BPMB provides financing facility for second phase of Lundu Beach Resort
KUCHING: Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd (BPMB) has formalised a strategic financing partnership with Pangolin Resort Sdn Bhd (PRSB) to support the development of the Lundu Beach Resort in Sarawak.
The initiative underscores BPMB's continued commitment in support of the tourism industry to promote Malaysia as a world-class destination and to enhance the country's competitiveness in the global tourism market.
Under this partnership, BPMB is extending a RM33.87 million Tawarruq Asset Financing Facility for Phase 2 of the Lundu Beach Resort, which will include the construction of 72 hotel units and 28 villas, along with a banquet hall, outdoor dining space, and restaurant.
The project is expected to elevate Sarawak's hospitality offerings and contribute to regional economic development.
The resort, strategically located in Lundu, is expected to deliver meaningful socio-economic impact to the area, including the creation of 69 employment opportunities—49 during construction and 20 during operations—as well as generating spillover economic effects to nearby towns and small local businesses.
The development may benefit up to 300 people in the community, according to estimates.
The financing facility was assessed using BPMB's internal MIND framework (Measuring Impact on National Development), which evaluates alignment with the 12th Malaysia Plan and broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations.
The project scored highly under the Development Impact Index, particularly for its potential to stimulate job creation, promote sustainable tourism, and uplift the local community.
BPMB head of corporate banking and advisory Wee Yee Tat said, 'This project aligns with our mandate, and more importantly, it addresses key socio-economic goals by creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the standard of living in Lundu.'
PRSB director Datuk Seri Thomas Lau said, 'We are honoured to work alongside BPMB in bringing this vision to life.
'The Lundu Beach Resort will not only showcase the beauty of Sarawak's coastline, but also serve as a catalyst to boost tourism, stimulate local economic activity, and create meaningful opportunities for the surrounding communities.'
With this collaboration, BPMB continues to deliver impact capital into projects that not only generate economic value but also uplift local communities and strengthen the nation's tourism ecosystem.

DOSM elected to chair Asean statistics working group for 2026–2027
PUTRAJAYA: The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has been unanimously elected as chair of the Working Group on Data Sharing, Analysis, Dissemination and Communication of Statistics (WGDSA) for the 2026–2027 term. The decision was made at the 23rd Meeting of the WGDSA (WGDSA23), which began yesterday in Putrajaya. The two-day meeting brought together 18 delegates from Asean Member States (AMS) and the Asean Secretariat (Aseanstats), with Myanmar participating virtually. The gathering aimed to strengthen regional statistical cooperation, enhance data transparency and improve communication strategies under the ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS). Chief statistician and ACSS15 chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said in a statement today that the appointment reflected the continued trust of member states in Malaysia's active role in advancing the Asean statistical system. He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity and resilience in the regional statistical ecosystem, stressing the importance of accessible, reliable and timely statistics in supporting evidence-based policymaking and Asean's integration and development goals. "As we move forward together, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that statistics are communicated clearly, shared meaningfully and used effectively to support Asean's progress. "Malaysia, as Asean chair for 2025, remains committed to promoting statistical cooperation, capacity building and innovation across the region," he said. Discussions at the meeting focused on the implementation of the WGDSA Multi-Year Plan (MYP), expansion of the Asean Statistical Indicators – Consolidated Template (ASI-CT), integration of Application Programming Interfaces (API) for real-time data access, and increased statistical outreach through initiatives such as the Asean Virtual Learning Academy and targeted awareness programmes. Mohd Uzir said the meeting also discussed enhancements to the ASICT data collection template for indicators in areas such as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the manufacturing sector, inflation, population and employment. A key milestone of WGDSA23 was the presentation of Malaysia's preliminary 2025 Action Plan for the Awareness Initiative - an ACSS Annual Priority under the Asean Economic Community (AEC) reporting framework. "The initiative was previously endorsed by the Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) at the 14th Session of the Asean Community Statistical System (ACSS14) in Laos. "As the lead country, Malaysia announced the formation of a dedicated Task Force on Statistical Awareness and Engagement under WGDSA to spearhead its implementation," he said. ASEAN TVET Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue highlights three key enablers
MELAKA: The ASEAN Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue (ATC 4th RPD) has highlighted three fundamental enablers for advancing the sector. The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) said the three key enablers are effective education and training, meeting industry demands for skilled labour, and improving socio-economic standards. The ministry, in collaboration with the National TVET Council (MTVET), is organising the two-day dialogue themed 'TVET for Rural and Regional Advancement' here, with the main objective of developing comprehensive, actionable strategies and policies to enhance the access, quality, and relevance of TVET, aligned with rural development priorities and inclusive growth. 'The ATC 4th RPD is expected to produce practical recommendations and conclusions to support the development and alignment of national TVET systems with regional aspirations. 'It will also strengthen the role of the ASEAN TVET Council as a key platform for cooperation, coordination, and policy integration across ASEAN,' it said in a statement today. The statement said the dialogue is held in conjunction with the National TVET Day 2025 celebration, which runs from today until Friday, and Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025. The dialogue is supported by the ASEAN Secretariat, the German government under the Regional Cooperation on Labour Market Policy and TVET for Twin Transition in ASEAN (RECOTwin) programme, and the Australian government through the Aus4ASEAN Digital Transformation and Future Skills programme. 'The ATC 4th RPD aims to foster regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic discussions on the role of TVET as a catalyst for the socio-economic transformation of rural and marginalised communities. 'The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who underscored TVET's critical role in driving inclusivity and sustainability, and Malaysia's aspiration to equip the workforce with relevant skills for a dynamic labour market to boost economic growth and social equity,' the statement added. The dialogue features 29 expert panellists from ASEAN member states, Australia, and UNESCO, comprising policymakers, government officials, industry players, and TVET educators. The hybrid event is being attended by over 300 participants, both in person and online.
