USA Today07-07-2025
The anticipation surrounding the 2025-26 Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team is palpable. The new head coach, Ben McCollum, is a proven winner at every stop he has been to. The roster is revamped with transfer portal talent littered up and down everywhere you look. The fans are eager to see what is in store.
That wait may not be too long as the Iowa Hawkeyes will be one of 20 teams taking part in the largest multi-team event in college basketball in 2025, The Acrisure Series. The event is set for November 25-28 and will be at the Acrsure Arena in Palm Desert, California.
The rest of the field features other Big Ten members, Washington and Minnesota, as well as in-state program Northern Iowa.
It remains unknown who the Hawkeyes will be drawing in their matchups, but the field gives Iowa an early-season look at how they could fare against potential NCAA-tournament caliber programs.
Per the official Hawkeye Sports website, the Hawkeyes have a game on Tuesday, November 25, and Wednesday, November 26.
Last year's Acrisure Series featured just four teams, consisting of TCU, Santa Clara, Washington, and Colorado State, with Washington winning the invitational.
This year's field, along with Iowa, includes Utah, Grand Canyon, Stanford, Washington, Nevada, San Jose State, Northern Iowa, San Diego, Pepperdine, Ole Miss, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Santa Clara, Colorado, San Francisco, Loyola Chicago, Tulsa, Cal Baptist, and Fresno State.

Former Oregon Duck Nikko Reed makes big-time INT in Hall of Fame Game

Football finally returned on Thursday night following a five-month long hiatus as the Los Angeles Chargers took on the Detroit Lions in the NFL's annual Hall of Fame Game. Not many starters participate in the preseason in today's league, so the matchups typically consist of young guys and players on the fringes of the roster attempting to carve out a career. This is the case for former Oregon Ducks cornerback Nikko Reed, who has reportedly been one of the biggest bright spots in Chargers training camp. He signed with Los Angeles after going undrafted this year, but he isn't letting that label hold him back or define him. Reed intercepted a pass in the first quarter during the contest against the Lions and returned it 60 yards, coming just five yards short of a score. Some defensive backs are pure gamblers, either giving up big plays or adding to their own highlight reel. This is not the case with Reed. In 13 total coverage snaps against Detroit, the former Ducks star didn't allow a single catch. He also recorded three tackles and a pass breakup to go along with his pick. According to reports from a variety of Chargers reporters, Reed has impressed all summer and has a great shot to make the team. Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio placed on injured list with strained right hamstring

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the 10-day injured list Friday after evaluations of his strained right hamstring revealed more significant issues than expected. Chourio was injured Tuesday while running the bases on a triple in the fifth inning. The move to the IL was made retroactive to Wednesday. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said the 21-year-old Chourio will likely require more than a minimum stay on the injured list. 'It won't be anytime soon,' Murphy said before the Brewers' series opener against Washington. 'He was diagnosed a little more severely than we initially thought. To what extent, I'm not exactly sure. Nor are they. We're just going to have to rehab it.' Murphy said Chourio will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection. Chourio is hitting .276 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 18 steals for Milwaukee, which entered Friday with the best record in the majors at 64-44. He was replaced on the active roster by outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who the Brewers acquired Thursday from San Diego for pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Jorge Quintana and cash. Lockridge, who hit .216 with five RBIs in 47 games with the Padres this season, was inserted into the leadoff slot Friday against the Nationals. ___ AP MLB:

Auburn's Alex McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list

Alex McPherson is receiving national attention ahead of his "comeback" season. Preseason award watch season is upon us, and one Auburn Tiger is on the radar. Alex McPherson is set to return to the field full-time after an illness sidelined him for most of the 2024 season. He has caught the attention of the Palm Beach Sports Commission as he is one of 30 kickers included on the Lou Groza Award watch list that was released Friday afternoon. McPherson was 49-of-49 on extra points and was 19-of-20 on field goals with a long of 53 yards as a freshman and sophomore during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In one game last season, he connected on all three extra point attempts while going 1-for-2 on field goals in Auburn's win at Kentucky in October. He has worked to regain strength and is poised to make a strong comeback in 2025. 'It gives me some confidence that my body can hold up, that I can trust it and not have to worry about it every step of the way like I had to last year,' McPherson said in an interview with Jeff Shearer of 'I think this is definitely one of the strongest groups in the country. We have three really strong kickers, we've got three strong punters. This group is definitely special and it's going to be something to look out for this year.' USC's Caden Chittenden, Georgia's Payton Woodring, and UAB's Jonah Delange join McPherson on the Groza watch list this season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8.
