Tears, tantrums and budgie smugglers! Meet the five Block 2025 couples who are taking on the toughest season yet

Daily Mail4 days ago
It's the renovation reality show that's become an Aussie TV juggernaut - but this year, The Block promises to deliver the most demanding season yet.
Filmed in the heart of Victoria's Daylesford, five couples from across the country have spent the past three months building homes from scratch under high pressure, racing against tight deadlines and under new rules that have left them frozen, frazzled and - at times - in tears.
In an exclusive chat with all five teams outside their homes ahead of the show's premiere, Daily Mail Australia can reveal the 2025 season will be one of the most gruelling - and emotionally charged - in the show's 20-year history.
COPS OFF DUTY
Western Australian police officers Britt and Taz say they've faced high-stakes situations on the job, but nothing prepared them for the emotional toll of leaving their young children behind and diving head-first into a full-scale construction.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
'This was probably the toughest thing we've ever done,' Britt said.
'We expected it to be hard, but not this hard.'
Taz, who famously strips down to his budgie smugglers in the very first episode, says the pair relied on communication and resilience to get through it.
'We go into dangerous situations all the time - but this was out of our comfort zone. The mental fatigue was huge,' he said.
The pair say the experience has only made their relationship stronger.
'In real life, if we argue, I'll say 'talk to me in two business days'. But on the show, you just have to get over it quickly,' Britt said.
FIRST-DATE TOOLS DOWN
For Perth couple Hannah and Can, applying to The Block was something they joked about on their very first date – and now, just 18 months into their relationship, they've made history as the show's first same-sex female couple.
'In Block years, it feels like 20 years!' laughed Hannah.
'We talked about coming on The Block on our first date – and here we are,' Can added. 'It was a dream for us.'
But their reason for doing the show goes far deeper than just ticking off a bucket list.
'We wanted to show people what two girls in love can do,' Hannah said. 'We wanted to be out and proud on national television – and represent women in construction, in design, in leadership.'
Can said the couple are proud to break ground not just with their renovation, but their presence.
'This is 2025,' she said. 'It's amazing that we're finally seeing same-sex female couples on shows like this. We want other girls and young women watching to feel like they can do anything.'
'And we did everything ourselves. We styled, we built, we cried into paint buckets… and then we went again the next day.'
Despite being the newest couple in the competition – they've been together less than two years – they say their relationship came out even stronger.
'I wouldn't have wanted to do it with anyone else,' said Can. 'And I couldn't have done it with anyone else.'
The toughest part? The pressure to deliver under strict worksite cut-off times - and the emotional exhaustion that came with it.
'There were nights we just cried into paint buckets,' Hannah said.
SEVEN-TIME HOPEFULS
Victorian couple Emma and Ben applied to The Block a whopping seven times before finally making it onto the 2025 series.
'We've renovated before, but never at this scale,' Emma said. 'We just wanted to challenge ourselves and tick it off our bucket list.'
The couple say the new rules around working hours - which forced contestants to down tools at set times - helped them avoid the burnout seen in past seasons.
'We actually got to rest, which meant we didn't make silly decisions,' Ben said.
But that didn't mean it was easy.
'We definitely had a few moments where we sat in a corner with our heads in our hands,' Emma admitted.
Still, they'd do it all again.
'We've come out stronger. It was nice to spend so much time together,' Ben said.
LARRIKINS WHO LOVE TO STIR THE POT
Adelaide best mates Robby and Mat say they entered the competition with one goal: to have fun and stir the pot.
And they delivered - with plenty of laughs, cheeky banter, and a few surprises for the street.
'We're just a couple of blokes having a good time building a house and a secret wine cellar,' Mat said.
But their gamble to dig and build below ground level wasn't without risk.
'We had less money than the other teams - so we knew we had to win challenges or it wouldn't happen,' Robby said.
Still, they say they're proud of how they handled themselves and praised the camaraderie among the cast.
'There's no villains this year. Everyone got along. We all helped each other,' Mat said.
Their house? 'It's not for anyone - it's for everyone,' Robby said.
HEARTFELT HOMEBUILDERS
Gold Coast couple Sonny and Alicia, parents of three, say the emotional rollercoaster of The Block was more intense than they expected - but worth every tear.
'This was our second time applying - and it just felt right this year,' Alicia said.
They're also the only team to build a brick house, giving them a clear point of difference.
'It stands out,' Sonny said. 'And we brought the brick inside too. It just feels like a real home.'
The couple say their aim was to build something warm and family-friendly - not just a showpiece.
'We want whoever buys this house to celebrate Christmas here, host birthdays, and have their whole family around,' Alicia said.
Despite the drama and pressure, they say their relationship came out even stronger.
'We've been together 14 years. We made a pact to always have each other's backs,' Alicia said.
'We bicker, sure. But that's how we roll. We don't let it linger.'

