Social enterprises across Wales are being encouraged to celebrate their impact and enter the 2025 Social Business Wales Awards, which are now officially open for entries.
Delivered by the Social Business Wales programme, the annual awards recognise the most inspiring and innovative social enterprises in Wales – organisations that are making a real difference to communities, the environment, and the economy.
This year, categories include:
• One to Watch – for emerging enterprises less than two years old • Innovation of the year – for creative enterprises developing new products and services • Environmental social enterprise of the year • Social enterprise building diversity, inclusion, equity and justice award • Community-based social enterprise – a place-based organisation making a big impact
• Wales social enterprise of the year
There's also a new 'Women's champion of the year' category, and a social impact award which will honour an organisation which brilliantly proves its impact through data and powerful storytelling.
The 2024 Social Business Wales awards were held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, where the South Wales-based Community Impact Initiative (Cii) won the Social Enterprise of the Year award. The Community Impact Initiative
Trystan Jones, Chief Executive of the Community Impact Initiative, said:
'For the individuals we work with, seeing us win the Social Enterprise of the Year award gave them confidence that we know what we're doing, that we're an organisation worth talking to.
'Externally, it was the cherry on the cake.
'Internally, winning rubber-stamped our belief in what we're doing. It provided proof of the positive influence we have. It was a powerful affirmation.
'Winning a Social Business Wales award has been very meaningful for all of us.'
Rhondda Cynon Taff-based social enterprise Down to Zero won the 2024 One to Watch award.
Project Manager Tom Addiscott said:
'We were very proud of the One to Watch award. It has given us kudos as a company, raised our volunteer numbers, and given our staff that 'feel good factor'. That kind of recognition for volunteers is very important, and was wonderful to see.'
Glenn Bowen, Director of Enterprise at Cwmpas, said:
'The Social Business Wales awards are about shining a light on the incredible work happening across Wales's social enterprise sector.
'We've seen how an SBW award win can raise an organisation's profile and open doors to new opportunities – and this year's simplified online entry system makes it easier than ever to take part.'
Entries are open until Monday 14 July, with winners to be announced at a celebration event in October.

Harlech Foodservice continues sponsorship of tourism awards
Harlech Foodservice, headquartered in Criccieth, has pledged a new three-year sponsorship deal for the Go North Wales Tourism Awards, extending its support until 2027. The wholesaler said the partnership is a way of "showing solidarity" with the tourism and hospitality sector, which has faced significant challenges during and since the pandemic. David Cattrall, managing director of Harlech Foodservice, said: "We are delighted to announce our continued support for the North Wales Tourism Awards. "It has become such an important event in the calendar for a sector that is vital to the North Wales economy and which attracts so many people to this beautiful area of the UK. "North Wales is a world-class tourism destination which is innovative and varied and we're proud to support those businesses by committing ourselves to backing these awards for the next three years. "The tourism and hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic and this is our opportunity to give something back and celebrate the achievements of our core customers." The awards will be held at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on November 20. (Image: Mandy Jones) Harlech Foodservice has served as the headline sponsor since 2021. This year, the company was named UK Food Wholesaler of the Year by The Caterer magazine and was also listed among the UK's best places to work by The Sunday Times. Founded more than 50 years ago, Harlech Foodservice initially focused on supplying hotels, pubs, holiday parks, and campsites across North West Wales. The company has since expanded to serve local authorities, schools, and hospitals, but hospitality remains a core customer base. Mr Cattrall emphasised the importance of supporting the industry through consistent, transparent pricing and digital upgrades. He said: "For the same reason we have implemented fixed, transparent pricing, and upgraded our website and app to enable customers to compare range, price and product information and make instant decisions." The company's "Trust Our Prices" campaign targets smaller, independent customers with weekly price reviews against major UK wholesalers. Harlech Foodservice claims that customers can save up to 14 per cent through its Harlech 50 price comparison scheme, which benchmarks top-selling products against industry competitor Booker. Customers can also earn up to 10 per cent back annually through its My Harlech loyalty app. Jim Jones, director of Go North Wales, welcomed the renewed partnership. Mr Jones said: "We're delighted that Harlech are committing to continue to support the tourism awards for the next three years. "We have had a long and fruitful partnership with them and they have played such a key part in the region's tourism for so many years."

