Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University activist released from ICE detention, spoke at a rally held in his honor on June 22, 2025. Khalil declared that 'there isn't a shred of evidence that what I did or said is wrong,' and called the U.S. government a 'killing machine.' Responding to allegations that his speech undermines 'U.S. foreign policy on combating antisemitism,' he said that Israel is 'the top foreign policy threat to the U.S.' He called it 'ironic' that such accusations were coming from Senator Marco Rubio, who he claimed 'regularly meets with new Nazis.'
Khalil also accused Columbia University of failing to protect pro-Palestinian students, saying that they have been targeted by 'Israel-aligned groups' on campus who feel emboldened to continue to harass and harm them.
Khalil, draped in a Palestinian flag, led chants against Columbia University. He stood alongside Manolo De Los Santos, executive director and founder of the People's Forum, as well as other members of the organization. Manolo De Los Santos and the People's Forum have been reported to maintain financial ties with the Chinese Communist Party.

100+ lawmakers push for PMF Law vote

Shafaq News – Baghdad More than 100 Iraqi lawmakers have endorsed a request for an extraordinary parliamentary session to vote on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Authority Law, MP Ibtisam al-Hilali disclosed on Sunday. Al-Hilali, a lawmaker of the Iran-aligned Shiite Coordination Framework, told Shafaq News that the signatures will be submitted to parliament's leadership to set a date, stressing that the legislation is 'essential' and must advance despite external pressures to block it. The proposed law seeks to regulate the PMF, a powerful umbrella of armed groups integrated into Iraq's security apparatus after the 2014 war with ISIS. Supporters argue it secures fighters' rights, while critics caution it could formalize the influence of the groups beyond full state control. Parliament has remained frozen since August 5, when a clash between Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani and Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi over chairing authority stalled proceedings, leaving major bills — including the PMF Law — in limbo as political blocs shift focus to the November 11 elections. Independent MP Jawad al-Yasari confirmed

Israel kills 55+ Palestinians seeking aid

Shafaq News – Gaza Israeli forces escalated their offensive on the Gaza Strip on Saturday, carrying out airstrikes and heavy artillery bombardments that left dozens dead and many others wounded across multiple areas. Palestinian media, citing medical sources, reported that at least 60 people were killed while gathering for humanitarian aid in the Zikim area of northern Gaza and along the Netzarim corridor in central Gaza. The Ministry of Health added that Israeli troops also opened fire on civilians waiting for aid in the same zone, leaving six dead and 26 injured. #شاهد | مشاهد مؤثرة لطفل نازح في غزة يجر عربة ماء بصعوبة تحت أشعة الشمس الحارقة حافي القدمين وسط استمرار العدوان "الإسرائيلي" على القطاع — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) August 16, 2025 Rescue teams confirmed the deaths of six members of one family, including four children, when strikes hit a house in al-Bureij refugee camp. In southern Gaza, medical staff recorded casualties from a strike on civilians in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis. Witnesses recounted another strike on a tent sheltering displaced families near al-Majda Wasila School in Gaza City, which killed seven and injured others. Meanwhile, tanks pushed deeper into Gaza City's al-Zeitoun neighborhood under heavy shelling, while airstrikes leveled dozens of homes and apartment buildings in central Khan Younis, leaving widespread destruction. #شاهد | استشهاد طفلة لا تتجاوز من عمرها السنتين في غارة للاحتلال على حي الزيتون جنوب شرقي مدينة غزة — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) August 16, 2025 According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, at least 61,827 Palestinians have been killed and more than 155,275 injured since the war began on October 7, 2023. The escalation has raised growing fears of a humanitarian collapse, as hospitals run out of critical supplies and hundreds of thousands of displaced residents endure severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.

Jordan denounces Netanyahu's ‘Greater Israel' vision

Shafaq News – Amman Jordan condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday for recent remarks interpreted as a call for a 'Greater Israel,' warning they pose a direct threat to regional sovereignty and violate international law. During a cabinet meeting yesterday, Netanyahu reportedly outlined a vision for Gaza and the occupied West Bank in terms widely seen as endorsing permanent Israeli control over Palestinian territories. Though no direct quote was released, the remarks drew immediate backlash from Amman. 'This is delusional incitement,' said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah, calling Netanyahu's rhetoric a 'serious provocation' and a violation of the UN Charter. He stressed that such statements 'will not diminish Jordan or the Arab world, nor erase the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.' He described the Israeli premier's position as an escalation that reflects the 'beleaguered state' of the Israeli government amid growing global condemnation of its military actions. 'These reckless fantasies only inflame the conflict and endanger regional peace and stability,' the spokesperson noted, urging the international community to take a firm stand to address the situation.
