Odisha Crime Branch seeks TI parade, remand in Gopalpur gangrape case as probe intensifies

BERHAMPUR: Continuing its investigation into the Gopalpur beach gangrape case, the Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW & CW) of the Odisha Crime Branch on Thursday moved the Judicial Magistrate First Class (Rural) Court in Berhampur seeking permission to conduct test identification (TI) parade of the 10 accused and police remand of the six adult suspects.
Police said prime accused Pramod Nayak (23) of Hiundata village in Purushottampur, was jailed in two separate cases - attempt to murder and making bombs - a few years back. He was a BTech dropout and worked at an electronics factory in Bengaluru. He recently returned home on leave.
Pramod and other accused including four juveniles were arrested late in the night on June 15 (Sunday), a few hours after allegedly gang-raping the 20-year-old, a Plus Three student, at Gopalpur beach.
Medical examinations of the survivor and the accused were conducted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur on June 16. Blood and other samples were collected for DNA testing. On Tuesday, all the six adult accused were remanded to judicial custody while the four minors were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
Professor Sudipta Das of MKCGMCH said the test results had not arrived till late Thursday evening. She revealed that during the medical test, the rape survivor informed doctors that the accused had used condoms. This indicates that the perpetrators not only came prepared to commit the crime but also took measures to destroy evidence. Habitual offenders resort to such methods, she added.
An eight-member team of the CAW & CW led by IG S Shyni reached Berhampur on Wednesday to take charge of the probe. The team visited the crime scene and recorded statements of the survivor and her male friend, who had accompanied her to the beach. Sand samples, cigarette stubs, and other materials from the crime scene were also seized.
The incident was tagged as a Red Flag case. As per norms, forensic evidence in Red Flag cases are prioritised for examination at forensic laborotaries. (SFSL) at Bhubaneswar, confirmed FMT Professor Sudipta Das of MKCGMCH.

B.Tech student's death: Police files abetment FIR against Sharda University

An FIR has been registered against the Sharda University administration after the father of a BTech student, who recently committed suicide in his hostel room, filed a complaint alleging abetment, police said on Tuesday. A 24-year-old BTech Computer Science student of Sharda University was found dead by hanging inside his room at the HNR hostel.(Sunil Ghosh/Hindustan Times) In his complaint, the student's father alleged that the university administration did not inform the family when his son had been missing classes. A 24-year-old BTech Computer Science student of the university was found dead by hanging inside his room at the HNR hostel on Friday night. The student, a resident of Purnia in Bihar's Madhubani district, was the lone son of his father, a private company employee, and mother, a housewife. He had left a suicide note, which said he was unable to bear the pressure of studies, that he was responsible for his death and no one else is to be blamed for it. The note asked the police not to detain anyone and requested the university to refund unused fees to his parents. "My son was studying BTech in Sharda University and has been living in the HNR boys' hostel. He has not gone to college since August 2023," the father said in his complaint filed at Knowledge Park police station on Sunday. The complaint mentioned that the student had backlogs in various subjects. "The college was continuously charging fees from us. We used to get e-mails and messages regarding fees from the college, but it never informed us that Shivam was not attending the classes," the complaint said. Earlier, a university spokesperson had said that the student was enrolled in the BTech programme in 2022 and completed his first year, but struggled in the second year and failed to meet the minimum grade requirement of 5.0 CGPA to progress to the third year. "His mentor remained in touch to support him and encouraged him to participate in internships and other academic programmes," the spokesperson had said. The student was also given opportunity to improve his performance, and offered a chance to repeat the second year at reduced fees if could not, he had said. The university had expressed condolences to the student's family and confirmed that fees would be refunded and all necessary support would be given to the family in future. The family members had claimed that the student returned to college on August 2 after a religious tour to Vaishno Devi with them. He was normal at home and had not shown any sign of distress. On July 18, another second-year student from the Dental Sciences stream in the university had ended life in her hostel room. She had blamed two faculty members for her death and they were arrested.

He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment early on Friday morning due to excessive bleeding. Acting on information, Bilkhiria police registered a case against unidentified accused on charges of murder and launched an investigation. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family. The student was attacked while returning home from work. After getting down from his company bus, he was walking towards his rented room when he was stabbed. According to police, the deceased was identified as Nitesh Chandravanshi, 22, a native of Chhindwara. For the past three years, he was living on rent at Kokta in Bilkhiria along with his friend Prashant. Nitesh was pursuing a BTech final year from a private college on Raisen Road. While walking home, unidentified accused attacked him from behind with a knife. Severely injured, Nitesh managed to call his friend Prashant for help. He told him that two men on a scooter stabbed him and fled. He also clarified that he had no personal dispute with anyone. Police revealed that Nitesh suffered deep stab wounds on his back and waist. He died due to excess bleeding. The motive of the attack was not clear yet. The attack could have been an attempted robbery, though Nitesh's belongings, including his mobile phone, were not missing. His statement could not be formally recorded before his death. Bilkhiria SHO Umesh Chauhan said that a murder case has been registered against unidentified accused and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined. There were no CCTV cameras near the spot. Further investigations are ongoing. SP (Bhopal Rural) Pramod Sinha said that police are investigating the motive behind the attack.
