Burj Khalifa to light up with the Indian flag on August 15
The tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa, will light up with the Indian flag tonight to mark Indian Independence Day in Dubai. Indian Independence Day falls on August 15 and celebrates the day it was liberated from British colonial rule. As the UAE is home to 4.36 million Indians, with 2 million alone living in Dubai, the city is celebrating in a big way, a really big way. We are sure the event will be snapped up by thousands of residents and visitors in the area and posted on social media, but if you want to check it out in person, the expected time for the flag to appear is 7:50pm on Friday, August 15. The display of the Indian flag, the world's largest LED screen, goes just beyond being an Instagram moment. Dubai: For modern Indian cuisine, head to Punjab Grill
Good Indian food is not hard to come by in Dubai — from two Michelin-starred gastronomic journeys to traditional, low-key curry spots, both are available aplenty. Punjab Grill, however, sits comfortably between these two disparate concepts. Located within Anantara Downtown, the restaurant immediately made us feel welcome and at home while still offering an elevated environment — reminiscent of some of my favourite London curry houses, where my family would go for special occasions or when my dad wanted to treat me and my siblings if my mum was out of town. The delightful waiter recommended we opt for their tasting menu, which features a series of dishes celebrating the colourful cuisines of India's vast and varied regions, each interpreted through Punjab Grill's modern lens. We began our seven-course gastronomic journey with a light amuse bouche, consisting of a cheese kulcha with chili, walnut, and dates. The meal quickly progressed to appetisers, including a decadent stuffed aloo, chili and peanut thecha and meaty dakshin shrimps served with fried idli and curry leaf podi. After this flavourful start, we moved on to the larger dishes, with highlights including lemongrass and chili tikka kebabs, raunakeen lamb seekhan, and jimikand ka seekh — each dish brighter in spices, citrus, and overall character than the last. Following this parade of meaty dishes, we enjoyed saucier curries. The paneer roulade, served on a bed of creamy butter sauce, was my favourite dish of the evening (though it wasn't an easy choice to make). This was paired with makhani saag, parsi salli chicken, roomali roti, and brun pav. By this point, we were understandably full, but there's always room for dessert. We were presented with an array of Indian sweet treats, including kulfi, saffron falooda, and a rose and khus granita. This dining experience was hard to fault, with an array of decadent yet fresh flavours and bright interpretations of classic regional dishes. Hero dish: The paneer roulade was a fun take on one of my absolute favourites — 9/10 Senses: While feeling truly at ease, it still felt like a magical, flavoursome culinary journey — 8/10 Menu curation: Make sure you go hungry to enjoy the tasting menu! — 8/10 Service: The service was great, truly welcoming — 8/10 The details: 050 194 1107 KT Luxe

Independence Day 2025: Bollywood stars share patriotic posts, join outrage over stray dogs
This Indian Independence Day, Bollywood celebrities lit up social media with a flood of patriotic wishes, tricolour-filled photos, and heartfelt messages to mark the occasion. But that wasn't the only kind of post dominating timelines — some stars have also used the day to spotlight a very different cause: voicing their outrage over the recent Supreme Court order to move all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters. The verdict recently sparked nationwide protests, with animal lovers across India taking to social media to condemn the move. Amidst the growing outrage, several actors have lent their voices to the cause, sharing adoption appeals, strong statements, and calls for compassion. Actor Raveena Tandon marked the day with a pointed post: 'Freedom for all. #delhincrindies . When the authorities fail. There is always a fall guy. Inefficiency / corruption has led to this disaster.' She paired her message with the quote, 'the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Raveena Tandon (@officialraveenatandon) Echoing that sentiment, Sonali Bendre wrote, 'Independence Day reminds us - freedom should not be selective.' Akshay Kumar posted an Instagram update featuring beach clean-up workers, saying, 'Freedom feels brighter when we care for the ground beneath our feet. Was enjoying beachside volleyball when I met these real-life heroes keeping our beaches clean… all smiles, all heart.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jolly Mishra - Asli Jolly from Kanpur (@akshaykumar) Priyanka Chopra shared a video of the Indian flag fluttering in the wind, wishing fans a happy Independence Day. War 2 star Hrithik Roshan penned an empowering note: 'Today, we celebrate the strength, freedom, and courage that resides in all of us. Happy Independence Day, everyone!' Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut shared a video of herself waving the tricolour, speaking about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Red Fort address and the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, with the following caption: 'Happy Independence Day.'
