Man arrested over murder of two Scots outside Spanish bar
A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of two Scots in Spain.
Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan died after a gunman opened fire outside Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol earlier this month.
On Friday, officers from Merseyside Police arrested a 44-year-old man on behalf of Spanish authorities on two counts of murder.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday for extradition proceedings and will remain in custody.
A spokesperson for the National Crime Agency said: 'On Friday June 13, officers from Merseyside Police arrested a 44-year-old man in the Liverpool area on behalf of the Spanish authorities for two counts of murder.
'The operation was supported by officers from the NCA's National Extradition Unit.
'The individual appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday June 14 for the commencement of extradition proceedings. He was remanded in custody.'
The attack took place at around 11pm when a car pulled up outside the bar and a masked man got out before opening fire as the two men stood outside.
The gunman fled in the car and both men died at the scene.
At the time, Police Scotland said the attack did not appear to be linked with a series of criminal acts by rival groups in Scotland, and that any speculation was 'not helpful' to the investigation.
The statement read: 'The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police.
'Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however, at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain.
'There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge.
'Any misinformation or speculation linking the events in Spain are not helpful to the ongoing investigations in either country.
'There is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland.'
Operation Portaledge is investigating a suspected gang feud linked with a number of shootings, firebombings and assaults in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas since March.
More than 40 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents.

A man who legally changed his name to Lucifer Of-Darkness had his case on an assault charge called in court on Friday the 13th. Of-Darkness is alleged to have repeatedly punched man in the head at Waverley train station in Edinburgh. The 41-year-old, formerly known as Berkani Nahim, is alleged to have caused severe injury to Christopher Jamieson on May 29 this year. There were raised eyebrows and wry smiles when Julie Torley, the defence agent, informed Sheriff Derek O'Carroll during a hearing at the capital's sheriff court that her client had officially changed his name. Torley said: 'This gentleman is in custody. Firstly my lord, he has legally changed his name to Lucifer Of-Darkness, by deed poll. 'That's his official name. First name is Lucifer, and second name is Of-Darkness.' Sheriff O'Carroll smiled and asked: 'Is the Of capitalised?' Torley replied: 'Yes, and there is a hyphen between the Of and Darkness.' Sheriff O'Carroll added: 'So is his surname Darkness, or Of-Darkness' The defence agent said: 'Of-Darkness.' The sheriff asked fiscal depute Corrie Laouadie to officially amend the complaint to feature the accused's new name. The case was continued to trial later this month and Lucifer Of-Darkness, who was not brought to court, was remanded in custody.

Man arrested in UK over Costa del Sol murder of Scots gangsters
Spanish police have confirmed a man has been arrested in the UK on suspicion of the execution of two Scottish gangland figures on the Costa del Sol. Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jr, 46, were shot dead at Monaghans pub in Fuengirola on May 31. Both were connected to the Lyons family, a prominent organised crime group based in the west of Scotland. The two men had been watching the Champions League football final with friends when they were targeted at the bar on the Andalusian town's beachfront. The BBC reported that a man was taken into custody in Liverpool by Merseyside police under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities. Spanish police have yet to make a formal statement. However, a Spanish police source said when asked about the arrest: 'The specialist UDYCO Costa del Sol police group [Organised Crime and Drugs Unit], which is leading the investigation, has identified this man. 'As they couldn't find him in the places where they thought he could have been in Malaga, they asked a court in Fuengirola, which has opened a judicial investigation into the shootings, to issue an international arrest warrant for this man. 'Police in the UK have arrested the man in Liverpool.' No details have yet been released about the suspect's age or nationality. He is facing extradition to Spain where he will be questioned about the May 31 murders, when Lyons Jr was hit by a single bullet outside the bar in front of friends and customers and Monaghan was pursued inside the pub and fatally shot. The gunman fled initially on foot but was driven from the scene by an accomplice in a car waiting near by, which headed east along the N340 dual carriageway towards the resort of Benalmadena. Any extradition request would need to be approved by a UK court. The suspect's return to Spain could be delayed if he decides to oppose extradition. After the killings Police Scotland issued a statement saying there was no intelligence to suggest the deaths were linked to a gangland feud in Scotland's central belt. Officers from the elite UDYCO headed the investigation, although they reported to a Fuengirola-based investigating judge co-ordinating the operation. Monaghan, a career criminal who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017, was tried but acquitted in 2012 for the murder of the notorious gangster Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll in a supermarket car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Eddie Lyons Jr were cleared of being involved in a street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. The most recent Spanish murders followed the fatal shooting nearly seven weeks ago of a 32-year-old British man in nearby Calahonda, a 15-minute drive from Monaghans towards Marbella. He was shot dead at about 8pm on April 21 in a professional hit as he returned to his car after finishing a football match with friends. The perpetrators fled in a getaway car that was later set alight. Police are investigating the assassination as a drug-related gang shooting but have yet to make any arrests. The victim has not been named but was known to come from Liverpool. Reports at the time described the incident as the fourth shooting so far that month on the Costa del Sol, where rival gangs have increasingly used extreme violence to settle scores and a number of international mafia gangs are known to have a base. Four days before the Calahonda shooting a 34-year-old man was rushed to a hospital in Marbella after being shot outside a nightclub in the resort.

Person goes overboard on UK ferry with major search operation underway
A person has fallen overboard from a ferry in the Firth of Clyde. A search is now under way following the incident between Dunoon and Gourock on Sunday afternoon. An HM Coastguard helicopter was dispatched alongside an RNLI lifeboat. CalMac said its MV Ali Cat vessel is also assisting the search. It's understood the person fell from a Western Ferries vessel. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: 'HM Coastguard are responding to reports of a person overboard between the Hunter's Quay and Gourock area in Scotland. 'An HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter has been tasked to conduct a search, alongside coastguard rescue teams from Largs and Dunoon, in addition to RNLI lifeboats from Helensburgh and Largs. 'Nearby vessels have been called to assist. Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service are also in attendance. 'The situation is ongoing.'
