Metro area law enforcement soon keeping watch from above thanks to drone program
We know cameras are watching us almost everywhere we go on the roads, even reading our license plates.
Soon, law enforcement in the metro Atlanta area could be watching us from above.
Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach was in DeKalb County, where the Dunwoody Police Department is the first to launch new high-tech drones for public safety.
'These aren't the same drones we could buy, or other departments may take to a scene, there's a drone on the roof here that becomes a true first responder,' Dunwoody Police Sgt. Michael Cheek said.

The drones liftoff from a launch pad and docking station on the roof of Dunwoody's city hall.
For the police department, they're new eyes in the sky, controlled just two floors down in the department's real time crime center.
'We just have to have two miles of airspace visibility,' Cheek said.

The drone program, flying from the start of 2025, is a first in Georgia. It comes from Flock Safety as part of the company's new aviation sector.
The company also cut the ribbon on a new drone manufacturing facility in Cobb County on Wednesday and the drones are fully integrated, from 911 to Flock cameras and tag readers.
'All these different things come together to work as one,' Cheek told Channel 2 Action News.
While speaking with Gehlbach about the drone program, a call came in from just off Interstate 285.
Within a minute of launching, the drone had an accident on the highway in its sights.
The drone can even zoom in on accidents well before police arrive. It's not only faster, helping to cut down response times, but police said the drone is safer too.
Last month, when officers were called to respond to a suspect firing a gun randomly in a busy shopping area, Dunwoody police deployed the drone as officers searched on the ground.
The drone spotted the suspect, even seeing a distinct neck tattoo, and saw that it was a phone in his hand, not a gun.
'They handcuffed him, with zero incident,' Cheek said.
And with complete stealth, the drone confirmed the identity from over 300 feet in the air, almost a quarter mile away.
'To have that kind of overwatch from that far away just absolutely changes the game with safety, and how e can execute something like that for the safety of us, civilians and him,' Cheek said.
Soon, permits from the Federal Aviation Administration will allow them to fly the drone without having to have someone on the roof. Once that happens, they can launch the drones from inside, or any supervisor on patrol can fly and pilot the drone right from their patrol car.

Poundland sold for £1 and set to shut shops in restructuring
Poundland is set to shut dozens of stores after being sold for £1 to investment firm Gordon Brothers. The discount chain, known for primarily selling products for £1, had been put on the market earlier this year after a sharp downturn in trading. Poland-based Pepco Group, which has owned Poundland since 2016, said on Thursday that it completed the sale of the business for a 'nominal' fee. Sources close to the process have said this was £1. Poundland's more-than-800 stores and roughly 16,000 employees will be transferred to the ownership of Gordon Brothers, which owns brands including Laura Ashley, as a result. However, as part of the deal, Poundland is set to undergo a restructuring plan, which will go through the high court. Poundland said the details will be communicated 'in due course'. It is understood that full details of the shake-up will be sent out company creditors in the coming days. The company is expected to seek around 100 store closures and a raft of rent reductions from landlords as part of the process. As part of the restructuring plan, Pepco is set to retain a minority stake in Poundland. Last month, Poundland reported that revenues dropped by 6.5% to 985 million euros (£830 million) for the six months to March, compared with a year earlier. The brand suffered 'challenges across all categories' and had 18 net store closures over the period. Pepco said the deal will help it shift away from food and drinks, improve its revenue growth and boost its profitability. India's May palm oil imports surge 84% m/m to hit six-month high
By Rajendra Jadhav and Anmol Choubey MUMBAI (Reuters) -India's palm oil imports jumped to a six-month high in May, driven by low inventories and the tropical oil's price discount to rival soyoil and sunflower oil, which prompted refiners to boost purchases, an industry body said on Thursday. Higher imports of palm and soyoil by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could support Malaysian palm oil prices and U.S. soyoil futures. Palm oil imports rose 84% in May from April to stand at 592,888 metric tons, the highest since November 2024, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said. India imported an average of more than 750,000 tons of palm oil each month during the marketing year that ended in October 2024, the SEA said. Imports of soyoil increased 10.4% to 398,585 tons, the highest since January, and sunflower oil imports rose 1.9% to 183,555 tons, it added. Higher imports of palm oil and soyoil lifted India's total vegetable oil imports in May by 33% from a month before to 1.19 million tons, the highest since December, it said. Below-average imports from January to April reduced domestic vegetable oil stocks to 1.33 million tons by June 1, the lowest since July 2020, according to SEA data. Palm oil imports are likely to increase further in June and could rise to about 850,000 tons, as the oil is trading at a discount to soyoil, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader. Soyoil imports in June will hold steady around 400,000 tons, Patel said. India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. Vegetable oil imports are expected to pick up in the coming months as this month's duty cut will help boost demand, said a New Delhi-based trader. India halved the basic import tax on crude edible oils to 10% in a bid to reduce food prices and help the domestic refining industry.
