Lauren Macuga takes third, Lindsey Vonn DNFs in super-G at world championships
Austrian Stephanie Venier won the super-G on Thursday at the alpine skiing world championships, earning a gold medal on home soil, while 22-year-old American Lauren Macuga earned a podium spot, tying for third.
Venier, 31, finished in 1:20.47 to edge Italian favorite Federica Brignone by 0.10 seconds in the biggest super-G event before the 2026 Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Macuga and Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie finished 0.24 seconds back to share bronze.

American star Lindsey Vonn, who returned to the sport this year at age 40 and was competing in her first world championships in six years, did not finish after colliding with a gate early in her run.
Vonn, who was sick with flu-like symptoms, caught her arm on the seventh gate down the slope in Saalbach, Austria. The gate pulled her arm back awkwardly and dislodged from the snow, slowing Vonn to a stop and sending her out of the race, holding her arm.
'I just went a little bit too early into the turn, and I caught my shoulder, my arm on the gate,' Vonn told NBC Sports' Heather Cox after the race. 'I don't think I've ever done that in my career, so I was a little bit confused. I'm fine. My arm was numb when it happened, and I'm getting feeling back.'
An 82-time winner on the World Cup circuit, Vonn has two top-six finishes on the tour this winter and was hoping to add world championship success to her comeback to the sport. She's also scheduled to compete in Saturday's downhill.
'I'll be fine for the downhill,' Vonn said.
It's the first world title for Venier, who was born in nearby Innsbruck and is a three-time winner on the World Cup tour, two in downhill and one in super-G. She was the silver medalist in downhill at the 2017 world championships.
Macuga has had a breakout year for the U.S. team, earning her first World Cup victory last month and now adding world championship hardware. She's the first American woman other than Vonn or Mikaela Shiffrin to win a world championship medal since 2013.

Paris Saint-Germain thumps Atlético Madrid 4-0 in an impressive Club World Cup opener
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened Club World Cup play with a 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday. PSG largely dominated Atlético at the Rose Bowl in its first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atlético in the second half of the European powers' meeting in front of 80,619 fans at the site of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup. Atlético's Clément Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute with his second yellow card on a frustrating day that left Diego Simeone visibly furious at both the referees and his players' mistakes. Ousmane Dembélé wasn't in uniform for PSG after reportedly injuring a quadriceps while playing for France on June 6. Gonçalo Ramos replaced Dembélé in Luis Enrique's only change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final. Enrique wore shorts and a training shirt on the sideline while coaching PSG in 88-degree midday California heat ((31 Celsius). PSG controlled possession early, and Ruiz capitalized atop the penalty area in the 19th minute. The Spanish midfielder long coveted by Atlético beat Jan Oblak with a clever strike into the far corner. Vitinha followed with a goal in injury time off Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's second assist of the first half. Julián Alvarez appeared to answer for Atlético in the second half, but the goal was waved off after VAR determined Koke had fouled Désiré Doué in the buildup. Alexander Sørloth horrifically missed an open net in the 82nd minute for Atlético. Mayulu iced PSG's victory five minutes later, and Lee converted a penalty on the final kick of the match. Key moment Atlético got a golden chance to tie it in first-half injury time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma swallowed up Thomas Griezmann's hard shot in the box. Moments later, Vitinha slipped through the Atlético defense and scored on the break. Takeaways PSG looked remarkably sharp late in its taxing season, showing no sign of treating this tournament as an anticlimax. The champs are in good shape to advance from group play after winning their toughest group match on paper. ___

Why Christian Pulisic and other USMNT stars aren't playing in Gold Cup
Why Christian Pulisic and other USMNT stars aren't playing in Gold Cup The U.S. men's national team enters the CONCACAF Gold Cup coming off a four-game losing streak under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. And if the USMNT is going to right the ship this tournament, it's going to do so without its best players. In recent years, the Gold Cup has been relegated to a developmental tournament with U.S. Soccer opting to instead send its best team to the CONCACAF Nations League or last year's Copa America. But this summer's Gold Cup could have been different with it being the final competitive tournament for the USMNT before next year's World Cup. Yet, when the rosters were announced, star players like Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Weston McKennie were not included ... for different reasons. Pulisic's absence was especially controversial among the USMNT fan base as the 26-year-old was coming off his best season at AC Milan. Pulisic, though, asked to not be a part of the Gold Cup roster in order to give himself an offseason to recover. Pulisic told CBS Sports that he was willing to play in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, but Pochettino declined that request. The USMNT coach wanted to use the same roster for both the friendlies and Gold Cup, so Pulisic opted to stay home. Musah and Robinson had similar reasons to Pulisic. They wanted to use the summer as an opportunity to recover ahead of the club season and World Cup. When it comes to McKennie, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah, they were not available as their club teams are competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. USMNT starters Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest were included on the initial camp roster but withdrew ahead of the friendlies. Both players were coming off lengthy injuries and were still working back to full strength.

Phillies' Ranger Suárez Cites Good Health for Recent Success
Phillies' Ranger Suárez Cites Good Health for Recent Success originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The best performing pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies rotation probably isn't who you'd expect. While Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez have both been their normal selves, the soon-to-be free agent of the group is rapidly driving up his price. Advertisement Ranger Suárez has been nothing short of dominant over the past month. Take away his first start off the injured list, where he allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings, and he has a 1.16 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across seven outings. His latest success came in the form of seven shutout innings against the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday night, where Ranger struck out six while allowing only four hits. After the game, he gave a simple answer as to what has led to this inspiring stretch. "Primarily, it's being healthy," Suárez told NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman. "I know what I'm capable of when I'm healthy, and I'm capable of doing great things." Much like last season, Ranger Suárez is throwing like an All-Star in the first half. But will that performance continue the rest of the way?Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Staying healthy has been a major challenge for Suárez. He's been on the injured list five times over the course of four seasons - three of which were because of various back issues. But when when he is at full strength, Ranger can be a very dependable arm. Advertisement Look at 2024, where he pitched to a 2.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP before the All-Star Break. After that, the back issues popped back up, and he was a shell of himself in August and September. Now perhaps more than ever, it's imperative that Suárez can continue to pitch every fifth game. Aaron Nola confirmed he has a stress fracture and will likely be out until late July. Taijuan Walker is being converted into a one-inning reliever. Andrew Painter has been roughed up a bit in Triple-A and wouldn't be coming up until after the All-Star Break anyway. With Philly's starting pitcher depth suddenly running short, they'll hope that Suárez and the rest of the rotation continue to stay locked in and healthy.
