Is it possible to upload the consciousness of your mind into a computer? – Amreen, age 15, New Delhi, India
The concept, cool yet maybe a little creepy, is known as mind uploading. Think of it as a way to create a copy of your brain, a transmission of your mind and consciousness into a computer. There you would live digitally, perhaps forever. You'd have an awareness of yourself, you'd retain your memories and still feel like you. But you wouldn't have a body.
Within that simulated environment, you could do anything you do in real life – eating, driving a car, playing sports. You could also do things impossible in the real world, like walking through walls, flying like a bird or traveling to other planets. The only limit is what science can realistically simulate.
Doable? Theoretically, mind uploading should be possible. Still, you may wonder how it could happen. After all, researchers have barely begun to understand the brain.
Yet science has a track record of turning theoretical possibilities into reality. Just because a concept seems terribly, unimaginably difficult doesn't mean it's impossible. Consider that science took humankind to the Moon, sequenced the human genome and eradicated smallpox. Those things too were once considered unlikely.
As a brain scientist who studies perception, I fully expect mind uploading to one day be a reality. But as of today, we're nowhere close.
The brain is often regarded as the most complex object in the known universe. Replicating all that complexity will be extraordinarily difficult.
One requirement: The uploaded brain needs the same inputs it always had. In other words, the external world must be available to it. Even cloistered inside a computer, you would still need a simulation of your senses, a reproduction of the ability to see, hear, smell, touch, feel – as well as move, blink, detect your heart rate, set your circadian rhythm and do thousands of other things.
But why is that? Couldn't you just exist in a pure mental bubble, inside the computer without sensory input?
Depriving people of their senses, like putting them in total darkness, or in a room without sound, is known as sensory deprivation, and it's regarded as a form of torture. People who have trouble sensing their bodily signals – thirst, hunger, pain, an itch – often have mental health challenges.
That's why for mind uploading to work, the simulation of your senses and the digital environment you're in must be exceptionally accurate. Even minor distortions could have serious mental consequences.
For now, researchers don't have the computing power, much less the scientific knowledge, to perform such simulations.
The first task for a successful mind upload: Scanning, then mapping the complete 3D structure of the human brain. This requires the equivalent of an extraordinarily sophisticated MRI machine that could detail the brain in an advanced way. At the moment, scientists are only at the very early stages of brain mapping – which includes the entire brain of a fly and tiny portions of a mouse brain.
In a few decades, a complete map of the human brain may be possible. Yet even capturing the identities of all 86 billion neurons, all smaller than a pinhead, plus their trillions of connections, still isn't enough. Uploading this information by itself into a computer won't accomplish much. That's because each neuron constantly adjusts its functioning, and that has to be modeled, too.
It's hard to know how many levels down researchers must go to make the simulated brain work. Is it enough to stop at the molecular level? Right now, no one knows.
Knowing how the brain computes things might provide a shortcut. That would let researchers simulate only the essential parts of the brain, and not all biological idiosyncrasies. It's easier to manufacture a new car knowing how a car works, compared to attempting to scan and replicate an existing car without any knowledge of its inner workings.
However, this approach requires that scientists figure out how the brain creates thoughts – how collections of thousands to millions of neurons come together to perform the computations that make the human mind come alive. It's hard to express how very far we are from this.
Here's another way: Replace the 86 billion real neurons with artificial ones, one at a time. That approach would make mind uploading much easier. Right now, though, scientists can't replace even a single real neuron with an artificial one.
But keep in mind the pace of technology is accelerating exponentially. It's reasonable to expect spectacular improvements in computing power and artificial intelligence in the coming decades.
One other thing is certain: Mind uploading will certainly have no problem finding funding. Many billionaires appear glad to part with lots of their money for a shot at living forever.
Although the challenges are enormous and the path forward uncertain, I believe that one day, mind uploading will be a reality. The most optimistic forecasts pinpoint the year 2045, only 20 years from now. Others say the end of this century.
But in my mind, both of these predictions are probably too optimistic. I would be shocked if mind uploading works in the next 100 years. But it might happen in 200 – which means the first person to live forever could be born in your lifetime.