Footy supercoach Wayne Bennett declares war on radio stars over disgraceful jokes about his ex-wife and the woman he left her for

NRL supercoach Wayne Bennett is at war with Triple M in Brisbane following a highly offensive skit where his split with ex–wife Trish and the breast size of the woman he left her for were featured in a mock interview. While the breakfast show featuring hosts Dan Anstey, Margaux Parker and Greg Martin issued an on–air apology, it appears the damage is done, with Bennett banning Triple M indefinitely. It is also understood Parker – the wife of Broncos great Corey – also phoned Bennett to apologise personally. Triple M are the NRL's broadcast rights holders, but any interview with the South Sydney coach is now off the table. In the astonishing mock interview, Martin and Margaux fired a series of 'questions' at Bennett, with his answer always the same – 'I knew someone would ask that question'. They used a recording of Bennett giving that response to a journalist on July 26 when he was asked if he feels the Rabbitohs are wooden–spoon candidates following their defeat against Cronulla. Some of the 'questions' listeners heard included: why he dropped NRL Immortal Wally Lewis from the Broncos in the early 1990s, why his 42–year marriage with Trish ended, if Bennett believes he resembles famed actor Clint Eastwood, and, inexplicably, how big are his current partner Dale Cage's breasts – which was posed by Parker. Bennett confirmed to News Corp he was aware of the offensive remarks about his ex–wife and current partner. 'That's personal stuff, so I'm not going to go into that,' he said. 'You talk to them (Triple M). If they want to say something about their behaviour, you talk to them, but I'm not saying anything more.' Bennett's partner Cage heard the segment live this week and called Triple M management to lodge an official complaint, according to Code Sports. South Sydney CEO Blake Solly said it was a 'private matter for Wayne to deal with' before adding he 'has the club's total support'. Bennett met Cage in 2013 while he was coaching the Newcastle Knights and she was working with club doctor Neil Halpin. He confirmed the relationship began while he was still married in the biography The Wolf You Feed by journalist Andrew Webster. At the time, Bennett was regarded as a family man known to glowingly praise his longstanding wife Trish. She was the primary carer of their two adult disabled children back in Brisbane while he spent six years coaching 1076km away in Wollongong and later Newcastle, with Trish's blessing. 'Trish and the family didn't want to see me staying at home and not being happy and not being challenged. Like myself, they would naturally prefer me to be at home, but they were happy for me to go (to the Dragons and Newcastle) because they knew it's what I wanted to do,' Bennett recalled in 2014. 'We just got on with life as a family and as a unit we have made it work.' The stoush with Triple M comes after former Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds recently revealed a heart–to–heart with Bennett in 2020 helped save his marriage. 'It was a really tough part of my life. He [Bennett] is very good at reading the room,' the Broncos playmaker and father of four recalled on the Inside Ball podcast. 'I wasn't giving out too much and he grabbed me aside one day (at Rabbitohs training) and said: 'What's up?' 'I opened up to Wayne and he then regularly checked in with me, which was good. 'It was hard to navigate through that time and if I didn't have that guidance from Wayne, I don't know where I would have been.'

Bring Her Back review – Philippou brothers bring all manner of scares to creepy custody battle

