Environmental Quality Order 2025 enforcement begins today
The Department of Environment (DOE) confirmed the enforcement today, marking a significant step in streamlining environmental protection efforts.
DOE director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar explained that delegating powers to multiple agencies will enhance efficiency in addressing environmental violations.
He cited the success of recent operations, stating, 'The effectiveness of this approach can be seen in the implementation of two series of Op Hazard, where with the cooperation of various departments and agencies, we managed to seize e-waste worth over RM66 million.'
The new order consolidates six previous regulations to simplify enforcement and accelerate on-ground actions. Agencies granted authority under the order include the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, Health Ministry, Marine Department, Fisheries Department, Fire and Rescue Department, and selected local authorities and corporations.
To ensure smooth implementation, guidelines and specialised training will be provided to all involved agencies. This will clarify their responsibilities and jurisdictional limits, preventing overlaps or gaps in enforcement. - Bernama

Perak KPDN busts LPG syndicate, six detained
BATU GAJAH: The Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has busted an illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) decanting operation, detaining a 35-year-old local man and five Myanmar nationals believed to be his workers. The raid, conducted yesterday under Ops Gasak 2025, was the result of a week-long intelligence operation targeting suspected misuse of controlled goods. KPDN director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said officers found 1,899 LPG cylinders, weighing 14kg each, at the premises. "We seized all 1,899 cylinders, comprising 871 filled and 1,028 empty units," he said, adding that the total seizure amounted to 18,194kg of LPG, with an estimated market value of RM66,508.60. Kamalludin said that decanting is the illegal process of transferring LPG from subsidised 14kg cylinders into other containers, often to be sold at higher, non-subsidised rates for commercial use. The premises had no valid licences or documents under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. He said a 35-year-old local man, believed to be the owner, was detained along with five Myanmar nationals, who were suspected to be workers. The syndicate reportedly sourced subsidised 14kg LPG cylinders from wholesalers across Perak and other states. The gas was transferred to bulk tanks, from which lorries would refill and deliver to commercial clients, such as factories and hotels. Kamalludin said the price gap between the subsidised rate of RM1.90 per kg and the market ceiling price of about RM5 per kg created a lucrative opportunity for the syndicate, which sold to industries at slightly below market rates. He said the syndicate had only been operating for about a month before the authorities intervened, adding that this was one of the largest LPG-related raids in Perak this year. Individuals found guilty of such offences could face fines of up to RM1 million, three years' imprisonment, or both. Corporate offenders may be fined up to RM2 million for a first offence and RM5 million for repeat offences. KPDN's commitment to curbing the illegal distribution and misuse of controlled goods would continue under Ops Gasak 2025.

13MP: Security Sector, Pillar Of National Stability And Progress
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) proves the government's commitment to making security the main pillar of the country's stability and progress, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the large fund would drive various important initiatives including the modernisation of security operations and improving the welfare of frontline personnel. "With the allocation of RM51 billion to the security sector, this is a clear signal that the government recognises security as a pillar of the country's stability and progress," he said in a statement today. He also expressed appreciation for the government's serious emphasis on the welfare of security personnel, including the provision of quarters for them, involving more than 82,000 units in various phases of construction and renovation. "The provision of 1,368 new Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) quarters and 3,088 Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) quarters has been completed, plus another 8,501 units are being built and 69,141 existing quarters are being renovated, which is a meaningful step in safeguarding the well-being of personnel and their families," he said. He said the ongoing efforts in the 13MP to improve infrastructure, facilities and support for security personnel are very welcome and deserve to be praised because they pave the way for the excellent performance of the personnel. "We cannot expect our security forces to serve efficiently and dedicatedly if their basic needs such as comfortable housing, a conducive environment and social need are neglected," he said. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry also welcomed the government's efforts to modernise the country's immigration system through the National Integrated Immigration System and the use of advanced technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) which is deemed timely in facing current security challenges. "This approach enables the national security forces to function efficiently, responsively and strategically in addressing current challenges as well as increasing the effectiveness of security control at land and maritime borders, especially in facing geopolitical tensions and regional security issues such as in the South China Sea," he said.

Over Half A Million Tonnes Of E-waste Processed As At June 2025, DOE Wants Tougher Control
PUTRAJAYA, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Department of Environment (DOE) recorded 536,709.04 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste or e-waste processed by licensed premises from January 2021 to June 2025. Environment director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said e-waste is increasing in line with the widespread use of digital devices. "If e-waste is not managed properly and disposed of carelessly, it can have major implications for human health and the environment. In this regard, DOE has implemented various initiatives to improve e-waste management, including expanding licensed e-waste recovery facilities and there are 128 recovery facilities nationwide to date," he said in a statement here today. He said other initiatives included strengthening public awareness campaigns to promote the safe disposal of used electrical equipment and increasing enforcement against unlicensed e-waste management through two special operations, namely Ops Hazard, which were carried out with 351 legal actions taken under the Environmental Quality Act (EQA) 1974. "DOE calls on the community and industry to be responsible in managing e-wastes in an environmentally friendly manner by channeling them to legal recovery facilities," he said. In addition, Wan Abdul Latiff said the haze issue was also a major focus because it also had a serious health impact on the community. According to him, the DOE constantly monitors the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings through 68 air quality monitoring stations nationwide every hour over 24 hours through the Environmental Quality Data Centre (EDC) in Putrajaya. "At the international level, Malaysia continues to work with neighbouring countries through the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution to coordinate prevention and mitigation actions for land and forest fires in the region.