Europe prepares to land rover on the Moon for first time

The first European Moon rover is due to land on the lunar surface on Thursday. Named Tenacious, the rover is less than 2ft long and can carry a payload of just over one pound. Built by the European arm of Japanese lunar exploration company Ispace, it will be controlled by ground staff in Luxembourg, who will be able to drive it at up to four inches per second in near real time, using a video camera mounted on its front panel. Once on the Moon, it will deliver an art project called Moonhouse, a 3in-high model of a typical red Swedish cottage, developed by Mikael Genberg, a Swedish artist. The team hopes to place the house in a location where it can be photographed with the Earth in the background. The rover is also carrying a shovel to collect lunar regolith – moon dust – which will be sold to Nasa for $5,000 (£3,685) under an agreement that will make history as the first off-planet sale of resources. It is the second attempt to land on the Moon by Ispace, after the company's first craft crash-landed on the lunar surface in 2020. An investigation later found that a software glitch had led the spacecraft to believe it was on the surface when it was still several miles from landing. Takeshi Hakamada, the founder of Ispace, said: 'Just over two years ago, Ispace became the first private company in the world to attempt a lunar landing. 'While the mission achieved significant results, we lost communication with the lander just before touchdown. 'Since that time, we have drawn on the experience, using it as motivation to move forward with resolve. We are now at the dawn of our next attempt to make history.' The rover is being carried in a lander spacecraft called Resilience which launched in January on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and entered lunar orbit on May 6. It is due to land on the Mare Frigoris region of the northern hemisphere of the near side of the Moon at 19:17 BST. The team is hoping that the area will be flat enough to allow the rover to trundle around, although its sturdy wheels should help it navigate unexpectedly rough terrain. Sophia Casanova, a senior lunar scientist at Ispace, said: 'The mission will be going to a really exciting region on the Moon. We are hoping to encounter a range of really interesting geologic features, and in particular with our Tenacious rover we will be exploring the lunar regolith, which is the soil-like material that covers the lunar surface. 'Understanding the characteristics of this material will help us not only understand the geology of the Moon but also help us understand the design of our future rovers.' She added: 'The Tenacious rover may encounter an array of features that may pose a hazard. Things like steep slopes, highly fluffy or compacted material, or small craters and boulders. However, these features represent really important characteristics for us to evaluate and our rover was designed with these operational conditions in mind.' The lander is also carrying several payloads including a water electrolyser for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as well as experiments looking at food production and space radiation. Kathryn Hadler, the director of the European Space Resources Innovation Centre, said: 'There are many resources of interest on the Moon, we can use the oxygen and metals present on the dust that coats the surface of the Moon, and we are also interested in the water ice that is present in the permanently shadowed reasons. 'This is important because we can use these resources to support human life, we can use it for rocket propellant, and this will allow us to support a future of sustainable space exploration. 'We need to develop the technologies to allow us to use these resources in space. It will allow us to understand how the regolith behaves when it is scooped and handled. And this is critical to develop technology for future space missions.' Ispace has previously said that its goal is to kick off the lunar economy, and it has several more missions planned, including working on two more landers. ‘One-of-a-kind exhibition' in Columbus chronicles astronaut's space missions

A new exhibition in Columbus offers a glimpse into space through the eyes of an astronaut who went there and did that not once but three times. Photographs from retired NASA astronaut Dave Scott's three space missions are on display at the Columbus State University Bo Bartlett Center through Aug. 2. The exhibition, titled 'Images from Space that Fire the Imagination' features images from Scott's missions aboard Gemini VIII, Apollo 9, and Apollo 15. 'Americans have always been explorers. They've always been cutting edge. They've always thought out of the box,' Tina Cross, coordinator of external funding at Columbus State University's Coca-Cola Space Science Center told the Ledger-Enquirer, 'and these astronauts led the way to finding things that are just Earth-shaking or Moon-shaking, as the case may be.' Included in the exhibition are photographs taken by Scott, including one he took of Apollo 15 Lunar Module Pilot Jim Irwin working on the Moon near the Lunar Rover. The show is a collaboration between the Bo Bartlett Center and the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, featuring items from Scott's personal collection that have been donated to the CCSSC via Scott's brother, Tom Scott, who worked with the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. 'He was familiar with the Space Science Center from its initial stages,' Cross said, 'and so, about eight or nine years ago, he started bringing things from Dave to us. And the first pictures he brought are here.' The Bo Bartlett Center is at 921 Front Ave. in downtown Columbus. It is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Strange Darkness Is Spreading Throughout the Oceans

Facing rising temperatures, a spike in acidity driven by an influx of carbon, mass habitat destruction, and inescapable pollution, the world's oceans haven't had it easy. But in an ominously literal sense, the situation may be even darker than we realized. New research indicates that more than a fifth of the global ocean has darkened over the past two decades, with the depths that sunlight can penetrate significantly retreating. The findings, published in a new study in the journal Global Change Biology, describe a worrying shrinking in the ocean's crucial photic zones — the uppermost layer where 90 percent of all marine life, from fish to photosynthesizing plankton, reside. This "reduces the amount of ocean available for animals that rely on the Sun and the Moon for their survival and reproduction," said study author Thomas Davies, associate professor of marine conservation at the University of Plymouth, in a statement about the work. Davies and his colleague Tim Smyth, a marine biogeochemist from the University of Exeter, used two decades of NASA satellite data to model how the depth of the photic zone has shrunk between 2003 and 2022. In all, they found that 21 percent of the deep blue had fallen into gloom, with some regions more hard hit than others. For ten percent of the world's oceans — an area equal to the continent of Africa — the depth of the photic zone decreased by over 164 feet (50 meters). In 2.6 percent of the ocean, the dusking was even more extreme, with the photic zone depth receding by more than 328 feet (100 meters). Conversely, it's worth noting, about ten percent of the ocean became lighter. Scientists have long warned about this phenomenon. But according to the researchers, the extent of it wasn't well known until now. "There has been research showing how the surface of the ocean has changed color over the last twenty years, potentially as a result of changes in plankton communities," Davies said in the statement. So far, a clear culprit for the dimming hasn't emerged. The causes in this case appear more involute and disparate — but humans, from what we can tell, do share a significant part of the blame. Sediments and other materials dumped into the water near coasts can contribute to blocking sunlight, the authors note. But this doesn't explain why we're seeing darkening in the open ocean, most prominently in regions around the Arctic and Antarctic, where climate change is dramatically reshaping the environment. The authors conclude that a "combination of nutrient, organic material and sediment loading near the coasts and changes in global ocean circulation are probable causes" of the ocean darkening, they wrote in the paper. We're only just beginning to grapple with this tenebrous trend, but the impact it could have could be catastrophic. We rely on the photic zones for the "air we breathe, the fish we eat, our ability to fight climate change, and for the general health and well-being of the planet," Davies added.
