offering AI companionship such as Maoxiang and Xingye. In just one year, Maoxiang's user base has more than doubled to over 2.2 million users. However, experts said that an over-reliance on AI for companionship would only widen the social rift between people. This, they said, would exacerbate the falling birthrate in China, which dropped to just 1.18 births per woman in 2022. About 90% of these app users were women, which meant the chances of men being in a relationship have fallen further. East China's time-honoured ceramic industry sees export boom

A staff member operates at a workshop of Dehua Huamao Ceramics Co Ltd in Dehua County of southeast China's Fujian Province on June 10, 2025. – Xinhua photo FUZHOU (July 3): Every June, ceramic enterprises in Dehua County, east China's Fujian Province, enter their busiest production season as international clients place advance orders for Christmas and other holidays. At Quanzhou Shunmei Group Co Ltd, rows of Christmas-themed ceramic figurines are being carefully packed for export. 'Although international trade remains challenging and some orders have been impacted, we remain confident,' said Zheng Pengfei, the company's general manager. 'This year, we're actively exploring emerging markets, reducing dependence on a sole market, and participating in domestic and international expos to tap into new demand,' he added. Despite rising raw material costs and uncertainties in global demand, Dehua's ceramic industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience. From January to April this year, the county's ceramic exports had exceeded 1.2 billion yuan (about US$167 million), representing a 23.69 per cent year-on-year increase, according to official data. An ancient county with centuries of ceramic-making history and famed for its white porcelain, Dehua has established a full industrial chain that spans kaolin mining, clay processing, mold-making, glazing, forming and sales. More than 4,500 ceramic enterprises operate in the county, employing over 100,000 people. Dehua ceramics are now exported to more than 190 countries and regions worldwide. Industry insiders say Dehua's success lies in its shift from competing on price to competing on design, branding and production efficiency, driven by a strong focus on innovation and transformation. 'Our output value reached 200 million yuan in 2024, with average annual growth of 20 per cent in recent years,' said Zeng Liangwang, deputy general manager of Fujian Dehua Tongxin Ceramics Co Ltd. He noted that the company is accelerating the development of 'ceramics-plus' products, including artistic and smart flowerpots and festive homeware, which are now sold to over 50 countries and regions. The Tangfeng Ceramics Co Ltd developed a tea set inspired by China's Dunhuang murals, as part of its efforts to enhance product value through storytelling and cultural integration. 'Teaware with cultural depth is more attractive to consumers and allows us to increase added value,' said the company's general manager Li Jianyang. 'As industry competition intensifies, we must dig deeper into our cultural heritage.' Likewise, Shunmei is forging cooperation with world-renowned brands like Disney and Universal Studios, whose intellectual property has made its products more appealing to global consumers. Meanwhile, a wave of intelligent transformation is reshaping the production landscape, with widespread adoption of technologies like 3D clay printing, 5G-enabled smart factories, and automated casting machines. In Tongxin Ceramics' 3D printing zone, once the modeling is finished, the data is transmitted to the printer. A hollow, sculptural flower vase that once took hours to craft can now be produced in just 30 minutes. In addition, Tongxin operates 75 automated production lines at full capacity. It takes just 10 seconds to press a lump of clay into a flower pot, 15 seconds for a mold to complete the slip-casting process, and only 10 minutes for a fully automated line to complete an entire production cycle. Dehua Huamao Ceramics Co Ltd has established a 5G-enabled network that connects its production equipment and enables real-time monitoring. 'Our data system collects key process indicators to support continuous optimisation,' said Chen Weibin, deputy general manager of Huamao Ceramics. The local government is committed to building a complete 'ceramic industry ecosystem' covering raw material supply, technological innovation and talent development, with the goal of providing sustained momentum for the industry's long-term growth. 'Behind the resilience of the ceramics industry is the joint efforts of enterprises and government,' said Zeng Xiansheng, an official with the ceramics development committee of Dehua. – Xinhua ceramic China Dehua County Xinhua

U.S. stocks close mixed after job reports

NEW YORK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended mixed on Wednesday as optimism over new trade deals helped offset concerns about a slowing labor market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 10.52 points, or 0.02 percent, to 44,484.42. The S&P 500 rose 29.41 points, or 0.47 percent, to 6,227.42, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 190.24 points, or 0.94 percent, to 20,393.13. Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and materials leading the gainers by adding 1.70 percent and 1.33 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, health and utilities led the laggards by losing 0.97 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively. Gains were driven in part by upbeat sentiment around trade after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new deal with Vietnam that includes a 20 percent tariff on Vietnamese imports. Shares of Nike, which sources a significant portion of its footwear from Vietnam and China, jumped more than 4 percent following the news. Earlier in the day, stocks came under pressure after a disappointing report from ADP showed the private sector shed 33,000 jobs in the prior month, which was the first decline in more than a year and well below economist forecasts of a 100,000-job increase. While the ADP report does not always align with the government's official nonfarm payrolls data, due on Thursday, it raised concerns about broader labor market weakness. Economists expect 110,000 jobs to have been added in June. Some strategists said the report could push the Federal Reserve closer to a rate cut, especially if government data also shows softness. Market expectations for a July rate cut rose slightly to 23 percent, up from 21 percent a day earlier, according to CME FedWatch. "If we end up having a fairly weak employment report, then that could allow the Fed to be cutting rates," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research. "We think labor demand is slowing, but so far the slowdown is modest," Morgan Stanley chief U.S. economist Michael Gapen wrote in a note to clients. Among major tech movers, Tesla surged nearly 5 percent despite reporting a year-over-year drop in global second-quarter deliveries, as the decline was smaller than feared. Apple gained 2.22 percent, extending its winning streak to four sessions. Nvidia and Broadcom rose 2.58 percent and 1.95 percent, respectively, and Alphabet added 1.61 percent. Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms slipped modestly.
