High spirits as Hong Kong's Dragon Boat Festival kicks off amid strong winds
A tourism spot, where the Stanley International Dragon Boat Championship is taking place, was packed with racing teams and residents on Saturday morning.
'The weather today is a little windy, which may affect our performance,' said Alan Chan, team captain of the West Kowloon Cultural District's Dragon Boat team.
'Given the wind, there could be big waves when we go out to the sea later, which would affect our results. The waves were not that big when we practised. We will do our best.'
The team, joining the competition at Stanley Main Beach for the first time, said they had completed seven two-hour lessons to prepare for the event.
While some may view the weather as an obstacle, others believe it can give them a boost.

Hong Kong footballer makes Tai Po pledge, as club demand fee for any mainland China move
Hong Kong international Nicholas Benavides has pledged to never give up on his bid to win over Tai Po title-winning head coach Lee Chi-kin. The versatile left-footer has made as many appearances for the city team, six, as he has starts for Tai Po, since he joined from Sham Shui Po last summer. Rumours over a potential switch to the mainland were shut down by Lee, who said he had received no offers, but would want a transfer fee to allow Benavides to leave. 'We are a professional club and should receive a fee when a player has a contract,' Lee said. The player said he 'struggled a bit last term' but that he had pledged to keep going. 'It's about your mentality and whether you want to give up,' Benavides said. 'I won't. I always come and try to play, and will wait for my time to show the coach [I deserve to be selected]. 'He is keen for me to stay, I trust him, and am thankful for his trust. I will stay this season, fight for Tai Po, and keep working hard.' Benavides, 23, made his city team debut last October, and two months later scored in games against Mongolia and Guam. He came off the bench against both South Korea and China in this month's East Asian Championship.

Sell it like Manchester United: how Hong Kong champions aim to conquer Asia
Enterprising Hong Kong champions Tai Po have set their sights on conquering Asia, both on the field and off it. And to help achieve that, they are looking to tap into the know-how behind Manchester United's recent high-profile visit to the city. The ambitious club have enlisted Paul Kam, whose ProEvents company has staged several marquee matches across the continent over three decades, to arrange around three high-profile overseas friendly fixtures each season. Kam promoted United's tour of Malaysia and Hong Kong in May. 'We want our club to have more exposure in the Asian market,' Francis Yip, who bankrolls Tai Po alongside his wife Catherine, told the Post. Paul has connections and experience in staging matches here and overseas,' he said.

China's football team flopped in World Cup 2026 bid. Now officials launch esports version
Chinese football chiefs have revealed plans to launch a national esports team – and have been mocked by social media users who said that the body had done enough damage to the sport in the country. The Chinese Football Association (CFA) said on Monday that the team would compete in 'events organised by Fifa, the Asian Football Confederation and other organisations'. The CFA sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia that effectively ended the country's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. China have appeared at only one World Cup, all the way back in 2002, and are currently 94th in Fifa's world rankings. However, the country has dominated esports in recent years, winning four out of five gold medals at the Asian Games, with a talent pool of about 490 million users to choose from.
