
Google Home app update adds new roles to let friends and kids control your smart home
Until now, inviting relatives or friends to your Google Home setup meant they could do almost anything. They could adjust routines, remove devices, and even invite others. For many, this all-or-nothing approach created unnecessary worry that someone might change settings by accident or make changes they shouldn't.
The new Member role limits access to daily tasks. For example, Members can view security cameras, turn lights on and off, and play music on connected speakers. They won't see household settings, can't remove devices, and don't have permission to invite others either. It's a role designed for people who need basic control but don't need to run the whole setup.
Households with Admin roles have full control of all the smart devices, services, and users in their smart home. Admins can also grant Members extra privileges by giving them Settings access, which allows them to control devices and manage the whole smart home. Admins can also enable Activity access for Members so they can view device history and see recent events, like the footage of who came to deliver the order.
Setting up roles is simple. In the Google Home app, open the settings for your household and select 'Invite home member'. From there you can choose an Admin or Member before sending an email invitation. Once that person accepts it, they can start using the app according to their assigned role. You can also change someone's role later or remove them if needed.
Google is also making it easier to add a child under 13 to the Home app. If you create a Google account for your child through Family Link and add them to your family group, you can invite them directly as a Member. Earlier, this process involved extra steps with Family Link, Google Home, or Assistant settings to link your child's voice and permissions. With this update, it's simpler to give kids limited access without switching between different apps.
The update is coming in steps and may take a few weeks to reach everyone. If you don't see the new roles yet, update the app or check your household settings. Google says these roles work with all devices that use the Home app, including Nest and other brands. With clearer roles and simple controls, it's easier for families and guests to share access and decide who can use what in the smart home.

Google's best tool yet now turns your content into a video presentation
NotebookLM is no ordinary digital notebook. It doesn't have pages, even virtual ones. You don't just drop some info into it and move on. That's because NotebookLM doesn't just organise your information. Thanks to AI smarts under the hood, it 'understands' what you feed it. This means it can help you summarise information and even deliver insights and connections between ideas. To find NotebookLM, well, just Google it. Sign in with your Google account and you're in. There's an app as well, but I'd recommend ignoring it for now, except for lining up stuff to listen to, because it's missing all the best features. I've been using NotebookLM for a few months and I can't believe the free tier gives you access to almost everything. NotebookLM Plus, which comes with a paid subscription to Gemini and Google's storage plan, increases the token limit but delivers essentially the same experience. How to use it You need no tech know-how to use this fascinating platform. Click the plus sign and you'll see a three-pane interface called Sources, Chat, Studio. It all starts with Sources, which you use to add content. Sticking to one subject, add files from your own device or cloud storage. You can feed it PDFs, Google Doc files, YouTube video links, website links, notes, text files and images in some formats. But don't give it junk – use quality content. You can add up to 50 pieces per notebook and you can have 100 notebooks on the free tier. The content you feed it stays in the cloud but is private to you. You can share notebooks with others, but only by intention and with a link. Unlike general-purpose LLMs such as Gemini and ChatGPT, it isn't prone to hallucinations and sycophancy. There's also a Discover Sources feature that lets you specify what you're looking for and it serves up links you can add to your collection of sources. But be warned, it can often contain sub-par content so you have to vet each one. Where the magic happens The magic begins when you finish uploading your content and move on to the other tabs — Chat and Studio. This is where you can 'interact' with your content using the chatbot. What's great about this is that AI already seems capable of seeing patterns and connections that humans can't. This means it can give you insights and even advice. From these two panes, you can get FAQs, briefing docs, notes and study some point Google added mind maps. These are flow charts of your content, dividing it into subtopics and further subtopics, expanding as you click. This lets you see exactly how the content is organised, idea-wise. Clicking each box in the map takes you to that chunk of content. It's a beautiful structure that you can use for clarity, re-organisation, and insights. You can even use this to plan a presentation or training, to write a paper or book or to quiz students. Another extremely powerful feature is Audio Overview, which we've written about before. It turns your content into a podcast featuring two AI hosts. You can specify whether you want it short, medium or long, and even ask the AI hosts to focus on specific aspects using the Customise box. You can also use an experimental feature to interrupt the hosts and 'join' the podcast by asking a question. Again, this podcast is private to you by default. Video killed the radio star On 29 July Google added the much-anticipated Video Overview feature in the redesigned Studio section. This generates a set of presentation slides with a voiceover by an AI host. Here, too, you can choose what you want the AI to focus on. Video Overviews will apparently feature different formats in the future but even as they are, their potential use for remote training is obvious. It'll be interesting to see how else users put this feature to recently partnered with content sources such as The Economist to start a feature called Featured Notebooks, the first eight of which have appeared in the interface. These high-quality notebooks show how it's done, and can be queried deeply for insights. We recommend you try them before creating your own notebooks. NotebookLM might be Google's coolest AI tool yet: Here are 7 features you'll actually want to use
