Patriots Have 5 Wide Receiver Spots Locked Down Ahead Of Preseason Week 2
The Patriots dominated in their first preseason game against the Commanders, and it would be nice to see a similar performance in preseason Week 2. Most of the starter spots and key reserves are already locked down, but there is still plenty to be sorted out at the bottom of the roster.
One of the position groups that will come down to the wire is the wide receivers. We've known that Stefon Diggs, Pop Douglas, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams are locks for a while now, but there may be a fifth receiver who can now officially be considered a lock.
Evan Lazar of Patriots.com recently published his 10 takeaways from joint practices, and an entire paragraph was dedicated to the receiver position. Lazar thinks Kayshon Boutte is clearly the fifth receiver after an impressive summer.
'Five wide receivers appear to be clubhouse leaders for roster spots: Stefon Diggs, Pop Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins and Williams,' said Lazar. Of course, the team will likely keep six receivers, which means there's only one spot available.
'After that, Javon Baker and undrafted rookie Efton Chism III have separated into their own tier as roster candidates,' Lazar explained. 'Although he flashed as a receiver on day two, Baker's push is mostly coming from adding special teams to his repertoire, while Chism has become a favorite target for backup QB Joshua Dobbs. It'll be interesting to see if the Patriots keep both Baker and Chism on the initial roster. '
The team COULD decide to keep seven receivers, though, and it wouldn't be surprising.
'It's not unheard of to carry seven receivers. In fact, the Pats carried seven initially last season.'
Chism is likely the favorite to land the sixth spot for now, as Lazar also said Chism was the best receiver on the second-team offense in practice this week. There's a good case to be made for Baker as well after Mike Vrabel praised the UCF product's performance against the Commanders.

Nordi Mukiele joins Sunderland from PSG
France international fullback Nordi Mukiele (27) has joined Sunderland AFC from Ligue 1 side PSG, both clubs have announced. The former RB Leipzig defender has signed a four-year deal with the Black Cats. Sunderland and PSG reportedly reached an agreement worth €12m for the transfer of Mukiele, according to RMC Sport. He will wear the No. 20 shirt for Regis Le Bris' Black Cats. Mukiele was expected to leave PSG this summer considering he's not highly regarded by Luis Enrique. The Spaniard sanctioned Mukiele's season-long loan to Bayer Leverkusen last season. He featured 45 times for PSG. Despite PSG's over-reliance on right-back Achraf Hakimi, and the Moroccan international's expected absence for the AFCON, the Laval Academy product was deemed surplus to requirements in the French capital as Warren Zaïre-Emery and João Neves can fill at right-back. 'He's had a variety of experiences in Europe, including in the Champions League, and now he's motivated to show his ability for Sunderland AFC in the Premier League', said Sunderland's Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman. 'We're delighted to complete this deal.' GFFN | Bastien Cheval

Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio equals Shilton record for most games played
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio has equalled the record held by former England international Peter Shilton for most competitive appearances in men's football, playing in his 1,390th match in a Brazilian league game on Saturday. The 44-year-old, part of the Fluminense team that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States, started Fluminense's 2-1 win over Fortaleza in Brazil's Serie A to move level with Shilton. "I have to thank everyone who is part of my life, my father, my mother, my sisters, my friends, my wife... I try to be a good human being. The important thing is to help my team-mates. I am grateful, but without God nothing would be possible," said Fabio. He would become the outright record holder if he plays against Colombian side America de Cali in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana last-16 tie on Tuesday. Fabio began his career in 1997, the same year that Shilton retired. Former England goalkeeper Shilton himself considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. Fabio has spent his entire career in Brazil, winning the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record-equalling outing against Fortaleza was his 234th match for Fluminense. prb/ma/mw/bsp
