Penang To Launch Raids On Durian Fraud Hotspots, Warns Sellers Against Mislabelling
KEPALA BATAS, June 17 (Bernama) -- Authorities in Penang have identified several hotspots selling imported durians, particularly from Thailand, falsely marketed as the famed Balik Pulau variety.
State Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said joint operations involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Agriculture Department and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) will be launched soon to curb such fraudulent practices.
'We've identified two or three hotspots where durians are brought in by truck from Thailand but sold as local produce.
'We're just waiting for the right time to conduct raids and issue compounds,' he told reporters after officiating the State Interim Report Launch at the Bumbong Lima Agricultural Training Institute today.
Also present was Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Chief Statistician and Agriculture Census 2024 Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said the enforcement followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring by authorities, including a recent roadblock at the Juru toll plaza involving the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) and other agencies to detect non-compliant agricultural products, especially durians.
While durians from other regions are not banned, Fahmi stressed that sellers must not misrepresent them as Balik Pulau durians.
'We now have a 'Track and Trace' system in place since June 1. Every durian is tagged with a QR code that lets consumers verify its origin, from farm to table,' he said.
He encouraged the public to report suspicious sellers and noted that most legitimate durian farmers in Penang have adopted the tracking system to boost transparency and consumer confidence.

GOF seizes 6 tonnes of coconuts, 8.5 tonnes of rice in border ops
TUMPAT: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled two separate smuggling attempts involving coconuts and rice worth nearly RM370,000 in operations here yesterday. Two lorry drivers were also arrested for possession of the smuggled goods. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said in the first incident, a patrol team spotted a suspicious lorry at an illegal jetty in Pengkalan Kubor around 4.30pm. "Upon inspection, they found about 6,000kg of mature coconuts loaded in the back of the vehicle. "The driver failed to produce valid documentation for the goods. "The total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM210,000," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 3(1)(a) of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority Act 1965 (FAMA Act). In a separate operation at 12.30am, another GOF team stopped a lorry at Jalan Kampung Bendang Pak Yong in Simpangan. "The vehicle was found to be carrying 8,500kg of white rice suspected to have been smuggled in from Thailand. "The 23-year-old driver is believed to have been delivering the rice for sale in the local market," he said. The total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM159,000. The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of the Padi and Rice Act 1994. Ros Azhan said both cases reflect the persistent smuggling activities along the Malaysia–Thailand border, particularly through ungazetted routes. "The GOF remains committed to intensifying operations such as Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan to curb the flow of contraband and safeguard the country's economic and agricultural interests," he said. He added that enforcement teams would continue to monitor hotspots along the border.

Safe Internet Campaign reaches 11,839 participants nationwide

Teo said the campaign, launched in January in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), educational institutions and relevant agencies, aims to enhance digital literacy and promote a safer online environment, particularly for the younger generation. The campaign seeks to reach over 10,000 educational institutions nationwide by year-end, focusing on four key areas: cyberbullying, online scams and gambling, child sexual exploitation, as well as data protection and digital literacy. 'Between May and August, the campaign is scheduled to be held in 344 schools nationwide, including 64 in Sabah. 'The response has been encouraging, and we aim to deliver the programme using interactive approaches,' Teo told reporters after attending the campaign at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (SRK) Sung Siew today, where 120 Year Four to Year Six pupils took part in the session. Teo said strong collaboration with the Ministry of Education has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the Safe Internet Campaign, particularly in helping students better understand the importance of cybersecurity. She also called on all stakeholders to work together in fostering a safe, healthy and positive digital environment by actively participating in awareness modules, talks and campaign activities to empower communities against cyber threats. 'We cannot deny that children today have (easy) access to gadgets and the internet. It is therefore essential, especially for parents, to take an active role in monitoring their children's online activities. 'We must raise awareness and educate the public, especially children, on digital literacy so they understand the importance of not sharing photos or personal data online. Civil servant, ex-state official nabbed over RM66,000 bribery in land application
KOTA KINABALU (June 17): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah has arrested a civil servant and a former state government department staff on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to RM66,000 as inducement to process land applications and conduct land lot surveys. According to sources, the two male suspects, aged in their 50s and 60s, were detained between 10am and 11am on Tuesday after giving their statements at the Sabah MACC office. 'The suspects are believed to have committed the offence around 2016, despite neither being authorised to process land applications nor owning the land lots involved in the survey,' said a source. Initial investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly received bribes amounting to RM54,000 and RM12,000 respectively from multiple individuals to facilitate the processing of land applications and the census of land lots under the state government's land scheme. When contacted, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. He added that both suspects are expected to be charged soon.
