"I have disagreements with Congress leadership": Shashi Tharoor says party did not invite him for Nilambur byelection campaign
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 19 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that he had a difference of opinion with his party's leadership but added that the Congress party, its values, and its workers are dear to him.
'As you know, I have disagreements with the current Congress leadership. Some of them are in the public domain, so you know them. It is better to sort it out within the party by talking to them directly,' Tharoor said, adding that he did not campaign for the Congress candidate for the Nilambur byelection because he did not get the invitation from the party for the same.
'Congress party, its values, and its workers are dear to me. I have been working with them for the past 16 years, and I have seen their commitment, dedication and idealism,' he added.
Asked whether his difference of opinion is with the Congress' high command or with the state leadership of the party, he evaded the question, saying that he did not want to talk about it now as the voting in the Assembly byelection is ongoing.
'... Today is not the time to talk about those issues (His disagreements with the leadership) as the polling is ongoing, where I wish to see my friend (Congress candidate) Aryadan Shoukath) win it. Some of my disagreements with party leadership are reported in the media, so it cannot be hidden,' he said.
'Our Congress workers worked hard and honestly there in Nilanmbur. We have an excellent candidate. I wish to see the result of their work,' he added.
The bypoll has been necessitated after the resignation of Left Democratic Front independent legislator PV Anvar, who later joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) after his acrimonious break-up with the ruling alliance.
Aryadan Shoukhath expressed confidence in a UDF victory for the constituency, saying that the state government has 'totally neglected Nilambur area,' with tribals not being rehabilitated and increasing human-animal conflict.
'There will be a good victory in this election. For the last nine years, the state government has neglected the Nilambur area. Many tribals have not been rehabilitated. There is also human-animal conflict here,' Shoukath told ANI.

UP: Submit proposals for road infra by June 30, CM Adityanath tells district officials
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday directed officials of all districts to submit proposals for road infrastructure development under the Public Works Department's schemes by June 30. He also instructed district magistrates to work in close coordination with local public representatives to ensure that the proposals reflect the specific needs of each region, an official statement said. "Proposals under the Public Works Department's 18 flagship schemes should be submitted by June 30," the chief minister said. Highlighting the importance of linking religious tourism with economic empowerment, the chief minister directed the officials to annually select the top 50 religious sites across the state, and prioritise road construction and infrastructure strengthening to improve access. He noted that enhanced connectivity to these sites would not only enrich the cultural experience of visitors but also stimulate the local economy, the statement said. Adityanath underscored the need to adopt an integrated approach to road connectivity across the state. He emphasised on road quality and maintenance, directing that no road in the state should have potholes. To ensure timely execution and high quality of development works, the chief minister instructed all DMs to appoint a nodal officer in each district responsible for conducting weekly reviews of project progress. He also mandated the compulsory presence of public representatives in monthly and bi-monthly review meetings to strengthen transparency and accountability. The chief minister issued strict directives to identify tainted or suspicious contractors, thoroughly investigate them, and take appropriate action where necessary, the statement said.

Dispute over continuance of relief camp for sea erosion-hit families at Cheriyakadavu
A heated exchange erupted between the sea erosion-hit families in Chellanam panchayat and Revenue officials over the continuation of a relief camp at the parish hall of the Cheriyakadavu church on Thursday evening. Since the parish hall has been booked for a function on Sunday, the church officials, in consultation with Revenue officials, informed the camp residents that the camp would be wound up after lunch on Friday, and that the residents may move to a school at Kalathara near Palluruthy. But the Chellanam-Kochi Janakeeya Vedhi protested this decision, citing the distance, and how it would affect the schooling of children of families in the relief camp. Revenue officials claimed that only four of the eight families with fully damaged houses were at the camp as they could not afford to find rented accommodations. They claimed that the other four families had moved out on rent to places much farther away than the school at Kalathara to debunk the complaint about distance. However, the Vedhi countered, claiming that there were even more families with their houses hardly habitable. Eventually, it was decided that the camp residents would be shifted to the Cheriyakadavu school in the immediate neighbourhood of the parish hall on Sunday and then moved back into the hall the next day. The hall has not been booked for any function for the next fortnight after this Sunday, giving the authorities enough time to find a solution. Meanwhile, priests from the Kochi and Alappuzha dioceses are set to stage a day-long hunger strike at the Thoppumpady BOT Junction on Friday, demanding a permanent solution to sea erosion in Chellanam panchayat. This comes close on the heels of three days of siege of the Fort Kochi-Alappuzha State highway for three consecutive days at Kannamaly before it was called off on Wednesday.

A Nigerian university has come under immense criticism after a video of a female staff member checking whether a female student was wearing a bra before allowing her into the examination hall went viral. Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State defended the policy of allowing no female student without a bra in the examination hall and said it is part of the institution's dress code aimed to promote modesty and maintain a "distraction-free environment". President of the students' union, Muizz Olatunji, however, has acknowledged that there is a need for an alternative method to enforce this dress code. Olatunji posted in X that checking the bra is not a new policy. Olatunji shared parts of what he said were the school's policies, which described indecent dressing as that which shows sensitive body parts 'such as breasts, buttocks, nipples and belly-buttons,' including 'any dressing that is capable of making the same or opposite sex to lust after the student in an indecent manner. ' After the video went viral, students of the university confirmed that it was shot at their school. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong described the OOU's bra policy as 'draconian' and 'arbitrary,' and one that 'might amount to some form of sexual harassment.' He told CNN that 'physically examining the bodies of students to determine whether they are wearing a bra or not is not only degrading but also undignifying.' 'There could be medical explanations for why certain students may not feel comfortable wearing a bra at a particular time,' he said, adding that enforcing the policy 'without exceptions, or without taking peculiarities into consideration is arbitrary,' and could lead to legal actions.