Are Danny and Michael Philippou the new kings of horror? Well, they may be the new princes or the new marquesses of horror anyway; I can't think of anyone who outranks them. The Philippou brothers grabbed audiences by the throat with their debut Talk to Me, and now they're back with a macabre new adventure set on their home turf of suburban Adelaide in South Australia. It takes place in a bizarre house with a triangular empty swimming pool destined to be filled with rainwater as the film's bad weather continues into the horrible finale. Bring Her Back gives a great villainous role to Sally Hawkins and a terrifically smart debut for non-professional teen Sora Wong. It's a horror preying with hideous expertise on our protective instincts towards the vulnerable, our fear of our own vulnerability, the shame and guilt of abuse, and survivors' wretched sense of loyalty to their abusers. And the theme of blindness and visual impairment might even call to mind the unreconstructed attitudes of movies such as Wait Until Dark and Don't Look Now. Andy (Billy Barratt) and his partially sighted stepsister Piper (Wong) are orphaned when their cruel widower father dies of some kind of seizure in the shower. They are fostered by an odd woman called Laura, played by Hawkins, who is grieving the loss of her own (blind) daughter and already looking after a disturbed boy called Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips). She is creepily matey, always yelping and chirruping with forced laughter and misjudged jokes, a mask of mumsiness which slips when Andy reveals that on his 18th birthday he intends to apply for parental custody of Piper and they will move away. But his ability to do this will depend on a reference from Laura, who begins a campaign to undermine him and subtly terrorise Piper. In private, she likes to watch a certain VHS videotape – a relic whose antique oddity is endowed with something uncanny – which she has perhaps purchased from the dark web; a tape showing a group of Russian-speakers who have unusual ideas about how to deal with grief and loss … ideas that Laura wants to put into practice. The Philippou brothers have a diabolical talent, not just for the jump scare but the slo-mo cringe-scare, the squirm-scare and the writhe-in-your-seat scare. It is brought to the fore in a grisly scene in which Laura insists on coming to the funeral of Piper and Andy's father and impresses on Andy the need to carry out certain healing traditions and observances towards the dead of which he was (understandably) unaware. The whole thing is underscored by barnstorming performances from Wong and Hawkins. Bring Her Back is in UK and Irish cinemas from 1 August.

Rose Byrne reveals the desperate lengths she went to for Hollywood fame

Rose Byrne might be a Hollywood A-lister these days, but that certainly hasn't always been the case. The Australian actress, 46, has revealed the 'desperate' lengths she went to in order to achieve fame in Tinsel Town. Rose appeared on Nova's Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie Show on Thursday alongside her Platonic co-star Seth Rogen, to chat about the anticipated new season of the hit Apple TV+ series. It wasn't long before the conversation turned to some of the Bridesmaids star's earliest attempts at stardom. Rose admitted that she wasn't shy about trying her luck in all manner of TV fare before nabbing her first small-screen role. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Did you ever try out for Neighbours or Home and Away when you were younger?' host Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald asked the actress. 'Oh yeah, I did an ill-fated soap called Echo Point that I'm sure you're familiar with - with some wonderful actors actually, in all seriousness, that was not....' she said before trailing off. Seth then diplomatically interjected with: 'It did not have the legs.' Continuing, Rose admitted that she did, indeed, audition for both iconic soaps, and was rejected. 'Oh yeah, I auditioned for Neighbours and Home and Away... all of them,' she said. Billed as a Home and Away 'killer', Echo Point was a short-lived soap that aired on Network Ten from June to December 1995. Rose starred as 'good girl' Belinda O'Connor in the soap, alongside the likes of Tom Long, Jessica Napier, Martin Henderson and Diarmid Heidenreich. Originally airing at 7pm to combat the iconic Seven soap, Echo Point failed to resonate with audiences, finishing its one-season run in the 11.30pm graveyard slot Elsewhere in the chat, Rose admitted to sustaining a very surprising injury while in Melbourne. 'I just bent and grabbed my bag off the floor the other day in Melbourne and I got a lumbar facet sprain and I couldn't move for two days,' Rose admitted. When co-host Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli asked the star how she got off the ground, Rose replied: 'Barely. 'I was shuffled back to my room and lay in bed for two days.' Wanting to one-up his co-star, Seth also admitted to a recent malady while in the shower. 'I hurt my neck really badly shampooing my head,' he said. 'I was getting too vigorous a lather going and I hurt my neck. It hurt for two weeks.' It comes after it was announced that Rose's breakthrough 1999 Australian movie Two Hands is set to receive a sequel 25 years later. The film starred a 19-year-old Heath and Rose in a hilarious and confronting gangster story which has developed a cult following over the years. It was written and directed by Aussie filmmaker Gregor Jordan, who recently told The Sydney Morning Herald he had finished writing a sequel. 'We have a script that I think is really good. It brings it into the modern day,' Jordan began. 'If we'd tried to do a sequel five years later, it probably wouldn't have worked, but 25 years later is the right time.'