Coca-Cola to release new Trump-approved version of the soda
Steve Charnock Published July 23, 2025 2:15pm Link is copied Comments Soda giant Coca-Cola is rolling out an all-new cane sugar-sweetened version of its world-famous signature drink, confirming a move that President Donald Trump teased last week. The beverage behemoth shared the update in its latest quarterly earnings report on Tuesday, saying that the drink will launch this fall and sit alongside - not replace - its current corn syrup–based line-up in the US. Trump claimed credit for the move on social media, saying it's a win for American consumers and their taste buds (Picture: AFP via Getty Images) 'This will be a very good move by them - You'll see. It's just better!' Trump had posted on Truth Social last week. He also wrote: 'I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so.' Coca-Cola later responded that it 'appreciates President Trump's enthusiasm,' but made clear that the original recipe isn't changing. Instead, this is a new product aimed at meeting growing consumer interest in alternative sweeteners (Picture: SOPA/Getty Images) According to the company's Tuesday announcement, the cane sugar version is part of Coca-Cola's 'ongoing innovation agenda' and will be an additional option within its US portfolio. 'This addition is designed to complement the company's strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences,' a spokesperson said. Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey told analysts, 'We are definitely looking to use the whole toolkit of available sweetening options where there are consumer preferences' (Picture: Getty Images) Trump had reportedly raised the issue of corn syrup with Coke's top brass back in January. According to the book 2024: How Trump Retook the White House, the president even brought billionaire sugar magnate and political donor José Fanjul into the conversation, phoning him during the meeting to press the case for using cane sugar. The result, Trump later claimed online, was Coca-Cola's decision to develop a new formula sweetened with traditional sugar (Picture: NBCUniversal via Getty Images) In many countries, including Mexico, Coke is already made with cane sugar. And it's become something of a cult item in America under the nickname 'Mexican Coke'. Sold in glass bottles, the imported version has built a loyal following since it was introduced to US stores back in 2005. Now, the company hopes that a domestic cane sugar product will reach more shoppers who want that Mexican taste without the higher import price tag (Picture: Margo Martin) Still, not everyone is convinced this is a meaningful health move. While Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has publicly attacked high-fructose corn syrup as a major driver of obesity, nutrition experts remain sceptical. Kennedy once called the sweetener a 'formula for making you obese and diabetic' in an appearance on Jordan Peterson's podcast. But others caution that switching sweeteners doesn't necessarily make soda healthy… (Picture: Tucker Carlson/YouTube) 'Excess consumption of sugar from any source harms health,' Eva Greenthal, senior policy scientist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, previously told CNN. 'To make the US food supply healthier, the Trump administration should focus on less sugar, not different sugar.' Many dietitians also argue that cane sugar and corn syrup affect the body in much the same way, especially in the high quantities found in sugary soft drinks (Picture: REUTERS) Coca-Cola's move doesn't necessarily mark a return to pre-corn syrup days so much as merely a product expansion for them. The company shifted to high-fructose corn syrup in the 1980s because it was cheaper and more readily available thanks to US corn subsidies. Quincey noted that cane sugar already appears in some American Coca-Cola products like lemonade, vitamin water and coffee drinks, so this new cola isn't entirely uncharted territory for the brand (Picture: Getty Images) Meanwhile, PepsiCo has no plans to change its flagship formula, but is experimenting with sweetener variety in newer offerings. Its prebiotic soda and its recently acquired Poppi brand both contain cane sugar. CEO Ramon Laguarta recently told CNBC that sugar's high price in the United States poses a rather hefty challenge for the industry. 'There is a conversation with the government probably on how do we make sugar more affordable in the US,' he said (Picture: Getty Images)
