Zawya12-03-2025
The Engineering Export Council of Egypt (EECE), led by Sherif El-Sayyad, announced that engineering exports increased by 42% in January 2025, reaching $526.2m compared to $371.4m in January 2024. El-Sayyad emphasized that this strong start to the year reinforces the council's vision to achieve a historic milestone, surpassing the $6bn mark in exports for the first time.
He highlighted the importance of reducing production costs and deepening local manufacturing to sustain growth and attract foreign investments in strategic industries. He also stressed the need for incentive packages to encourage investment in advanced technology components with high import costs, while calling for the establishment of accreditation laboratories and the introduction of tax and customs incentives for importing essential raw materials and production components.
The EECE's monthly report showed strong growth across several key engineering sectors in January 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Cable exports increased by 72.8%, while electrical appliances saw a 64.9% rise. Automotive components recorded a 9.5% increase, and home appliances grew by 17.1%. Electrical and electronic industries expanded by 27.3%, while ship and boat exports surged by 284.6%. Machinery and equipment exports also posted strong growth, rising by 65.9%.
May Helmy, Executive Director of the Engineering Export Council, underscored the vital role of engineering exports in driving economic growth, creating new job opportunities, and achieving national development targets. She stressed that the council's strategy is focused on enhancing the quality of exported products to maintain the current upward trend. She also reaffirmed the EECE's commitment to promoting Egyptian engineering industries globally through participation in international trade fairs and conferences, organizing buyer missions, and launching overseas trade delegations.
Egyptian engineering exports saw increased demand across multiple international markets. In Europe, key destinations included Slovakia, the United Kingdom, Turkey, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Georgia, Italy, and the Czech Republic. In Asia, Saudi Arabia was the top importer of Egyptian engineering products, followed by the UAE, Iraq, Jordan, China, and Lebanon. Several African markets, including Algeria, Morocco, Central Africa, Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius, and Madagascar, also saw a rise in Egyptian engineering imports. Additionally, exports to the Americas increased, particularly to Uruguay and Mexico.
With sustained growth and a widening global footprint, Egypt's engineering sector is on track for an unprecedented export performance, reinforcing its position as a key player in international markets.

South Africa's auto sector hit by job losses and company closures

Low domestic sales of locally made cars, an influx of imports and low levels of local content have led to 12 company closures and over 4,000 job losses in the South African motor industry over two years, the trade minister said on Wednesday. South Africa, a market long dominated by the likes of Volkswagen, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz , saw sales of 515,850 locally produced cars last year, far below the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784,509, Minister Parks Tau told delegates at an auto parts conference. Some 64% of vehicles sold in South Africa are imports. Additionally, localisation - the level of local assembly, labour and components - remains stagnant at 39%, well short of the 60% target, while U.S. tariffs now significantly impact the country's 28.7 billion rand ($1.64 billion) automotive exports, he added. "These pressures have triggered 12 company closures and over 4,000 job losses in two years," Tau said. South Africa's automotive industry employs 115,000 people directly, with over 80,000 in component manufacturing alone. Experts say that with the U.S. tariffs on cars and parts that were imposed from April, jobs are under threat as some companies lose contracts in America. On Tuesday, South Africa submitted a revised offer for a trade deal with Washington, in an effort to lower the 30% tariff U.S. President Donald Trump imposed last week. To help respond to the challenges the industry is facing, an incentive scheme for local manufacturing now includes electric vehicles and associated components, Tau said. "Localisation is not merely policy compliance, it is existential. A 5% increase in local content would unlock 30 billion rand in new procurement, dwarfing the 4.4 billion rand U.S. export market," Tau said. International manufacturers such as Stellantis and China's Chery are looking to localise production in South Africa, with Stellantis ready to break ground in the Eastern Cape province. Egypt: State-owned Holdipharma targets $371mln in revenues for FY2025/2026

Egypt - Mohamed El-Shimy, Minister of Public Enterprises, affirmed that the pharmaceutical industry is a vital pillar of health security and a key driver of the national economy, stressing that its development within the ministry's affiliated companies is a strategic priority. His remarks came while chairing the General Assembly meeting of the Holding Company for Pharmaceuticals (Holdipharma) to approve the budget plan for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. During the meeting, Ashraf El-Khouly, CEO and Managing Director of Holdipharma, presented the board's report, which included the draft budget for the coming fiscal year. The plan targets consolidated revenues of EGP 18bn, a 131% increase compared to 2023/2024, and net profits of EGP 3.4bn—up 343%. The report also noted the growth in the market value of the group's listed companies. The meeting, attended by Board Chair Ahmed Hegazy, members of the General Assembly, and representatives of the Central Auditing Organisation, marked the final approval of all holding companies' and subsidiaries' budgets for the new fiscal year. Minister El-Shimy explained that the ministry is working to localise and deepen pharmaceutical manufacturing, transfer and apply the latest global production technologies, and enhance product quality to strengthen competitiveness in local, regional, and international markets. Development plans include upgrading production lines, increasing manufacturing capacity, adhering to the highest standards of sustainability, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ensuring occupational health and safety, and optimising the use of assets, capacities, and resources. He added that human capital development is central to achieving these targets, through specialised training and qualification programmes that encourage innovation and advance scientific research, alongside fostering partnerships with the private sector both domestically and internationally. These measures aim to increase production and export capacity, and open new markets to bolster the competitiveness of the national industry. El-Shimy stressed that reforming the financial structures of subsidiary companies is a top priority to ensure sustainable profitability and secure the resources needed for production expansion. He underscored the importance of updating organisational structures and management systems to meet current needs, while accelerating the implementation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to improve operational efficiency and ensure precise oversight of resources and production. The presentation also highlighted major projects and investment opportunities, including the production of biological drugs, insulin and biosimilars, dry powder inhalation tablets, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and hormones. It outlined partnerships with leading international companies, such as US-based Dawah, to produce and export products including ampoules, nutritional supplements, sterile injections, and sterile ophthalmic preparations. El-Shimy concluded by stressing the integration of economic, social, and environmental dimensions to ensure comprehensive sustainability in the company's activities. He called for promoting professional conduct, improving the work environment, and raising performance standards across all administrative and executive levels. He affirmed that the Ministry of Public Enterprises Sector is moving decisively towards modernising and restructuring its subsidiaries, striking a balance between profitability and sustainability, and enhancing Egypt's competitiveness regionally and globally. Holdipharma, he added, aims to achieve regional leadership in the sector, positioning Egypt as an advanced hub for pharmaceutical production and exports, meeting domestic needs while expanding into international markets. © 2025 Daily News Egypt.
