Sabah to host international event on rural social enterprise from Oct 31-Nov 4

The Star07-06-2025
KOTA KINABALU: A gathering to unite changemakers from across the globe with the aim of exchanging knowledge and networking purposes is set to take place in Sabah from Oct 31 to Nov 4.
This gathering, which would involve entrepreneurs and representatives of rural communities, will be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
The Rural Social Enterprise Gathering is held in conjunction with the Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) which takes place in Taipei, Taiwan from Oct 27 to Oct 31.
'This gathering will catalyse hands-on learning, cross‑sector collaboration and sustainable solutions for local challenges,' said Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (Scenic) chief executive officer Viviantie Sarjuni.
Gerry Higgins, founder and managing director of Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) said the event would offer an opportunity for rural social enterprises from every continent to enhance their understanding of the approaches and solutions delivered by rural communities in Sabah and around the world.
'Rural communities often have more in common with their counterparts in other countries than with their urban neighbours, so SEWF is proud to support the innovation and commitment of Scenic to create this opportunity for exchange of best practice and learning,' he said.
This event is hosted by Scenic in partnership with SEWF and the state Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (KSTI).
Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with rural social enterprises through a learning visit to rural social enterprises in Sabah and a forum with dynamic discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions.
After the SEWF 2025 in Taipei, delegates will travel to Sabah for the Rural SE Gathering, further solidifying the state's role as a key player in advancing social enterprise
initiatives.
Sabah, located in East Malaysia, is the second-largest state in Malaysia and home to a diverse population of over three million people comprising more than 30 ethnic groups, including the native Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau, and Murut.
Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, Sabah faces economic challenges, particularly in rural areas.
Social enterprises are growing in Sabah as innovative solutions to address these challenges by empowering communities, creating sustainable livelihoods, and leveraging local resources to promote grassroots economic development.
Those who wish to be part of this event can get more information or purchase tickets at https://scenic.my/ruralsegathering/, with early bird rates available until June 21, and standard rates available up to Oct 15.

Govt open to new, urgent Kelantan projects, despite major projects listed in 13MP, says PM

KOTA BHARU: The government is open to accepting applications for new, urgent projects from Kelantan, despite allocation for major projects has been listed in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the new application will be studied by the government if there is a priority, especially if they have an urgency such as flood mitigation, water supply, energy supply, and eradication of hardcore poverty. "We have started engaging on the national budget, which will certainly take into account the 13MP, so we will review what can be added and prioritised," he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program at the grounds of Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium here on Saturday (Aug 9). Also present were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang; Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said compared to before, engagement sessions have been simplified by taking into account input from the state government. "Every time we visit a state, there is a special session that gives the state government an opportunity to provide input, in addition to monitoring ongoing projects. "Sometimes, projects we announce have a large budget, but their implementation is stalled, which is why we continue these discussions with the aim of more effective implementation," he said. On the Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, Anwar said it was the best opportunity for the government to get closer and convey information directly to the people. "Hopefully, through this, the government close in on issues of the people and elevate programs that needed attention," he said. The Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, led by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, was a three-day event that began last Thursday (Aug 7). The program offered over 100 direct services to the public, an exhibition of the latest technology, and various community-reaching initiatives through the comprehensive approach of the Madani Government. — Bernama

SST on imported fruit to combat smuggling and support local agriculture, says Anwar

KOTA BHARU: Extending the Sales and Service Tax (SST) to imported fruit is part of the government's efforts to curb ongoing smuggling in border states, says Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that the move was also intended to encourage the public to prioritise local fruit. "Some people are unhappy about the tax on imported fruit, but this is my way of ensuring that people choose local produce. "Otherwise, smuggling will continue through border areas such as Sungai Golok in Kelantan, Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah and Wang Kelian and Padang Besar in Perlis'. He made this statement while officiating at the closing ceremony of the Kelantan edition of the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, held at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Bharu on Saturday (Aug 9). Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar, Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Chang Lih Kang; Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar also said that some imported fruit, such as oranges and apples, remain exempt from the SST for now. On June 27, Treasury secretary-general, Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, said that, while particular imported fruit such as strawberries, blueberries and avocados would remain subject to SST under the extension, the exemption for apples and oranges was intended to ease the financial burden on consumers, given their high consumption among Malaysians. – Bernama