Google has been aggressive with its AI launches this year and has kept OpenAI and others in the AI field on their toes with the latest Gemini model announcements. However, Google's AI strategy is not just about bringing newer and newer features to Gemini. There are other AI-powered products the tech giant is working on quietly in the background. One Google AI tool that almost always slips under the radar is NotebookLM, the company's research and note-taking tool, which continues to earn praise on social media. NotebookLM first started under the codename 'Project Tailwind' inside Google before the company unveiled it at the I/O 2023 conference. While the AI tool received great reviews from users, Google's focus on Gemini meant that NotebookLM didn't always have the company's full attention. This year, however, things have changed for good. Google has not only announced an Android and iOS app for NotebookLM in May but has also introduced more novel features like video overviews. Project Tailwind In case you don't know about NotebookLM, here's a look at its top features. Unlike a traditional chatbot like Gemini or ChatGPT, users have the ability to upload various types of sources in their 'Notebook' in the app. These sources can include PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, website links, YouTube videos, audio files, and markdown files. The uploaded content then acts as the knowledge base for NotebookLM, which the AI analyzes to answer user queries in natural language. Since NotebookLM does not rely on generic or external information like other AI chatbots, it stays grounded in context and reduces the chances of hallucinations or factual errors. Users are not limited to a single source in NotebookLM. They can upload multiple file formats together, allowing the AI to pull information across different types of content and provide more informed summaries and responses. NotebookLM goes beyond basic summarisation. It can generate insights, identify trends, and suggest new ideas by drawing connections across the documents uploaded by the user. NotebookLM is an excellent study companion. It can summarise lengthy PDFs or slides and generate FAQs, quizzes, key terms, and more from the material. Users can also create and organise manual notes within the notebook. This helps students revisit topics by reviewing both AI-generated and personal notes while using the in-built study tools for better understanding. Perhaps the standout feature of NotebookLM is its ability to turn dry or complex topics—like a product guide or a policy document—into audio overviews. These are styled like a two-person podcast, making the content more engaging. Imagine uploading Plato's Republic or Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy and listening to it as a podcast-style dialogue. Audio overviews in NotebookLM Much like the audio overviews, Google recently rolled out video overviews for NotebookLM. This feature converts source material into AI-narrated slideshows or explainer videos. The AI pulls in images, diagrams, quotes, and figures from the original content. Users can also add custom visuals to highlight key points more effectively. NotebookLM currently supports over 80 languages, including several Indian ones such as Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Maithili, Oriya, Punjabi, and Tamil. Users can interact with the assistant in these languages, upload content written in them, and even generate audio overviews natively.

Microsoft Ends Windows 11 SE: Chromebook Rival to Be Retired by 2026
Microsoft has decided to pull the plug on Windows 11 SE, marking the end of its latest attempt to compete with Google's Chromebooks in classrooms. The lightweight operating system, which debuted five years ago, was aimed at the education sector with affordable laptops designed to keep schools from shifting to Chrome OS. 'Support for Windows 11 SE — including software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes — will end in October 2026,' Microsoft confirmed in an updated support article highlighted by 'While your device will continue to work, we recommend transitioning to a device that supports another edition of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security.' Unlike the main Windows 11, Windows 11 SE will not receive the upcoming 25H2 update. Devices will remain on the 24H2 version until support officially ends. Over the years, brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo, and Positivo have offered laptops running Windows 11 SE. Microsoft even rolled out its own budget-friendly Surface Laptop SE at just $249 back in 2021. This is not the first time Microsoft has tried to break Chrome OS's hold in schools. The earlier Windows 10 S Mode also limited installations to Microsoft Store apps — but with few apps available, it only left users frustrated. Windows 11 SE followed a similar restrictive model, pushing schools towards Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and tightly controlling which traditional win32 apps could run. Microsoft's decision reflects shifting trends in the education market. Just last year, Gartner noted that Chromebooks were 'losing market share due to their limited customer base and inferior build quality.' Chromebook shipments have dropped since 2022, and this year's PC upgrades appear focused on refreshing Windows 11 devices rather than switching to Chrome OS.
